Left turn yields! They should have taken away the defunct satellite's license away years ago.

Make that 12,000+ space objects after that collision. It may be a coincidence, but Tuesday morning on my way to work I saw a really large, strange looking meteorite (or what I thought was a meteorite) that could have been a large piece of one of the satellites entering the atmosphere. I say strange because it looked really lopsided and it kind of tumbled several times before it burnt up.
Don't let Nadya Suleman see this. She'll try to implant it!
Man, talk about finding a parking space !! And just think, 1960 there were none in space at all.
Jeepers, and I thought the debris encircling earth in WALL-E was meant as satirical exageration.
Hello.... is there anybody out there. Just nod if you can hear me...
Angels on a pin. I read about the collision between an Iridium Satellite Network satellite and an old Russian satellite earlier today. The article stated that the US Monitors all space junk over 10cm. That's 3.9 inches folks.
hmmmmm---this company has some history--http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iridium_(satellite)
How did NASA (Never A Straight Answer) and NORAD, not have either satellite on their display? How could this happen with no agency knowing it was coming? Is there now danger to the ISS from the debris field? Who's going to answer for this?
Small wonder more of these satellites don't take each other out. Looks kinda trashy doesn't it....You would think with our technology that we could at least put them all into the same orbit, so our planet could be as beautiful as Saturn.
xvWyQc hi! http://msn.com my site
The Earth has fleas! Is amazing that the Space Shuttle can go out in that mess and not collide with something too. Getting as congested as our highways.
This is not realistic at all! Views of space from recent shuttle missions don't show these objects in this close aray. If this were correct we could not even launch the shuttle! It appears to be just one more exagerated photo to make gullible Americans "Ooh & Aah". It is very clear that our society will buy into anything!
Time to send some of them to the graveyard!
Ever get the feeling you're being watched? I guess this is one price of having GPS for on/off road adventures and cell phones on every driver's ear. I still want my jet car. Although, now, there isn't as much "space" to steer it.
That is horible Earth is such a great place and the have to ruin it with all that space junk. Pretty so we will all be no spaceship worlds getting fat cause we ruined this Beautiful place called Earth.
while it LOOKS super congested, it's important to keep in mind that each of those objects is 4 to 5 miles apart, and in calculated motion around or with our planet. The russian satalite was dead floating metal. It's orbit was no longer controled, while it's decay was calculated, there are countless X factors that caused it to drift into the wrong path. that is...if you believe the "official story"
Take paradise, and put up a parking lot...
Completely unrealistic.
"This is not realistic at all!" That's why it's called an artist's impression and not an actual, to-scale rendition of the space debris field in low-Earth orbit. And, actually, there are over 18,0000+ objects floating around the planet. The reason the Space Shuttle doesn't get hit is because this field is monitored and in-flight adjustments are made to avoid any collisions; but collisions have happened to both the Space Shuttle and to satellites. Do you really think that satellites are that large in relation to the size of the Earth? If so, you'd see everyone one of them from the ground.
There are a lot of gullible people on here.
I think we found the real reason for Global Warming. We have a blanket of garbage around us. I know we all use these and rely on them everday but Jees Louise! We're all worried about cleaning up the environment, looks like we need to go a little further!
These debris are actually in higher orbits (500 miles above earth) while the ISS and space shuttles are designed for low orbital flights (around 200 miles above earth), so the chance of these colliding into the ISS or the space shuttle is pretty slim.
Earth's total surface is an area that measuring 197,000,000 square miles and there are only 12000 objects around it so i would think the chances of two things colliding is actually pretty slim.
yeah thats not to scale...it's just a representation of all the debris that is in orbit...if that was, you would see it from space...and not the one in a blue moon "Oh look I see a sat" kinda fly by...it would be an every night ordeal...some of these objects are thousands of miles appart..and are only MAYBE 4' in leingth...to 2"...I mean we are talking SMALL here.
then how come we can't get decent phone reception in east texas for Pete's sake!
its not right to spend so much money in space bugs and not spend anything in protecting the earth we live in y we cant invest in getting the automotive companys to stop producing these monster wheels and giant hotels tostop poluting the planet and start feeding the hungery not the fat ass americans with their adhd overeater and over consumers
Keep in mind that if you were looking at the actual size of these satellites, you would see a whole lot of nothing. These are blown up to the size of small countries so that you can see them. The "picture" is just an artist's rendition to show how much stuff is in orbit. If it were an actual picture taken, you would instead see a beautiful backdrop of stars behind our tiny planet.
The circumference of the Earth is almost 25,000 miles. If all of these were lined up single file, there would be one every two miles. And these things are WAY too big in our "artists" depiction. He'll probably get a Nobel prize for it too!
thats unbelieveable, what a mess we've made of God's beautiful creation. looks like we're being invaded!!!
Roy, Treveo, Reality - Thank you for some old fashion common sense. Yes, we do have satellites buzzing around the Earth - but, if you look at pictures of Earth from Space - you do not see this congestion. However, if there are Alien races with their own version of SETI I'm, sure the electronic buzz these satellites make has them all hopping up and down that is if there are hoppers on other planets (smile)
oh please give me a break! This is soooooo not realistic.
I wish this picture was a bit more romantic than this for this comment, but it's better than the hailstone pic... To all the Ladies on this Blog...I offer up a Rose to each of you...May you all have a very romantic and wonderful St. Valentines Day.
Mickey - I was wondering the same thing about our TX phones. I zoomed in and I can see the little spaceman from the classic Saturday morning cartoons. Anyone know which one I am talking about? I forgot his name. He was short and he always wore this large helmet with a "mohawk"- looking-thingy on top? Actually, it looked like a gladiator helmet. Someone help me out, pleeeeeease!!!!!!!
And to all of you married folks... enjoy your one of four times a year to have sex. (the others being you and your spouses birthdays, and your anniversary.)
Sorry Karen, you'd be surprised to know that this is pretty close to realistic. I'm active duty military, and I work in the Space Community... Trust me, this is a good illustration.
This is comical. It's a great example of the disproportion that environmentalists apply to make it seem like we are having a meltdown. In order for this picture to be true each satellite would have to be roughly the size of Florida.
I'll bet one of them was on a cell phone!
oh gee... so much for going green
Ahhh, thanks AP! CF- are you talking about marvin the martian, by any chance?? I think the purpose of the rendition was to get people talking, so I'm failure certain that the artist succeeded.
I can't believe this. are you telling me that if we took 12,000 Prius' this is what it would look like? Ridiculous what we fall for.
AP - Thank you kindly! Jeff - two opposing views? which is it please, "pretty close to realistic" or "diproportionate environmentalists?" Or do you work for LisainNM's version of NASA?
Its is s0o unrealistic ! may be in 2100 or something i don't know .
When I was a teen we used to sit out in the country at night and watch the satelites. You have to have a very clear sky, with no "city light" around, and you have to look very closely. We would see hundreds moving around and would watch them until they got out of sight. I haven't done that in forever.
Sweet. A cosmic car crash! However, its not as bad as it seems. Most this debris will fall back to Earth and burn up upon reentry. When these two satellites collided, they lost a great deal of their orbital velocity. These satellites were in low earth orbit. To maintain orbit at that altitude, an object must be moving very fast. If the debris is moving slower than this required speed, it will eventually drop back into the atmosphere. Much of it likely has already done so.
The people of Earth should be compensated by these companies and governments before they are allowed ot junk up the skies. Call it a pollution credit.
All - just remember, while this is an interesting visualization, this is also an exaggeration - none of the objects is even remotely illustrated to scale with the earth in the photo. Also be mindful that the objects are probably not all on equal orbits around the planet (most are elliptical), and for the most part they occupy different 'altitudes' above the earth, even at apogee and perigee.
Yea to bad those satellites are grossly disproportional to the earth. Just look at one of the satellites with what i'm guessing are solar array "wings". If you take it from wing-tip to wing-tip it must span atleast several hundred miles. I don't think we got any satellites that big.
bye bye Iridium 33... may you live as atomized chunks and pieces circling our planet at thousands of meters per second... RIP. Is not about how big or small the pieces are, they are traveling faster that any expensive domestic or import vehicles, hyper velocities. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_debris A 3.9 inch object traveling at 5,600 mph will make more than a hole in your contour.
CF-His name is Marvin, Marvin the Martian, and he was always very, very, angry. I think Bob Clampett came up with him, as he did Bugs Bunny and Heckle and Jeckyl. Wherever you are now Bob, thanks.
AmPat - awwww, thank you so much. It's been a while since I've gotten a Valentine rose! And Happy Valentine's Day to all my blog buddies! CFrom - you're talking about Marvin the Martian and his green dog K-9. My favorites! Oh, and I hope you realized that the Micky (no e) with the cell phone comment wasn't me (MickeyMass)! Welcome newbies!
I also meant to say that I agree with BerryBeth that the picture does rather look like an unfertilized egg cell surrounded by nurse cells (or an egg cell surrounded by tailless sperm cells).
CF--marvin the martian AP---thanks & right back atcha' Mt---always got the day off for my BD
First we ruin our planet, now we are ruining the universe. Wake up people!
Fuzzyball.
THIS IS THE BIGGEST LOAD OF GARBAGE I'VE EVER SEEN... AND I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT THE DEBRIS AROUND THE EARTH BUT RATHER THE ART WORK ITSELF. Ridiculous! Even if there were 50,000 cape cod size houses floating in orbit. From that altitude, it still wouldn't look that crowded. This artist must be one of those anti-space travel people who is trying to scare the uninformed public. Even IF this were true, and its not; but, IF it were, then every child with a telecope would be able to see these debris in the night sky. Guess what! My child has a telescope, and we've never seen anything like whats in this ridiculous picture.
Ground control to major Tong, take your protein pills, and put your helmet on. We've really made the grade. Looks like a comet trail of celestial twilight.
Yay. Another drive-by telling us to 'wake up'. My favorite.
It´s scary. Hope some realistic data comes out soon. How can this garbage affect us in a near future?
Wow. Fascinating stuff. Lets all make a difference. It starts at home.
What an exciting photo!...Now let me get back to my Natinal Enquirer...World Exclusive News - Britiney's Stolen Diaries. VWampler...It's major Tom...Where is Neosho when we need her?
If the scale of this debris is correct, we have entered a period of global cooling.
Why did they called it the "SPACE RACE". Everyone who has space capability are using space to get the upper hand. We sometimes know when the shuttle goes up but, rarely hear when other country do and what they are sending.
First off, if anyone here believes that this is even slightly accurate, you need to go back to school, particularly science class. Second, to all of you commenting on why your cell phone signal is so bad: cell phones don't get their signal from satellites, they get them from towers on the ground.
Now that we have polluted Earth, we move on to polluting the universe. What is next?
This is interesting but at the same time confusing. It would appear to me that if in fact there is so much debris (call what you want) floating around in space, and around the earth that previous space shuttle flights would have indicated such a situation and yet they have reported nothing.
Anyone who's seen the Pixar film, Wally, can see where this trend is headed. We're as careless about space as we are with Earth.
It looks like Wall-E. Which is really sad.
Gazoo - The Martian's name was The Great Gazoo - from the Flinstones
see that one far right 80 degrees north east about 652 miles that ones mine i know it!!!
Is anyone suprised about a "defunct" Russian anything? Let's not forget the imfamous MIR space doorknob!!
WHAT A SHAME!!! God gave us a nice clean universe and man has destroyed it. What are we leaving out children and grandchildren?
I think the artist should paint this to scale, and take into account how much this is spread out around the Globe. I think it would be much much clearer.
Cool picture, but no way that's to scale, unless the objects are the size of New Jersey.
I thought about 10,000 of these peices were two to four inches in size. I wonder how much of the debris in this rendition is comparitive to its reletave size?
No wonder there are less UFO sightings!!! They cant find a parking space!!!!
WOAH!!! Is that real? Before too long, it will just fall from the sky. I don't want my future kids to be playing outside and all of a sudden, a peice of metle or whatever hits them on the head! Lets start making a diffrence.
hummm...first China shoots one down, then US shoots one down...Russia just rams.
Well maybe we should go and do a little space (A.K.A Spring) Cleaning
What all of you morons are missing is that this is an artist's rendering, not an actual photo!
collision in space,an accident?how about the russians took out one of our spy sats.dont belive everything the government says.....
I wouldn't say a small country. I would say a small state. But in anycase, weather they are blown up or not the satallites that are not being used should be taken down from orbit.
thats absolutely disgusting. call me whatever you want, but shoot we've polluted the earth and the earth's water with our JUNK. but now we are polluting the space with it. i mean the vast expanses of our solar system isn't even safe from man's trashy and destructive ways. i mean it is bad enough thinking that the earth is all ours and we can do what we want with it but now we are thinking the whole solar system is ours?? its this kind of thing that makes me KNOW if there is a god out there he is way more gracious then any man could ever be, cuz i would have wiped man kind off the face off the earth YEARS AND YEARS ago if he were doing this to my creation...... i honestly feel like to cry, will it ever stop? or are we going to think we are the boss until we ruin everything including ourselves? and whether it is true or not true, the true thing is that we do have all that stuff up there, maybe it doesnt look like that. but what just cuz we cant see it means its not a big deal?? thats the way to go about things eyy??
Wow, according to this picture some of those space objects look to be the size of a city... *roll eyes*
tax dollars @ work
Not to be one to say that it isn't significant that we are trashing space, but - let's put this absurd picture in perspective. The surface of earth has an area of 197,000,000 sq. miles. Divided by 12,000, that means that one piece of space junk has 16,400 SQ. miles (vertical from Earth) to itself. PLUS it is 3-dimensional space. Yes, it will increase the danger, but no, it isn't as bad as they make it look in this picture!
What a joke that picture is. The size of the satellites, and other debris, is made way larger to make people think there is trash everywhere. Look at all the fear already brought in the posts by all the "followers". Make a donation to "clean space now". wait a few days until i make a website and get all the stuff so you can send me money to clean outer space. Anyone who believes this bunk needs to seek immediate mental health treatment, before you harm yourself or someone else.
How Terrible! I don't even want to look at it!
Sure--there's a lot of man-made satellites and space junk, but it's not as bad as it looks in this depiction. There is a lot more room than what appears so don't be fooled by this image. The satellites would really be specks, probably not even visible in a photo of the earth at this relative size.
Hey this is the same thing they showed in the Wall-E movie, funny.
i really enjoy reading these comments..i'm also glad that most of you all found this very humorous..but failed to realize that we are the ones who created this mess! so keep up with the jokes but when its start to rain trash i'll see who has the last laugh..lol
Good thing this is just an artists rendition. In reality, 12000 objects in orbit would probably resemble a pinch of pepper in an aquarium.
The artist is expreasing what will happen if we dont take action.
This picture is a little misleading. It's not drawn to scale. The satellites would be the size of cities if this picture were to scale.
It looks like the Earth in the movie W-alle...
This can not be real....no way!
GREAT!!!! Poluting earth and now space!!! Come on people!
The question is: Why make this "artist's generated impression" in the first place? Anyone with a working brain cell would know the illustration is the garbage -- not the satellites. Its goal is to make us feel bad. Rather than salute the acomplishments of society, make it look like humans are to "Blame" for something. And based on the responses here, about 2/3rd of you are falling for it. And don't even get me going on global warming...
This is just an artists view. If the scale were true, you'd not even see the space station. Further, remember that all that stuff moves around in three dimensions and shown in two. With the exception of geosynchronus objects most of the satelites and the junk floats at various altitudes. To the person who mentions that we are making a mess of the universe . . . the near earth orbit isn't even the solar system, much less the universe. So, stop panicking!
This is where the chupacabra is hiding. Let's create a company, with all the pero clean this up. Any suggestions? If we tell the regular newscast people they would have a frenzy, our economy has most to worry about. Just create the company. I will run it without buying a spacecraft. CEO
Litter on Earth..... Litter in Space..... No Matter if it's on Earth, or in Space....Governments and Mankind Will Find a way to Screw it up... What was Once Fresh Air, and Open is Now Junk from Greed... Wake Up Earth Before it's too Late..
I wonder what we are supposed to do with this info. It's not like a bunch of us have been going up there just to dump trash.
Amazing, I had no idea satellites are the size of New York City! This image was probably an artist rendition of the same artist that made Gore's fictional Antartica melting. It is amazing and wonderful that we can fill our skies with these objects to enhance our lives.
The rest of us here on earth have to recycle how about NASA and RUSSIA?
Dirty humans gotta pollute everything... even space now...
I love the idea of orbeting the junk like saterns rings but how far out would it reach?
What amount of the Sun's energy are the 12,000+ objects blocking. Another piece of the Global warming puzzel. When will we humans learn?
Hello, there is a lot of material around the world, it is very beautiful
Wow. This picture does go a little over board, but it still makes you think, huh? I wonder if somebody from a space federation or corparation will do something about this!
With all the junk floating up there maybe that's what is goofing up the ozone layer
Wow, Pixar was right! Wall-e is really happening!
This artist’s rendition IS exaggerated. To put this in perspective one should consider that there are a little over 12000 buildings in New York, imagine the space they occupy compared to the rest of the country. Now imagine those buildings spread out over the entire earth, there’s quite a bit of space between them right? Now understand that a typical satellite is about the size of a mini-cooper, not a building, and that the surface area of the orbital sphere is much larger than the surface area of the earth. 12,000 satellites spread into that area is not very congested at all. Just a little perspective.
you have to remember that the spots on this image are many times bigger than a satellite really is...so it looks more crowded than it is in reality
I cannot believe people are giving this any kind of credit, or second look... These objects are no where near the size depicted... Its like painting a picture of me "Covered" by lice... ony the lice are each the size of a Pie. Give me a break!
This is how America reacts to the technology that makes your everyday lives livable. Without the things in orbit the life we all live now would be so very different than today. Even the tree huggers would suffer from lack of technology (and they know it, but won't admit it). This is the price we pay to live the lives we all demand nowadays, and everyone is shocked? Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the ME, ME, ME, mindset and generations we have created and WE did this to ourselves....
thats getting a little rediculous its nice to see that billions of dollars are getting spent to have garbage floating around our planet and they say that we are creating global warming
wow i never see that b4
This means that there's a fight for the telecomunication's control all over the world? I think that it's a nasty thing. I live in Spain and I don't know the day by day reality in the USA or in other parts of the world. I pray for there's no telecos war. If some people know about something like that, something wich is real, please tell it to the people, make a film, etc. It reflects that the human continues to fight against his hummanity.
Just to be ridiculous...if the pic is true....will all these orbiting satellites help lesson global warming by blocking the sun's rays?? hmmmmmm
It's in 1st dimensional view, so it all depends on how u look at the image; and remember that the world is round. 12,000 objects is quite a bit though, it's kinda scary.
is there any plans to remove old and inoperitive satellites from orbit?
A very deceiving picture. Yes, 12000 objects are spinning around up there, but there is plenty of room. The two satellites that hit each other, i bet it doesn't happen for another 50 years. Those satellites are not the size of large cities as the picture shows them.
I cannot help but wonder who the satellite owners are going to sue when one of their missiles wrecks? New field of law?
NOT TO WORRY...trash pick-up is on Tuesday 2012. Maybe those brains working on creating a black hole can get with HEFTY and make it dissappear.
Wow. I think I DID see this in one of my kids wheres waldo books. When I saw it I thought someone drew it.
what a shame, mam can't leave any paradise alone, when will we learn?probility never.
Its to bad the majority of people who will read this are to uneducated to see it for what it really is. 12,000 pieces of space junk could mean anything the size of a fingernail or more. I agree with Joel, what I do in my house makes a difference in space!!
KEON- Lighten Up, Gomer! It says computer-generated artist's impression. Take a Xanax and have one of your kids explain that to you.
Cool! Maybe one day we'll have a ring like Saturn!
I agree with anyone mentioning the global warming effect. Metal is a conductor of heat. With the sun beaming on all of this metal, it only makes sense that the space surrounding earth is much hotter now than any decade or generation before us. Now ... do the UV Rays that enter earth ever make it out or are they just bounced back by these satellites? I'm not going to say that there haven't been times in the earth's past where unbearable heat has occured, but I can't help but think that these satellites speed up the process.
Wow. This picture is ridiculous. The scale is VERY far from accurate. First off -- the satellites aren't nearly that close. They average at least 10,000 miles above Earth's surface. Do some calculations and you'll realize that they have ~2.45 BILLION square miles of real estate to work with up there. That's ~200,000 square miles per space object. Fools.
Obviously many of the objects shown on this drawing are as big as entire cities and counties. So of course this drawing is blown way out of proportion.
OK could someone start working on a way to get these things back once they are no longer working!! If we have the brains to build it why cant we develope a way to get them back!! Seems nonsensical!! (even if this rendition is a bit of an exageration)
all the objects are just job security for the future people who are going to live and work in space,im shure once we master space travel and life in space we are going to need to recycle and re use alot of things that are in space.my concept of base on the moon is in 3 stages, first you shuttle to space from earth connect to a space dock to unload cargo, people, etc. second a space "trucker"(using a special ship only use in space) ships said cargo to a an unloading dock orbitinig the moon, finally a special ship is used to transport the cargo to the surface of the moon! the space "Truckers" are not your standard astronauts needing only to enter the earths atmospher less than the pilots that ship goods to the space dock from eaths surface.as tecnology is improving old tecnology will need to be cleand up and reused or disposed of properly..i can only imgine that lots of meatal would reflect important sunlight out into space...whitch would lead private contractors to colect said space junk!like i said befor creation of new jobs! awesome
It's interesting to think about, Appearently with all the space within 300-400 mi off earth can cantain about 50,000 objects safely, however most of the space junk is more towards the 500-750 mi range. which can hold 15.25x more stuff. The irony is that with 16,000 orbitals around earth, means that the mercury inside the atmosphere will rise 0.8% (+0.1 per 2000 objects)every year, as the rotation of the orbitals are made of metal usually therefore provides some endothermic heat back to earth. That being said, say goodbye to winter sports in about 20 years, assuming that nothing more goes up or down back to earth. We should try to eliminate some space junk, making things a little better, but NASA is on food stamps, and can't provide much assistance on that matter right now. Also Companies should only send up things when they're needed, and sent back to earth in a burn shell or something when they're no longer functional. My two cents on the subject as always.
True to scale no doubt
Steven and BamaNurse.... Come up to my cabin on Coeur d'Alene Lake in Idaho and lay back on the dock on a clear night......you'll see at least four in an hour. Soon, there could be so much debris that one large crash will set off a chain reaction that could end satellite use as we know it.
Ah! Do you think they are a little out of scale.
Could this be what is causing global warming, or is it cooling, or warming, I keep forgeting. I am the product of the early seventies when we were using the same arguments for global warming, but I digress.
If this drawing was accurate in size of objects, no objects could be seen, thus rendering this drawing and the story that goes along with it useless or completely ineffective. But yeah, if there's a bunch of scraps orbiting the earth, there's that chance of the stuff colliding with man made spacecraft. But that's what life is all about....chance.
Idiots!
So, now, what do we do about this?
It's a wonder how me can even manage to get space shuttles out of the atmosphere without hitting any satellites or any other of that junk for that matter.
Yes indeed, I think that this should be a significant priority. However, with the collapse of the global economy now emminent, there is no way to effectively address the issue. Space is getting further away, not closer. On the bright side, liberals refer to this a the junk missile defense program because they can't think of a better way.
Interesting rendition. Who would've thought we would have so many objects in space in such a short time?
My 3 year-old just saw this, and said "Oh, Wall-E movie!" Wall-E is Disney's latest. It depicts a future earth inhabited only by garbage-stacking robots. The humans had to escape the destroyed planet to space stations. There is an animated scene very much like the depiction of thousands of satellites crowded around the planet. Hmm, maybe Wall-E's earth isn't so far away.
I wish somebody could of got this collision on video
gosh...is that for real?
Planet Earth and its humans are the North Jersey of the Universe. Octomom and her kids are the future.
Let's not over react folks. This is drawn nowhere near to scale. If it was, we would only be able to see one piece at a time. With many miles until the next one. Hence "Artist's Impression" as a caption.
The misleading part - the objects certainly are not to scale. It distorts our perception of the amount of space between objects.
The real reason for Global Warming, we have blankets of garbages around us. We're all worried about cleaning up the environment, first step is to STOP discarding in a mass of garbages and clean the mass up!
Umm 12,000 objects in space hardly seems exorbitant when compared with 6.7 billion humans on the surface of the earth. The amount of empty space in space is simply unfathomable, I wouldn't worry too much.
and to think that only 3 of those are for your tv!!!!!!
This artist unknowingly has the answer to solving a bigger problem, with all these sunblockers in orbit the temp of earth should be reduced drastically, thus solving global warming!!from one man made problem to a cure for another supposed man made problem aren't we humans intellegent
Does it really matter how accurate the artist was? The pic raises awareness of our impact on Earth. Ya got nothing to worry about, if your a planet.
This exaggeration was probably printed on Hemp.
Holy Cow! On the bright side, if aliens ever decided to attack, they'd have to wade through our junk field first. lol
This is just an artist's interpretation. The relative size of those satellites in the image would be similar to expanding every car on the earth to the size of the Empire state building. There are a lot of objects there, but do not be deceived by the image, 99.9% of space above earth is empty!!!
MANKIND IS NOT SATISFIED IN POLLUTING THE EARTH; HE IS NOW BEGINNING TO POLLUTE THE UNIVERSE. WHEN WILL HIS FOOLISH ENDEAVORS END?
It is almost comical to read some of these comments. It doesn't matter if its politics, religion, or environmentalism, once you choose a side you become blinded to any truth. We have forgotten how to search for the truth. we just blindly follow are convictions.
The same artist created the pictures of WMDs that Bush used to justify the war in Iraq.
This is a disgrace, I want the names of all those projects for the future space programs, I will put an end to all this nonsense.
We've faced air, water, and ground pollution, but now "space pollution"? Isn't there ANYTHING that humans CAN'T screw up?
This looks like an oppertunity for salvage employment from an enterprizing country not yet envolved in the world market of the 21st century. A solar system garbage company if you will.
The funny thing is that that is hardly anything!! With the larger diameter of orbit, relative to the surface of earth, there is a TON more room up there, not to mention that you have a third dimension to work with as well. 12,000 pieces of stuff is nothing. The city of Portland Oregon has 2.5 MILLION cars that easily fit in a fraction of the space. I know 12,000 seems like a lot, but these are very small objects in a VERY large volume.
these objects do move at an average of 10 kilometres every second (6.2 mi/s)thus covering quite a bit of space in a short period of time however those objects are tiny compared to the surface area of the earth (196,950 sq. mi) alone, mind you the area of their orbital path is greater than that of the surface area of the earth since they're farther out lol talent is overrated.
People are commenting like it's overcrowded up there--it's not. Keep in mind that in orbit, the "surface area" is a lot greater than that of the actual earth. Satellites can be about the size of a large SUV (possibly larger). There are a lot more than 10,000 cars on the surface of the earth. There's plenty of room in space for the space shuttle to manuever.
Mother nature has a way of shaking off all off it's fleas every so often. Don't think she is not getting ready to do it again. You know we are only visiting, one day we will join the dinosaurs. Hold on tight, the ride is just beginning.
I hope you all realize that satellites are much smaller than that. Our orbit in not quite that cluttered
CfromDallasTX: The alien you are refering to was Marvin the Martian.... and further more he is one of the first gladiators brought to this planet by the original trojans...... And with their sophisticated technology they were able to navigate through the many GIANT Satellites that are in fact polluting the area just outside of our atmosphere..... Just so you know!!!!!!!!!!
So when's that recycling frenzy gonna take over space, after taking over earth. I mean, there must be over 100 000 tons of scrap iron and other valuable components flying over our heads. So stop "spacing out" huhu.
wow....is this real?? or is this just some fake thing..are there reallly this many objects???????? btw i agree with joel...i'm scared...we need to do something about global warming, and our waste and pollution!!! cutting down trees, etc. seriously its like nobody cares..but people..i know this is a kids movie, but all of you have to see wall-e seriously...just watch it and then think about this "if we don't do something soon what happened on wall-e, could happen to us, except that its kind of unrealistic in the part that we can live in space while the earth improves...thats fake..how would we have enough food to last us that long???and fuel for the ship...how would we build something to fit in every human on earth???where would we get ellectricity?? where would we get soo much air to last us soo long??? where would our wastes go??? wall-e is realistic in the sense of what happened to the earth..but very unrealistic in the sense of what happened to us..the earth dies we die...SO WE NEED TO START WORKING NOW!!!!!! COME ON PEOPLE!!! PLEASE!!!! SAVE THE EARTH!!!
WOW, THE MAJORITY OF YOU ALL ON HERE IS DISGUSTED WITH THE PICTURE. WHAT MANY OF YOU REALIZE IS THAT IT'S ONLY TO MAKE YOU AWARE OF THE SITUATION. OF COURSE THE SIZE AND SCALE RATIO OF SATELLITE TO EARTH IS INCORRECT BUT, THE INFORMATION GIVEN TO LET YOU KNOW THAT THERE IS THIS NUMBER OF THINGS ORBITING THE EARTH IS CORRECT. WHETHER THE SPACE BETWEEN AND SIZE IS INCORRECT OR NOT, THE ARTIST WHO DID THIS IS APPLAUDED BY ME FOR THE INFORMATION THAT HE/SHE IS TRYING TO GIVE. EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW. IT'S NOT TO SCARE BUT TO LET EVERYONE KNOW THAT THIS IS WHAT IS GOING ON. IS YOU HAPPEN TO BEOME SCARED, IT'S YOU. JUST KNOW IF THERE IS A COLLIDE JUST AS PEOPLE SAID BEFORE IT WON'T HIT EARTH. IT WILL BURN UP BEFORE IT REACHES GROUND.
The size of the Earth in relationship to the size of 12000 pieces of debris... would not look like this picture. It's not an accurate picture, not that it was meant to be, but I just wanted to add my two cents.
Good impact, but exaggerated a bit. After all, putting all 12000 pieces in one landfill, they would not take up too much space. But all of a sudden the same 12000 objects appear to cover the entire surface area of Earth? Really?
Quite interesting but completely irrelevant
Another example of how people don't know the difference between art and life. 12,000 pieces of space junk wouldn't fill a football stadium. Nice visual commentary but misleading if taken literally.
Its not like this world doesnt have enough problems! Amazing isn't it that with this whole worlds technology that we as humans cannot figure out a way to not have this many different objects in space. Have we not figured out a way to combine features on these objects.
The sky is falling! The sky is falling! Okay, you've made me Chicken Little...now what?
i agree with royhdublinga, if people are serious about what they are writing, stop and think how big space is....12000 objects encircling the earth is kinda like 12000 beachballs on all the beaches of the world.....one is not even close enough to the other to say you can see two of them at the same time....use some common sense, people....geez
uh.. how about someone drawing this to scale? how unrealistic and stupid is this? why doesnt we show the debris on our freeways like this? where a can of coke is 1000 square miles. how stupid
There is no way that picture is to scale
Yes that's a lot of stuff, but let's put this in perspective. In this image you can see roughly 50 objects floating over China, a country the same size as the US. Now imagine 50 ariplanes of various sizes flying over the US in random directions and at random altitudes. Would the skies be crowded?
THIS....is so not safe
Maybe they should call Andy Griffith and restore Salvo1 to operational status and go out and get some of that junk and recycle some of the junk - who knows how much that stuff is worth in precious metals?
2012 Folks!!! This is the start of it. Read up on Nostradamus.
I will like to know, what kind of "Stimulus Package" Obama is going to come up to clean this mess. Lucy Fort Mill, SC
How do they plan to clean this mess up ???
Its an artist impression not a picture just FYI, it probably looks a lot different
We must be the renecks of the universe what all the trash in our yard
Who needs scale. I'm sure 99% of people who see this picture will think it's an accurate representaion
we have this much garbage around our planet, wait till aliens see what's on the surface!!!
This is probably the cause of 'Global Warming', our protective o-zone layers have been damaged from space travel while transporting this junk. Now we have to wait until this junk starts falling and killing people; the cost of knowing which way the winds blow.
Ups... problem!
Oh, how fear makes the trash go round!
Oh it is completely realistic if satelites are the size of New York State This is why even future artists shouldn't skip math classes at school
Does anybody realize this is artisic point of view and not real!!! Dont believe the hype
they should take this picture down. the comments on this page shows how most people believe anything they see. i'm sure there's tv shows or online clips now which show videos in space. watch it. won't see anything close to the camera other than what it's sitting on.
Sure;the photo is not realistic, disproportionate and exaggerated. But still "what a bunch of SLOBS"leaving trash everywhere!!!
So I wonder is this to scale? 12,000 vs. the circumference of the earth makes it X number per mile? Not saying this is not an issue but just wonder how acute the picture is? We sometimes tend to exaggerate to make a point? As an example, if it is 3000 miles from Washington D.C. to San Diego that means you would have 4 units/debris per mile across the U.S. which is not the total world. This picture shows a lot worse situation than the problem may be but, again, not saying it is not something we do not need to work on.
The reality of WALL-E is definately closer than we all think..... Its time to wake up before we are shipped away from a ruined planet.
People are so messy now, even wit the outer earth
Appears that a piece of the space junk came down in Central Texas earlier today...only rational explanation for the flaming "chunk of something" that dozens of people reported to 911 while driving on IH-35. If anyone knows for certain that it was in fact space junk that landed in Bell, McLennan, or Coryell County, please confirm.
This is horrible!!!!!! Is this the place where our spaceship and all other space ships dump there trash? What are we doing to our future? Lets go ahead and cause more damage until there is nothing left except junk!!!!!!! 1 unhappy humanbeing.
This is a lame rendition. These objects are extremely small in real life & 12,000 around the entire earth is next to nothing.
This is insane how is it that we have all this crap floating around earth and no one's doing anything to change it!! I mean come on do u really think that flying cars and stuff is going to make anything better?? our world is being destroyed and we're all to busy doing other things... this pic really bothers me as u can see because (as others may agree) I like our planet and even though it's not perfect it's the only home we got! It's time for a change people!!!
i think that if this photo his reel mayby sombody should do somthing about it like mayby take a big magnet to colect thease useless items and send them maby far away in space. cose mayby it coses probulms for hearth!!! dooooo wake upp peaple this his our home lets clean it upp
For me it's simple. This picture is only the warped knowledge or lack of it of a stupid artist trying to make a political statement. Reading this blog just proves to me how ignorant 99% of the people are. You are willing to believe anything because you are too lazy to think and research for your self’s. You stupid people let the John Kerry’s of the world tell you the sky is falling in just like chicken little in fairy tale land. I did enjoy the fact that a few people that contributed to this blog had some brains.
For those who think this is "fake, unrealistic, or unimaginable," check out http://science.nasa.gov/RealTime/jtrack/3d/JTrack3D.html to see that there is quite a large amount os "stuff" up there. You can watch it in real time as well.
Although there is that much crap floating around our planet it doesn't look like this. I actually learned about all the space junk a few years ago at uni. We do have to plan our shuttle launches around the crap out there but it isn't as bad as this artist makes it seem. 1st the satelites are way too big and would just be a small dot in real life. Also all the crap in space isn't on one side of the planet, it is distributed pretty evenly around. Honestly though, if left unchecked, it will get this bad. We need to think of a better solution. Maybe if we focused more space missions on the moon we could build bigger satelites there.
Earths gonna have a dabree belt in not time at this rate>.>
looks like the city dump or is this trash in my space
We are not only killing our earth but we are also not giving a damn about space. what a shame!
I knew all along that an individual satellite was the size of California!
watamess!
Yes, this is an artist's rendition of space junk. Space junk can be quite small, but small junk in space acclerated can be detrimental. Fortunately, the space station is not in the same orbit, but lower. We have a tendency to say..."it's not a problem, it's just small stuff". So we REACT when we HAVE to deal with the situation, rather than be proactive and prevent the situation from getting worse.
Wow..... Its amazing I forgot how to spell debri right>.> Well read my last comment to see what I meen, if it goes up.......
Wow, people are really gullible! Are you also the people who take PETA to an extreme and think that people like me don't eat them because we feel it's cruel to be mean to them before you kill them for consumption? I mean since when does anything in humanity actually give a c r a p about our world we live in and take an oathe to obstain from destruction of it. Furthermore, the satellites in orbit are rather small and blown up for a dramatic effect! Sheesh Im out! :)
this isn't a picture. it's a work of art, and as such a work of fiction. It is NOT an actual picture... sex sells though i guess... people only want shock value, nobody cares about truth anymore.
This is very sad! I'm only 8yrs old and this is one of many problems my generation is going to have to clean up & try to save. SAVE OUR EARTH PLEASE!!!!!!!
Stop and think people. The earth is 24,000 miles around. So if all 12,000 were lined up in a row at one circumference then they would still be 2 miles apart. But they aren't all in a row, they're spread out so they are much farther apart. In addition most of them are in geosynchronous orbit so they aren't moving in relation to each other. You also add to that fact that they differ in altitude and in my opinion it seems pretty amazing that they actually had a collision. Think about all the innerspace debris that we have and how many times do you hear about planes colliding in air except at an air show where they are trying to push the envelope? PEOPE QUIT LETTING MASS MEDIA YELLOW JOURNALISM DRIVE YOUR FEARS! This is half the reason why we're in the shape we're in. The only thing we have to fear is fear itself, remember?
This is just another exaggerated liberal illustration of debris in space trying to create bad press for NASA and the US government, regardless of the success space programs bring to the safety of our homeland.
You'd think that people would realize that space exists in three dimensions so that yes, there IS a large quantity of machinery in constant freefall (not zero gravity, which is a misnomer) the shuttle only flies in the plane of satellite orbits for a few seconds. ANNND the ISS is many miles higher than telecommunication, military, etc satellites. Isn't it nice that there are so many people to point at the problem but help is asked none raise their hands.
earth in pic, app.3.5"/ 2 white obj.just left of center 1&1qt."fr top.app 1qt" appart. On earth,253440 qt"in 1 mile. at 200? miles out. I get app.9600 miles appart.assuming the pic were even close to being accurate.
I agree with royhdublinga. This is another media exageration. Think about spreading those 12,000 objects in the US, can you see any of them? Maybe just only one if you happen to be sitting next to it. You virstually cannot see them. The earth surface including the ocean is many many times larger than US area.
Oh Please, that must be MIGHTY BIG SPACE JUNK! Or, perhaps the EARTH has shrunk to the size of Disneyland. That's it, this is a new ride.....sorry, it's just not to scale.
Wow nice guestimate but I think we'd be dodging satelitte missles hurling to earth from all that debris. AmPat: mine was lovely hope yours was too. MT: Don't know where you got you idea of marriage but could you share it with my spouse? I could use a few nights rest... Cheers to all
Although I can appreciate the risk, here are some more realistic numbers to consider...If our usable orbit range was 25 miles (lowest orbit to the highest orbit, and the square miles of each of those orbits equals the square miles on earth surface(t's greater, but makes the math easier). That would give us a total of 4,923,510,000 sq/mi or 410,292 sq/mi per piece of space debris. To bring this back down to Earth...I'll hide a basketball in 16,411 Sq/mi (about the size of Maryland + the bay) and give you a lifetime to find it. You can even have all of your friends help if you like! :-)
this is really serious matter
This is why the world does not trust journalist!! 12000 pieces that could fit in a small warehouse does not constitute the depiction of this photo. For the record, this is not a real issue and it affects us as much as a tsumami in Oklahoma. Most debris will burn up long before it hits earth and if debris does take out a satellite, there is redundency X 10 to address this risk... Next, there will be a group of scientist wanting $100 million dollars to do a study of the risks of this space trash. We are a disgrace...
I do admit that there are many pieces of junk flying around our planet and most are in a decaying orbit and most will burn up in the atmosphere before they reach the ground. However, this "picture" is just a propaganda ploy by left-wing liberals to create some more paranoia get some federal dollars flowing into their coffers. This is an excellent example of "propaganda" and what it looks like in its inception before the media and politicians start running with it, so "teach, theach your children..." CSNY
We need to Recycle all that Junk and make something from the Excess.
UFO's must have a tough time avoiding all that crap !
why does VENUS seem to be brighter than it has ever seemed before in the past
You know, even at my age (15), this is ridiculous. How could the world's governments allow such a !@#$ up to happen? There must be some strict regulation on orbit patterns am I correct? Just imagine what it will be like in a few years...this is a bad path for the world. Joe
Is this even to scale?
There goes our tax cut. to clean it up of course! Lies!!!
It's a good thing we have all those satellites blocking the sun's rays or we would really be in trouble with global warming. What a crock, just like the artist's rendition.
wow dont you know that we did this for our own reseasons
I don't think it that now, but this is more to show what could happen in the future if we don't start taking care of the problem now. Even an avalanche can start from a tiny pebble. Why put of our problems off for our kids and grand kids to deal with. Ain't that what our parents did to us with the polutions and smog, and look where we are. Do you want future generations to remember us that way?
This is the dumbest picture I have ever seen. The artist needs to go back to artist school and redo the day they taught about size. He's obviously getting the attention he wanted for this idiotic picture.
It's definately not realistic in a picture type sense. but in a futuristic type sense yes. You can BUY a spot in space to put your own sattilite and you rent that space every month. So more and more billionaires and tv shows buy those spots in space and eventually that's what it will look like. Soon enough we won't be looking at stars. We'll be looking at sattilites. Ever seen Wall-e? Ya that's pretty damn accurate for an animated movie.
this would make a good sicfi/action movie... just like "The Day After Tomorrow"... "s***!" that scared me, had bad realistic dreams of it for about a month or so...
What does all those sattelites do to the o-zone layer and does it contribute to pollution? It's a real mess. God created this planet, for us to take care of, and what do we do, get paid for all the resources this planet offers, and now were going to steal from other planets, for resources that we run out of. money is the root of all evil, This is the end times, 2nd Timothy, in the bible, read it.
Well I hope this photo is grossly overstated. And why isn’t there anything compelling these governments and companies to clean up their mess? I’m pretty sure the debris can be linked to each culprit.
i think these broken pieces are in an orbit much higher than the space station , so they shouldn't be a big threat to it,they sure are though to spaceships leaving earth orbit,or high orbit satellites, i don't know if they will cause space communication interference or maybe even how much sunlight they might block, maybe not much ,but all in all this unfortunate accident shows a gross irresponsability of this and previous generation to the future of our planet and its people.they never had any plans to clean up ,just plans to pollute!
way to go now you give us economy and now this and global warning.
"An artist impression" to say the least. First of all the size of his satellites would have to be the size of Massachusetts or Road Island to be that visible. also they obit the earth in an elliptical orbit that puts most of them passing the equator at some time. Hence we face our satellite dishes south and people of S. America, Africa, and Australia point theirs north. A better impression would to have something similar to the rings of Saturn.
For the people on here dissing teh art work. "That's why it's called an artist's impression and not an actual." From an earlier person, read comments before commenting? The art isn't what it looks like from space. Its just giving you an idea of what is happening. You cannot draw it to scale on so little of a picture. GG.
Thats to bad that this had to happen but to be honest did anybody ever think it wouldnt??. And to those who say they have seen picts and it doesent look like this. First, it just happened. How do u know what it looks like. Little bits of crap floating everywhere. Im sure is a mess. Oh and CF your thinking of Marvin the Martian
No wonder aliens[MARVIN] have quit to earth as much as they use to,[afraid they will have to clean it up,and someone should have to!]!HAVE A NICE DAY!
Heh, this looks just great! What we've done here on Earth is create more and more waste and pollution. We are now doing it in Space. I am sure some of those little Aliens are getting P--off with us about now. However,no worries I am working on a jumbo magnetic sweeper vacuum satellite. Should get rid of all the clutter. Just need someplace to plug it in!!
My daughter watched a Discovery show on elephantitus once and cried herself to sleep thinking she would get this horrible disease. Her reaction to the show was totaly unreasonable, like many of you who think we the earth actually looks like the painting. If you really care, get rid of your cable TV, telephones, computers, cell phones, radios, Sirius, GPSs, etc. If you don't you're a hypocrite.
Don't let Mayor Daley see this, he'll figure out a way to charge them all for parking up there.
wow that is a mess its really scary to see our earth like that what can we do to keep it not like that?
Hey, A new job... space garbage man!!
They really need to clean that trash up! They need to take a huge net and try to collect it! Theres going to be more collisions because satellites or shuttles will get hit by these pieces! The aliens wont be to happy if their shuttles get hit by our stupid flying trash! Yall better do something about this!
Oh, look, ...you all have something other than politics to talk about for a few minutes
Maybe all the junk in space will deflect some of the suns rays and reverse the effects of global warming. : )
Lets waist a few more **BILLION** Dollars to put some more floating trash in space...LMFAO! By the way for those of you that can't read the topic of the artwork...It's a rendition of computer animated artwork...Duh! It's not actual facts (no matter how goofy it may seem)...
Amazing how all that junk looks about the same size as New Jersey.
This would make it real easy for E.T. to hide wouldnt it ?
Great Image...
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We should hold those who placed it there responsible for its removal.We are on the brink of our own extinction."For the time is at hand".{Rev.}
The more junk we put into space, the better protection from outside forces trying to enter our atmosphere. Anything trying will immediately hit a piece of space junk and be rendered inoperable or crash land, such is the price we have to pay for total protection.
cool yo
I guess we're done polluting down here, space is the next step.
Though 12,000 pieces is cause for alarm and we should be more prudent about adding to that number. This picture is an extremely bad example of the "space junk" Perhaps the artist could have used something called scale in order to give a more accurate perception of the problem.
I see the naysayers are out in full force. That's good; let's just ignore the problem ~like we do every other problem~ until its too late to do anything about it. Maybe then we can all relocate to Mars and ruin that planet too. :)
The person who designs a satellite and space junk eater/capturer will make millions!!!!
It is, indeed a shame that things are heading in the direction that they are, but this is just nonsense. Maybe in the next 2ooo years if we double our garbage output, Our orbit could look like this. We get the point. It's time to shape up and respect Mother Earth. Many are already doing more than their fair share to counteract the damage we've done over the last hundred years. Thanks for the laugh, though. I do like the picture. It's a neat projection of a man's beliefs
Man, those are some BIG satellites. I hope you people realize that the "artists interpretation" is a little different from the real thing.
That's weird!!!!! Is that going to affect the Earth??
Wow What a mess ....Jus like everything else
I wonder what God is thinking about us now
we have made a mess of our earth with Pollution over the year's, now we have to make a mess up there in space, Why, are we ever going to make a DIFFERENCE, for our children,
for perspective if this was to scale then each satilite is about 280 miles long (which is greater than the distance from boston to philadelphia, assuming you travel in a straight line) -Trevor stated "Earth's total surface is an area that measuring 197,000,000 square miles and there are only 12000 objects around it so i would think the chances of two things colliding is actually pretty slim". but keep in mind these satalites are out of the atmosphere which has a larger area than the surface of earth
Just Look as to how we as a spieces are destroying the very place we all depend on to live. This is what Big business wants ......look at our enviroment....Shame on us.....as our childrens children will live in a world just like Mad Max..When are we going to care as a spiecies about our planet???This should make all of us cry out in outrage.
Do we have satellites as big as Canada? If I were the "artist", I wouldn't disclose my name. Who would want to hire someone who's depth perception is so off kilter? However, I get the point that our atmosphere is becoming more polluted with earth-generated space debris. They could have just tried to be a little more realistic.
if this were to scale each satelite is about 280miles long or the distance from philadelphia to boston
hey wampler.......wasn't it MAJOR TOM....
wow seriously u people are so dum in that were to scale they would have to be be millions of them and all 100miles wide use your head no that much junk has even beeen sent up there
What a mess, when can we the people on earth going "get it" we just destroying our surroundings. Junk on earth and junk in universe...scary...What are we thinking!
Hey, there is a lot of space out there.
that really isnt acurate... some of the satellites are the size of california that this picture shows....
Doesn't "RATIO" of size of space junk to size of earth ring a bell to ANYONE? 12,000 pieces of space junk is not good, but "Stop The Madness" with that artist's propoganda. You nailed it on the head Keon.
COMPLETELY FALSE IMAGE!! I assume MSNBC likes lying to its readers? The Sats aren't even dots on this scale and they aren't in random orbits, aren't in polar orbits anywhere near as much. What a complete lie of an image.
I live 50 miles south of Dallas, TX..this morning we heard an explosion loud enough to rattle our windows...we are in the area where the space shuttle fell upon reentering the atmosphere a few years ago so my husband ( a fireman who was involved in recovering pieces) and I knew exactly what it sounded like..we turned on our scanner and reports were coming in from 3 surrounding counties of explosions and things falling from the sky..I've been searching the web all day to see what in space it could have been.
wow wonder how many of them crash into eachother everyday!!
If those images were true to scale...the satelites would each be the size of manhattan! This is just an inflamatory painting...
Wow. Not the satellite, how people can't even agree if there's an issue here. Some buy into it completely, while others say it's all made up. Unless one of these comments here was written by someone who has actually seen or has not seen the truth, we have no room to talk. So the real problem is either we are dirtying up space, or the media lies WAY to much. Decide on that, then argue about this picture. www.obeygiant.com
OK! just something else to account for our earth's sickness...Its not ok! Its not natural for our surrounding atmosphere. The earth will react to this event. More intense and frequent volcanoes, earthquakes, common storms and drought is very possible. Bible is right!!
If only the nerds had some common sense
this is alarming. i am no space guru, but if they can send things into space they should be responsible to take them out!
ah thas crazy, and interesting.
Duh its not actual size it says artistic impression. It shows them much larger than they are so you get the concept of how many satellites are in orbit. If it were to scale those satellites would be double the size of some states.
Hey we garbaged up the planet, why not space too... Then maybe other higher intelligent life forms will one day see it and know that there was what pretended to be intelligent life forms who once inhabited this planet until by pollution they killed themselves.....
In 1983 i shot model rocket with my hampster "Mindy" in it. Never found it... I wonder if its up there?
If there are really 12,000 objects in Earth orbit and in the photo as represented, then there must be 0 thousand on the other side of the Earth that cannot be seen.
All of these satellites and we still can't find Ossama Bin Laden.. someone is not telling us the truth
WOW....................! I wonder what God thinks about all of this?
who has a swiffer?
With the technology we have now we can take those down and put up like 100 new ones and still have the same work being done a lot of those don't even have the copasity of the the average home computer today I bet.
This picture makes me sad. Mainly because it is poorly done.
We need a giant space dumpster lolz or a black hole :)
You idiots... it's an artists conception... Those satellites are MILES apart and most are just a few inches across... If this was a real picture, you would see ANY of them, so everyone CHILL OUT....
Does anyone else feel ashamed to be human? What, it's not enough that our species is slowly killing our only planet with our wastefulness; that we're now bring our destructive blatant disregard to the rest of the solar system. I know space is bigger than we could ever imagine, but there's eventually going to be some sort of consequence to all this. There has to be if it true that every action has an opposite and equal reaction.
Resistance is futile...or wait...Earth needs Global Advantage (flea medication)but yeah AWESOME pic lol soooooo realistic I mean I see sats every night...it's like a sport to see how many you can spot at night. But I can see where the artist is coming from...trying to show how much junk is in space. See well rounded discussion with myself. *smiles*
Talk about chicken little. Some day it will all come back on us, if nothing is done about it.
I feel that this illistration is a a complete misrepresentation considering that it's a two dementional drawing that has to support all 12,000 objects. But if the artist had made a 3D representation of their illistration it would be a perfect repersentation of those 12,000 object. Oh, can someone please tell me how many of those objects are man-made?
Each of these 12,00 pieces according to the artist redition is larger than New York City. In reality, it would be difficult to PLAN a collision between two objects.
cool i love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Disgusting. Not only are humans mangling the surface of the Earth (water, land, air, noise, and light pollution), now we need to dump our trash in the sky above us. Eventually, we'll have our own ring system in a few thousand years, (see: Saturn) and/or we will lose more astronauts and spacecraft, simply due to "junk collisions".
Looking for Astronaut Certified Scrap Metal Entrepenurs. Paying Well. Estimated start date, two weeks. Ha!
This picture is just a joke. Obviously things don't look like this... Unless the Earth was the size of the city of Boston. This is just an artistic picture.
read the few sentences below the picture and dont you thinks its odd that the U.S. and Russian sattelitres collided? the U.S. and Russian space programs have some very remarkably smart people working on how they can get the sattelite up into space and revolve perfectly in its own orbit seperate from the others, they also spend ALOT of money researching, testing and then actually performing these operations
It means that people have to learn how to pray "OUR FATHER"...
They protect us from Cosmic Radiation Rays.
Why isnt there any good news anymore?
You people realy believe this ? come on ! sure there's debri out there, how can there not be. next we'll be going back to clean up the Moon, oh wait, i forget, that was a hoax too !
Now that's a hoot! How did Stephen Colbert and The Onion get scooped on this one? Have to wonder who the computer-generated artist is ... ;)
the overwhelming majority of space junk is smaller than a baseball. Not to say that something that size would not cause catastrophic damage to a craft. But, to dramatize the issue by showing thousands of Connecticut sized objects is beyond ignorant.
so... how do they get all that stuff down?
Give me a break. That picture of 12,000 earth orbit objects is ridiculous. The earth has over what 5 or 6 billion people and it isn't that crowded. What size are these objects anyway?
That picture is ridiculous non-sense the europeans are kind of irrationals with those models. Just image the size of the Earth. Each sattelite is about the size a car just make the number and don't get impresed by a dummy european who want to be popular.
Look's like one of the beginning scenes of WALL-E.
I'm all for being responsible and taking care of our enviroment (for future generations sake)....however I'm not buying into the illistration....looks like another enviromentalist scare tactic to me. I won't start pissing my pants until I see a honest to God picture. Not one painted by Bob Ross....happy little tree!
Oh Good, Maybe Jesus will come back soon.
Please, for all of you people who think that this impression shows all these objects in a close array, you are wrong. Each object is a couple hundred to a thousand miles away. The space might look crowded, but it isn't.
This picture is funny, but that's about it. There is far more space in orbit above the earth than there is on the earth's crust. This picture has over exaggerated the issue, but i think that's the point. We might need to take more precautions with the placement of our satellites. Maybe in another 1,000 years will this be a real news story. So please people! Don't freak out!
are you serious?? does anyone really know how much space is in space, or how many satellites it would take to fill it? the earth is a little bigger than depicted by this ameteur artist. this picture is childish. if 12000 satelites were placed on the earth's surface with equal distance between them (including the oceans surface), you wouldn't be able to see one from another even with the best binoculars, the earth's curvature would hide them from each others' line of sight. and they'd be even further apart when farther away from the ground. it would take trillions of satellites to fill up the earth's orbit, not thousands. if he had drawn it to scale, the satelites wouldn't even be visible, because they're that small. it makes me cry to see that so many people have no idea about how the size of a satelite relates to the size of our planet. i've lost all faith in the mental faculties of our species after viewing this blog.
Obviously not to scale... if it was those objects would be the size of entire cities. A true rendition would show 12,000 microscopic dots that we couldn't even see. Think about it, 12,000 cars in a parking lot at sporting event don't take much space.
This reminds me of that movie Wall-E.
So this is what it looks like when my 18 year old's room reaches critical mass!
Where is the MIR space station?
I'm 53 years old and still waiting on my flying car like they promised me back in the 60's.
are these satellites drawn to scale?
Please put up millions of pieces of space junk to stop global warming. It will reflect the gamma away. Whatcha think about that? Instant solution to our global warming problem.
It should be mandatory,Space junk should be retrieved by the companies who put profit from it's use. There should be restrictions and laws implimented for the removal of all inactive satellites. If they cannot find a way to bring it back to Earth, they should then develope the technologies to have it self destruct, or have rockets installed that would make these satellites move out of earths orbit all together.. how about the Sun.. send all of Earths crap there!!! maybe we could make previsions here to get rid of all this biological waste we have down here.. afterall there is alot of WASTED flesh on this planet.. as you can see by reading some of these lame .....(:
Klingon spacecraft during fleet wide cloaking device maintenance.
Could this be a cause for global warming? And other weather problems arising in this decade???? We are so stupid...
Are you sure this doesn't represent 12 trillion objects? There are 5 or 6 billion people on this planet and it isn't as crowded as this picture is representing. If you believe this I can honestly say you have no common sense! Who's checking facts before they publish crap like this? why is my post going no where???
Rich Shulman, what a dumb picture. Why did you even bother?
This picture is very misleading, there is no reference to scale. Given size of the earth in this image, each one of these objects is the size of a small country. Please inform the artisit that it is critical to scientific images to scale so that a correct interpretation may be inferred. On this basis, the ESA should be embarrassed to release such a scientifically inaccurate depiction
Its an exageration, Scaleing shows that it is, and it does state its an artists impression, not actual fact. so please dont continue blowing this out of proportion like everything else.
I think whatever is up there that isn't supposed to be there, and whoever is responsible for putting the rest of the junk should be responsible for getting it down. They trash the oceans and now space. Someone has some cleaning up to do. Looks to me like they will use space next to orbit all the trash in the world if they run out of landfills or junk yards.
Richard Shulman, what does a editor do? Who is responsible for this dribble? By the way, trying to post a message is unbelieveably difficult. This keeps saying I can only use LETTERS for name, cityandstate, guess what that is all I have used. I am trying for the third time to post!!!
LOL...Don't be fooled by the picture..When there are this many objects of this size, then you might want to worry..12,000..First of thats a little on the low side..but really , think about it. They several mile up, and in space, which gives them an even greater cicle and more room. Think about it this way. Drive around the planet in a car with only 12,000 cars(and thats 2D)chances of a collision are pretty slim.
I wonder about all of the people who are complaing. Do each of them own cell/mobile phones ? Dish TV ? Cable ? They seem to want it all and are not willing to accept the cost !
Haha, doesn't it remind you a little of the movie WALL-E? Where they go out into space and go through the "atmosphere" of junk?
We are only human, thats what we do,we make a mess of everything.
By all rights this should not have occured, when the Russian satelite became a defunct space structure Russia should have removed it from orbit.God knows theyv'e been in space enough times since the satleite became defunct, they could have asked NASA to bring it home on any of the last space shuttle missions.we can only slow down the polluting of earth but we can STOP the polluting of space before it gets any worse.
as we already know this is just an illustration of how bad artists are these days, if there were that many objects that close to earth that had any real threat to humanity they deffinatly wouldnt try to spread the news by just msn. Regardless, this as said, is a real poor picture of low altitude debri in space, yes if things were as illustrated we would be able to see many of these objects in our mid priced telescopes.....but we don't. after all without all these b/s pictures and stories books and newspapers what would we americans have to worry about
I don't believe that it was the artist intent to show or imply that these are in actual size. If he had then, some of these satellites would be the size of my entire state of Missouri. However, it does do a nice job of illustrating that we are currently doing to space, what we have been doing to our planet, Earth, since the turn of the industrial revolution and the birth of mass consumerism. Only YOU can prevent, what is sure to be, our next global ecological catastrophy.
How is it possible for a space shuttle to land back in Earth without colliding into anything....
Omg!that is so scary....what if it goes into the atmosphere and drops...my imagintion is very vivid.....i just hope it doesnt become a reality......
Just another reminder that we haven't even cleaned up our environment and we're turning space into a dump site.
Wow, there are 12,000 satellites, each the size of the moon orbiting the earth, who knew?
WooHoo!!! Just goes to show the whole human race consists of a bunch of rednecks...
Keep in mind that this is NOT TO SCALE...so it's not as bad as it looks...all of the green-peacers can calm down. Not to hijack the thread too much, but if you want to see a real mess of litter look at all crap the 'in-tune-with-the-planet' mountain climbers leave up on Everest--thousands of oxygen bottles, equipment, etc. From the photos I've seen It's pretty a pretty ugly sight up there on Everest.
Disgusting people. Let's open up our eyes Now!
those things are kinda LARGE don't ya think.
Why is practically everyone on here so stupid? Please, if things were like this, every time a ship was jettisoned into orbit, we'd have a celestial hailstorm. And I haven't seen those fireballs yet.
leave Nadya Suleman alone jealous people and such cruelty ...you choose to deprive those babies and you just want attention..honey i am sure you aren't paying her bills.
This picture shows 12,000 satellites over 1/2 the earth. Of course it looks crowded.
I agree with some of the others here. Very unrealistic. Yes there are 12000 objects up there, however tis pic show as if they were all HUGE satalites. Most are very small and the earth is so huge a vehicle can past through this mostly junk and never see any of it. Thats because the earth is large and the peices are very spread out. Its like the asteroid belt... in the movies space ships dodge the asteroids... in real life they are millions of apart.
Totally unrealistic. There's much more space up there for these things, those satellites are very small in contrast. Imagine spreading 12,000 satellites out across the planet, not very cluttered at all... then multiply the space available and you probably can't even see one from another.
omg! Wall•E was right!
Looks like with all of our smarts and technology, we still end up collecting and dumping our trash if not on our planet but around it.
We look like Sanford and Sons!
okay maybe the artist should use the same scale for the earth and the satelites. or at least something closer to the same scale.
61 must be the limit for posts? Either way is it a liberal view of things. Kinda stupid really. Anyone who believes that the sun will be drow out by these is a retard. Then again, judging by alot of these posts, there must be alot of retards out there. "this is terrible...blah blah blah". Sad part is, these people think they are right.
why don't they just throw it back to earth?
Well as u all cant read its been computer generated(A computer-generated artist's impression released by the European Space Agency (ESA) depicts an approximation of 12,000 objects in orbit around the Earth. A communications satellite belonging to US company Iridium collided with a defunct Russian military satellite on February 12, 2009.) Where this is what it could look like if there were 12 thousand objects
Hey - I got an idea ... let's have a X-Prize to see which company can come up with a plan to collect space garbage and execute the plan. Surely some private company can come up with a vehicle designed specifically for collecting small and medium pieces and effectively eject the stuff out of the planets orbit. It would take a crew to run it from the ground and possibly years worth of collection, but eventually, it would clean up the stuff most worried about. Everytime its collection is full, it would have to take off toward the sun, then fire reverse rockets while releasing the garbage. It would be remote piloted back to the space station from time to time to refuel. It could use an electromagnet and small robotic arm for the collection into a van sized hold. I'm sure the details could be worked out ... and it would give a few companies something to work on.... I could be dreaming, but until someone gives a shot at designing such a thing, who knows?
No wonder it is so tough to get a good sun tan these days.
well, thats a first in human history! trashing a place, before we colonate it. Maybe the Aliens will declare war.
Quite an exaggeration! If there were only 100 countries(and we know the earth is much bigger than that)then there would be 120 objects over each country. That's a little more than two per state over the United States. Then there is all that open area over the oceans. Go figure......
ok people, if you are saying "ohh this is unrealistic, blah blah blah" put in mind its an artists illistration of what it looks like to visualy put into your mind a number of how many things are floating our planet, because seriously, if there were satalites that big circling earth, we could probably hardly see the moon at night, so stop thinking everything you see is the real thing
The depiction is total BS. The size of the satellites are TOTALLY out of proportion and they are not all in the same orbital plane. I'm surprised that the ESA would release something so outrageously bogus. Stop perpetuating lies!!!
is there any coffin amidst this mess. i heard that there is people whom are willing to pay in order to be graved out in space
I love how the people bite on this and take it as face value. If this was the case the shuttle could never go into space. 12,000 objects around the earth is not that much. Figure most objects are not that big. People who take this picture at face value are the same people who believe in global warming. We would have one hell of a show at night if this was the case. Move along people nothing to see here.
Hey Al Gore, this space junk is trapping the heat in the earth causing global warming, brought to you by your internet.
Look what the hell we have done, now what junk dealer is going to go clean up this one ?
At least no aliens will be able to find us.........
This picture is a tad over done, even 12000 satelites wouldn't show up like it does here compared to the size of earth. in space at this distance, you wouldn't even see them. it's a joke at best, anyone at nasa would laugh at this pic! it's a good idea tho,we should shoot all our garbage into outer space instead of polluting earth. I bet in the future most people after they die, will be shot into outer space. it will be the new trend,so few have all ready done.
Obviously this is just an artists rendering. The fact is that these 12,000 objects occupy an enormous amount of space. Of course the odds of these types of collisions are very low but given enough time and enough artificial satellites in orbit, collisions will happen. Maybe cleanup of earth orbit will help boost the economy.
woah. now that doesn't look so good. think we should act on it now. we are polluted inside and outside as a planet. :(
Sandyfromcolorado Don't be so arrogant. We don't have enough power to ruin this planet much less the Universe. Sure we may kill ourselves and some other life here but the Earth will recover. We are just a speck in this Universe. Life will go on. The question is if we will be a part of it.
How sad... We're even contaminating space... Shame on us for doing this to this beautiful planet, to doing this to ourselves.
Let wish this is enugh, this dissaster done by big countrys.
Hope this is the last time.
The solution to all this junk, at least in the future (because all of it will eventually fall back to earth)is quite simple; but, because of the extra cost involved it will likely never occur. However, all that need be done is to install retro-rockets to safely send the junk towards the oceans once their orbits decay beyond the usefullness of the devices: it is the same principle employed on the Hubble telescope. In other words, once the orbit decays to the point the satellite is useless, get it out of the orbit entirely and make some room up there.
Waldo would be the Earth, right?!
This is ridiculous. As others have already said, the satellites are incredibly huge in this 'illustration'. Someone should make one of these 'impressions' for estimated mosquito population densities, except make the dots the size of London. Then people can freak out about the 'mosquito problem'.
I agree with royhdublinga. None of you should believe this nonsense. Space only contains about 40 (if even) satellites known to non-government parlor. It is a rumor and very large myth that the government and companies that require satellites just send them up there. A satellite collision as such is just do to an irregular path in the orbit of themselves. And this can eventually cause a collision that nothing can be done about. Folks, do not listen to people on any .com site because they are almost always subdued to lie and canive to people like yourselves who believe in all this JUNK! Furthermore you should rely on .gov sites for factual information. .com is short for commercial adevertising for a reason!
If the satellite objects were drawn to scale they would appear as only pin pricks,if that, and the image would not convey the same sense of alarm. Let's be more realistic and cut back on the doom and gloom scenarios. We are getting enough of that from our president.
Anyone that believes this picture has no common-sense. It is so far from scale its not even funny.
all i have to say is watch the movie "the day the earth stood still"
WALDO IS REALLY THERE?! WHERE?!
How soon are they offering one way FLOATING tickets out of this GREED FILLED, NATURE GENOCIDING (FOR PROFIT OF COURSE), UN-RESPECTFUL, SOON TO BE A CESSPOOL PLANET! We are one of the only animals on earth who destroys other beings & things NOT EVEN for reasons other than FOOD!!!!!
Just need to send my wife up there in a rocket ship. The way she drives, all that jumk would be knocked out of the sky in about 10 minutes....
We are working very hard with recycling inside the earth. However, we are missing the main piece... We NEED to recycle outside of the earth to keep the engery focused on the ozone to nourish our atmosphere. Recycle inside and out!
Please! The size of the earth is nearly 25000 miles around the equator. Therefore, if you showed 12,000 objects circling the earth each object would have 2 miles in front and in back of it....IF say they were in a perfectly straight line around the earth...for example they would all have to be along the belt of the equator. So you see the sky is falling in those people's eyes that have failed to open their eyes in the first place. The pic would likely require there to be nearly 12,000,000 objects in space to be somewhat realistic.
for dobromirescu: are proud of being a "green" Romanian ... of envy... that is?
Ok so the picture is doctored up to exagerate all of the stupid flying stuff up there I get that ...BINGO!!! but is there any way of cleaning it up? besides waiting till it falls out of the sky if it does at all?
Some people just want to watch the world burn...
I have sent you two comments: one about the space debris in the photograph pictured above, and on where the firefighter is giving a drink to the koala bear. In each instance, where your space for NAME, CITY, AND STATE is, it will ONLY allow me to put my FIRST NAME. it will NOT except my LAST NAME,CITY,or STATE. It states: only letters...
******Read This****** HUMANS POPULATED THIS EARTH! AND WE THINK ANIMALS THAT HAVE TO BE PUT ASLEEP BECAUSE IF WE DONT THEY WILL POPULATE THE EARTH,,,CRAZY. I'M thinking if god is leting us crate are world now.
This is an excellent picture they developed, and it if it's accurate it gives us all a great idea of how bad the space trash is becoming. Is there anyway I can get a copy of this image just for my own personal use? I think it's pretty cool and wanted to keep it for reference.
Excuse me, make room, coming through.....BOOM....Ahhh...ooops.. sorry comrads......
That’s the price of learning, we can not create a way to collect the debris and direct it toward the sun. Where are the liberal extremist and why are they not protesting?
What a wonderful work of art. It amazes everyone.
Whoop, whoop, whoop. Danger, Will Robinson! Danger! Another crises to steal more money from the middle class and create 10,000,000 more jobs to start a space recycling program. Seriously if every piece of space junk was 50' long (the size of a school bus, which they aren't) you would have 600,000' of debris in a straight line, or abought 114 miles. There is probably more junk at 1 landfill than what this picture depicts. More media sensationalism!
Warning: Objects in this image appear larger than life. Looking at the same image from space at approximately the same distance would show absolutely NONE of the "space junk" that this artist/hack would have you believe is there. Yes space junk is a problem, but no the earth does not have a peach fuzz coating like the enviro hand wringing wackos would have you believe. Thank God Obama is President, he will fix this....he will save us....
OHHHHHHHHH YEA SURE *rolls eyes* theres this thing called "global warming" LOL YEA RIGHT SEE THE WEATHER OUT SIDE!!!!!!!!!!!! Now Joel is right we do need to make a difference and it does start at home but the hole in the atmisphere in antarctica aor what ever its been there foreever!!!!! so just take it as a Precaution if u did not read it is a painting so it may be an exaguration so just chill back till we get real info. from National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) then do major changes so just chill life is short enjoy it dont freak out
looks like somethingg in WALL-E! lol :) haaa!
I believe that the International Space Station and any path that the shuttle would take, are far too low in orbit to be anywhere near the vast majority of this stuff. Only the errant piece that are falling to Earth present any risk (admittedly, there is some.) A Shuttle (I forget now which one, which flight, etc.) returned to Earth however, with a gouge in its forward window, containing a white paint chip! That piece of white paint was tested and positively identified as having come from one of the Apollo Moon Mission flights! A chip of paint no more significant than a fingernail clipping folks, in orbit for some 30+ years, embedded itself in the Shuttle. Pretty scary stuff right there...
Wow! This Fascinating stuff!! I wish I could have saw this!!
Our children have alot to look forward to,
this isn't even close to what it actually looks like up there. Doesn't anybody realize how big space is? Look at photos from astronauts to get a more realistic idea.
no room for another satellite, this parking lot is full.
I don't think it's real
Much ado about nothing. The artist enormously exaggerate the size of the pieces of debris. I mean some of these debris looks larger than the island of Jamaica - a 144 mile long 70 mile wide island! Most of the debris is probably no larger than a motorbike!
The way I see it is all this sruff is going to cover the earth and kill us like in the ice age time. I swear! except....we illed oursevles though pollution of our atmosphere. Least the animals back then didn't suffocate themsevels to death! Though I like the way the artist depictied the earth very nice.
I agree with DB in Seattle, Washington. Even so, we must remember that God is in control!
I suppose we will see a tax in the near future to "clean up space".
You know what KeonFromMaryland, it is true, global warming is happening right now, and half of us americans are too lazy to do something about it. dont critizie if you dont help.
anybody else bored
Ever see Wall-e? Might not just be a cute kids movie in a couple more centuries... Quite sad actually.
You guys have to remember that each of those pieces of debris are miles away from each other. I'm thinking that we use a magnet to clean up. Earth is going to become a celestial wasteland at this rate, s landfill. If there were other intelligent beings beside us out there, they would be frowning at our laziness or laughing at our stupidity and unresourcefulness.
Did anyone find Waldo?
it's weird how the earth gets 12,000 objects around it.
And everyone is suprised? thats alittle ignorant if you ask me, where do you all think your satelite TVs get their signal, how do you think gps works, how do you think google maps can see your house, where do we get pictures of far away galaxies and stars. the answer: satelites. AKA all that "junk" you see in that picture. you all take for granted the fact that we can put nearly anything into orbit around our planet, and to some of those bleeding hearts out there who say "how could we have let this happen!", get over yourselves. we have yet to put anything into orbit larger than 100 meters.
This is Ridiculous! There is no way that it is that crowded. People just think. The night sky is not that full of debris the night sky would be full of movement against the stars. Do you see anything moving around?
Junk marks the spot. Where's the Earth?!
Where's Wall-E when you need him!
Maybe when it gets so crowded that it blocks out the sun, and darkness fills the day, they will clear a small patch for a window view. Wow imagine the price of real estate in that section of the world. Ok that said, no it's not that crowded in a real aspect view, but considering how long it's taken us to get that many up there (a blip in Earths timeline) it could get bad very soon. Well this country is trying to create jobs.......anyone in line for satellite removal?
Hey look, it's a floating ice cream with sprinkles. Earth is full of new stuff.
Unrealistic yes, but the point is that there is a tremendous amount of junk circling our planet. People say not to worry but even NASA worries about a "paint flake", yes a paint flake, colliding with a shuttle. I do believe they track things smaller than 10 cm. If NASA is concerned about paint flakes, then they are certainly tracking items smaller than 10 cm (3.93 inches).
wow its just the movie wallie !
Wow! What a ridiculous photo. I'm glad that there are at least some people using common sense on this one. Just something else to scare "the masses."
This would be somewhat realistic if we had 20,000 space stations in orbit. This is what it would look like if we had 20,000 cities orbiting around Earth. This image is funny, I hope the artist realized.
Hmm, it looks more like fictitious imagery. Just simply looking at one object and calculating the size the object would have to be shows how obsurd this picture is. No, it isn't good to pollute the atmosphere around Earth but please, don't exagerate just to make a point. To many people already have free license to LIE each day. I could come up with a picture as well showing that there is nothing in the skies if I decide to lie. Just the facts and only the facts, that helps. Overall an interesting picture though.
This looks like something Al Gore would do. Are you sure that he isn't the artist?
This is a "artist rendition," not drawn to scale. 12,000 pieces in this amount is like a hand full of sand on the seashore. The artist makes a good point. However, this is only a speck in space that doesn't even become to compare with the multitude of garbage, trash, and junk on earth.
can you imagine? Maybe the stars that we see at the night sky, is not a stars but this?
Oh and you can see Satellite's with your naked eyes. Just pick a dark location, and look up. Before long you'll see a small dim light moving across the sky. Then another in a different direction. I star gaze with my telescope, and I'll see several every night out, just looking up - not through my scope - .
I’m so sick about everyone speaking about Nadia. My grandmother had 17 kids naturally and all my Uncles and aunt grew up to be very good and well respected adults in the community. People you need to mind your own business and take care of your own and stop gossiping.. I you live in a glass house please don’t throw stone!!! She will be fine with or without your help.
This is only a "artist rendition," not drawn to scale. 12,000 pieces in this amount of space is like a grain of sand on the seashore. The artist makes a good point. However, this is only a speck in space that doesn't even become to compare with the multitude of garbage, trash, and junk on earth. If all trash was made to this same scale of the sattelites we'd see mountains of trash coming off the earth.
Look what man has done to Gods creation.
UFO's!
earth surface is big enough to hold 12,000 or so sats... c'mon this renditions sucks, its not in scale. PURE yellow journalism !
Heck, without orbital satellites and all those other gismos, theres no T.V., no Internet, no cell phones. Realize that before you start screaming in frenzy "what have we done to our planet!?"
Thank You all Do Your Best! Got Tools?
When I saw the picture of the Trash surronding the earth, i started to cry. How sad for the earth and how ashamed I am as a human being. We were given something special and we are destroying it. We only have 1 earth and look at what we are doing to it. God forgive us please.
see you in hell in 2012
A brilliant rendition of the earth stated chicken little, he always knew "the sky is falling."
to think i died for this - jesus
RE: Berry Beths contributors comment, Hi Peeps! I’m so sick about everyone speaking about Nadya Suleman. My grandmother had 17 kids naturally and all my Uncles and aunt grew up to be very good and well respected adults in the community. People you need to mind your own business and take care of your own and stop gossiping.. I you live in a glass house please don’t throw stone!!! Why not speak about or chip in some idea ad how we should clean up the satellite mess which started due to man and will take an effect on earth and even mankind. This is an interesting topic. How about another like stop development stop cutting down tree especially in Colorado and start planting a few trees to help the environment and reduce the heat caused by global warming. You know if the trees were not destroyed which clean the atmosphere guess what we would not be in this global warming problem. Instead of speaking about Nadya why not speak about planting a tree for your local rotary.
I like wall e's trash filled earth better
"good job people" - god
Earth has stubble! Quick get it a razor!
We are likiking our own planet... is there a wat to stop this???
well....we have the lasers....so lets get in some target practice on this space junk....besides we need clear entry points for the ufos...
Okay, call me blonde, but maybe we should look twards outer space on some of our problems instead of talking only on "Global Warming" issues.
whyy does people alwayys ave to scare people. people could be happy next min thn look at this and get such a frighhtt. can people not go up there and clean up as they make us do around the earth.....
Wow. We should figure out a way to make all that stuff into a big umbrella. That oughta slow our global warming.
In my personal opinion. When they are no longer using a certain satellite, there should be a ejection system built in that will propel it away from earth. That way when we are done using one it won't clutter up the orbit. Send it toward the sun or something. It will burn up long before it ever reaches it. Or crash it into another planet.
lol, we're already destroying the earth n now we've covered space around the earth too with crap lol. Great...now how are the aliens going to land now huh?actually how are we going to get out?
Hey Look at that, stupid humans have figured out a way to pollute the outside of Earth as well as the inside. Boy arn't we smrt!!!
All of you that say this is out of proportion and the chance of one of these pieces colliding with the iss or anything else is unlikly. Remember just 2 objects found each other up there and made who knows how many more pieces of 20,000 mph junk. Good luck space travelers!
Please I mean come on if it were as cluttered as this picture showes it 1/2 our sunlight would'nt be getting through..those peices of debris would be the size of Japan or bigger ....hey maybe global warming will reverse..nice pic. for a cartoon book cover but unreal
Hahaha... wow so many gullible, uneducated Americans are freaking out over an exaggerated picture. The only people that are thinking with any amount of common sense here are the people acknowledging how "unrealistic" this picture is. First of all, even if we do have an incredilbly large amount of sattelites in orbit, they're so small in comparison to earth, they're not going to be remotely cluttered. Therefore space isn't going to look like a littered parking lot and the space shuttle will have plenty of room to pass by. The inncident with the colliding sattelites was a freak accident, not because space is so littered they're only floating ten feet apart. Secondly, THERE ISN'T SUCH A THING A GOLBAL WARMING! Thats strictly fools talk..
If it was nothing to worry about why are the astronomy majors and space aces wasting their time explaining? It is possible, believable, and at the same time unbelievable and impossible. I think the artist got exactly what he wanted from everyone, whether this credible or not.
Well...this one brought out a lot of comments, didn't it? I am now half blind. Some of you will understand.
Don't drink and spy! Also the photo is misleading, unless they've been lauching sattelites the size of a US County.
I'll volunteer to recycle that stuff. Just think how much aluminum, gold, and platinum is floating around up there.
Maybe this is where the global warming is coming from? Objects reflecting sunlight and the escaping heat back into the atmosphere.
Maybe this could also be tied to global warming ....Better get Al Gore on it
This "artistic" representation is such a completely fatuous creation that it is hardly worth the time to respond. However, in an effort to make an attempt to communicate with those that are less than informed, I believe that it should be pointed out that every pixel in the doctored photograph is roughly 23 MILES across. Since 99.9% of the space debis in question is less than 30 feet across, that means that if every piece of the nasty debris were to be lined up end to end, it would take up a space of less than three 10,000th of a pixel wide by 4 pixels long. This is such a non issue that it amazes me that someone took the time to make an issue out of it. Put another way, if all the debris were to be concentrated in the smallest space possible, then it would take up less than one pixle in the picture of the earth that is shown. I am not therefore saying that space debris is of no concern. However, the problem is so exaggerated by the auther of the original article that they have shed themselves of any creadibiliy as far as I am concerned. Thinking people may draw their own conclusions.
Doesn't it make you think...?? Makes one wonder how much recyclable garbage is under our oceans...?? Don't it...?? Isn't it about time for all of us to take more seriously about recycling and our throw-away attitude before it's way too late and all life as we know it on our earth is either deformed and/or totally extinct with our UNCARING attitude towards our beloved home planet...???
this picture is absolutely not rendered to a realistic scale. if there were objects that large floating around earths orbit, they would be visible to the naked eye. DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS. sounds like another whiney liderabl environmentalist trying to come up with reasons to not launch the space shuttle to cut down on rocket emissions. go back to saving the whales from the japanese.
This is stupid and irresponsible!! Not even close to realistic. More crazy, over-exaggerated propaganda. Don't even give this "rendition" a second thought.
And You Say People Arent Watching You...Ha!.
great, now life has somthing new to imitate
If we get enough satellites out there maybe it'll do the dissapearing ozone layer's job! BTW Its says computer generated artist's impression...
I wonder why it took so long for people to realize that all that junk was up there. I guess it took a picture for people to add it all up
this is an 'artist's impression". For it to really appear like this the satellites would have to be the size of cities. They aren't even the size of a bus. Great for dramatics, not great for understanding the issue.
I bet satelitte collision insurance is really expensive..lol
wow...reminiscent of the last scene in Wall - e
I hate to tell you this folks, but the artists rendering is an MASSIVE exaggeration of the clutter overhead. Does anyone here have any perception of magnitude? Think about it... 12,000 satellites? Big deal! A city of 12,000 people isn't even a city... its a town. Now if you spread that number of people over an area GREATER than the ENTIRE SURFACE OF THE EARTH, they would be all but invisible. Let’s get off the "make a difference on space pollution" bandwagon and try to use your brain for something other than poorly-informed activism.
All the people stupid enough to believe in global warming (oops, the average temp has dropped over the past 4 years.... I mean climate change)can now worry about a tiny number of small items floating around a massive space. All the space junk is equivelint to 12k water bottles floating around ALL of our oceans - WAKE UP AND GET A GRIP!
Two satallites collided. It's not the end of the world. If the area around earth was cluttered with that many satallites, we would see it when we looked at the sky. Don't believe everything fearmongers tell you. Yes Saundra is intimidated by my intellect.
I guess those are what the Bible refers to as "strange objects falling from the sky." And we put them there.
This image isn't anywhere CLOSE to accurate. I do think we put too much junk into space and that things could be designed better to not emit so much flotsam and jetsam, but space junk is simply the cost of hurling thousands of tons of hardware into orbit per year. Remember, we do this so that we can even be having this conversation or so people can watch dreck like Desperate Housewives and The Bachelor. If you want to point the finger of blame, please note that three fingers are pointing right backatcha. In point of fact, the scale is the problem with this drawing. The satellites and other bits are HUGE in comparison to what they would look like at that distance from Earth from an astronaut's perspective. Consider all the cars on the highways of the U.S. and elsewhere in the world. We're talking MILLIONS, even a BILLION. Now, distribute those vehicles evenly across the surface of the earth. Plenty of room between them still. Standing on top of one car, you wouldn't even be able to SEE another car. Now, pretend the Earth is a huge balloon and Al Gore comes and fills it with even more hot air and CO2 until it expands 300 to 600 miles outward in all directions. All of those cars would be even further apart from each other than before. Thousands of pieces of space junk over 10cm in size compared to A BILLION CARS. Stop believing everything MSNBC trots out in front of you.
12,000? That image looks like MUCH MORE than 12,000 space objects (this is more like an Artist's exaggeration). However, I 'do' agree; there is a lot of space junk that shouldn’t be in outpaces and, as human beings we should be ashamed of ourselves for that. Astronauts need to go on space missions strictly to get rid of space junk and clean up the mess they, or their colleagues, dumped, today!
Sate's have a natural decay rate expecially for the older ones without orbital boosters. They were meant to come crash back to Earth but not into each other. And we monitor more objects than anyone knows. Prior military!!!
So much for the OZONE layer! Look Ma, It's raining molting steel!
Rich, i keep looking for ManBearPig. ps do people actually believe thats what it looks like
Well, that's one less Russian satellite to worry about. Not that they are against the U.S. or anything in this war on terror, but if they ever decided to change their minds we now have an even bigger advantage! lol. Just a sour joke!Exactly, how many satellites orbit the earth anyway? Maybe, we should focus more on making a huge international space station that could focus more on new technologies and advancement in space travel and safety as well as act as a universal satellite for the whole planet and all its needs!
Having seen a dipiction of this type before, it just didn't look right then...and certainly doesn't here. Althogh dramatic and an interesting way to indicate the enormity of satellites and space debris it is inaccurate in scale. If taken as shown the comm satellites so clearly indicated would be approx 200 miles across. I would like to see this drawn to scale both in dimension of objects and distance from Earth.
If you would like to see NASA's 3-D interactive plot of over 900 satellites, check out J-Track 3D here: http://science.nasa.gov/Realtime/jtrack/3d/JTrack3D.html That same page has other related features, such J-PASS EMAIL which creates satellite prediction reports for up to 10 satellites and e-mails them directly to you. See these tools and others here: http://science.nasa.gov/realtime/
It´s real, i watched this at National Geographic Channel. even in space we have sweepings...our habits...
this reminds me of Walle, next the world is goin to fill up with trash
the earth is full on junk and if that (satelite junk) comes down it will hit houses and people. not so cool!
The depiction is misleading because it suggests that every piece of debris is the size of a city whereas some pieces are merley 10 cm bolts. The significant bad news is that most of the debris from this new collision will be in orbit for more than 200 years before it naturally decays.
TYPICAL YANKS OT BELIE4VE SUCH TRASH! VERY SMALL MINDED PEOPLE WITH VERY BIG IDEAS. TELL THEM THE WORLD WILL BLOW UP IN A WEEK AND THEY WILL BELIEVE YOU! SAD MUPPETS ALL LIVE IN AMERICA.
12,000 satellites 500 miles above the Earth? If that were people it would be a small town with a high school of 500 students. If you spread everyone out evenly you wouldnt ever see anyone else. But if 12,000 objects in the limitless space around earth is a problem then what do we do about the 6 billion+ on earth. Maybe we should look back down?...
It is obvious that this photo is not to scale (the size of the satellites to the size of the Earth); however, it makes a valid point that we are crowding "space". As if it wasn't bad enough that we have been destroying our planet, now we are expanding our destruction into our galaxy. *tisk tisk*
Those satellites aren't drawn to scale... by the looks of this each satellites is about the size of a small state or country. I appreciate the artist's stance, but I would like to warn that this is not what the earth actually looks like from space. It is an artist's rendition - artist's bias and interpretation included.
I couldn't find the ISS or the Hubble?
men is the most powerfull environmental distructors and the consequence of our action might be to wind up of world, that is an unussully event if it reaaly happen, let's wait and see , we are sailing in the same boat, tie your belt the journey is near future.
Seems ohly yesterday Frank Zappa had a popular tune... "Look here Brother, Who you jivin' with that cosmik debris?" from the album "Apostrophe" released March 22, 1974 Apropos n'est pa?
Wow. This artist paints with a huge brush... If the size ratio were anything like what this imaginary image suggests, then these sattelites would have to be larger in size than the city of Phoenix. The good news is that it may help to diffuse the sun's UV rays and help to counteract the hole in the ozone layer (note the sarcastic tone).
Just waiting till this picture is to scale...from the looks of it, a couple of sat.s could fill up the Med.sea...
Maybe this is what really caused global warming!
It’s not as if the human race will discontinue if cell phones, GPS systems, the Internet, and the whatnots became voided in our existence. That is to say, if any fellow idealists could join me in a small rant, then what voice we may stir could make the world a better place if one were to agree. The few Americans I know of, and those I painstakingly share my country with, are all the more likely to ignore this comment because our future (I use “our” loosely) is certainly no human’s priority. ps. (Whomever hates to read): Are satellites necessary?
Why do you think some one cares??? No one was watching Wall Street so why do you think someone is concern with outer space?????
The artists depiction is obviously an exaggeration of the skies, but it helps me to see how similar we are to viruses. We breed, we conquer, we consume and leave an aftermath of waste wherever we go. We should really just throw our junk into the sun or fly it into the big red storm on Jupiter.
Now I know why we don't have at many sunny days anymore.....What a mess!! Just think what anything out there in space thinks of this planet.
Anyone seen WALL-E lately? How far off are we from that reality? It may be closer than we all think...
This is a rendition. It is nowhere near scale. If you look at some of the individual satellites in the image, they'd have to be about the size of Rhode Island! C'mon people, lets use our minds. Yes, we probably have too many objects floating around up there, but it is nowhere near this bad.
I've got some oceanfront property in Arizona for sale that some of you might be interested in...........some of you really need a reality check
What a terrible illustration! 12,000+ satellites is so unbelievably insignificant when taking the earth's size into consideration, especially at that altitude. What about the cars on the road or the planes in the air? Each of which are doing more harm to our atmosphere. One collision and something needs to be done? Ridiculous!
Did you know half of these satellites aren't even being used!!!please turn off lights that aren't being used, turn off your tv when no one is in the room and walk to school and or work instead of driving:) These are small things that are easy to do please help!! :)
No worries...trash picks up on Tuesday 2012. Maybe the brains working on making a black hole can get with Hefty and get it ready for pickup.
This photos gives one a perspective of how much debris is in space, but the scale size of the debris is not to scale. These objects in this photo are larger than large transport ships on the ocean.
OBVIOUSLY THE ANTI NASA, ANTI FOSSEL FUELS, GLOBAL WARMING FAN PARADE FREQUENTS THIS SITE! IDIOTS.
people...people! whether this picture is not close to realistic, or 5 miles apart to each other or some say pretty slim to collide each other...lol. what can i say is, can we stop or at least prevent it to happen for the next generation..let's open our eye's dont we have enough pollution here on earth why we have to pollute our blue sky. the early is the better let's protect our environment.
OMG People never under estimate the power of stupid people in large groups! All the items in space in one stop would not be seen if this was to size...It would take about 10 times what is up there to fill your Super Walmart! STOP BEING SO DUMB PLEASE, OMG shazam! LMAO&ROF! I am sorry at time to say I am With you all...The sky is walling LOL.
Yeah, except when you compare these satellites to the land masses below them, even not taking parallax into account, you realize that in this so-called "artist's rendition," those satellites are about three or four hundred miles across from tip to tip. I realize it's artistic exaggeration, but this is just irresponsible. The artist is implying exactly what people are saying on here--that the technology we all use and rely on every day is somehow ruining our planet. Some of it might--this doesn't. At least, not directly. This sets off the ol' propaganda detector somethin' fierce.
Has anyone ever considered the possibility that these articles circulating the earth atmosphere could be something of a contributor to our changes in weather and/or effect the natural electical balances? Have we introduced "electrons" into orbit of our "neutron" we call Earth?
If the satellites were actually that large, then we would be able to see them in all of the pictures taken in space. For that reason, the satellites must have been exaggerated in size.
CFrom Dallas, That was Marvin the Martian on Loony Tunes He was always going on and on about the Iludium P36 Explosive Space Modulator lol!
LOL this is just like something a bleeding heart liberal would come up with. 12,000 pieces of stuff in space surrounding earth would not look anything like the picture. I am sure we will see this in Al Gores next presentation.
Umm....? Who's going to clean that up? Convicts on community service?
is there really object on earths core??
It's reality? Too terrible~
We humans only act when the situation threatens our life.
We mess all around us. Glad the other planets are inhabitable.
chut up people you make me sik if you really feel this stop usin tv phone and internhet
This reminds me of what I saw when I was watching the movie Wall-e. I thought that was an exaggeration! Remember when Wall-e was flying out of space outside of the spaceship to save Eva, the other rover, and the ship was flying through a bunch of junk around Earth? My goodness, I think our Earth is heading in that direction...I wonder if we really will have to live on a huge spacestation in outer space, because we will suffocate ourselves out of our own planet with junk!!!
no wonder theres a hole in our atmosphere? allowing the sun to slowly cook us. at least i can make phone call.
WOW!! Next this "artist" will probably be saying he/she had an out of body experience and saw this first-hand. Don't you think it odd that none of the photographs of Earth from deep space probes that have been launched from Earth have shown this debris to us? I do not dispute the existence of 12,000 or 15,000 or even 18,000 (depending to whom you want to listen) pieces of debris orbiting the earth, but please folks, let's keep it in perspective. This depiction is obviously not to scale.
This is absolutely SAD & an OURAGE!There is no DENYING that all of this stuff "JUNK" (PLUS with the other "JUNK" on earth) is simply destroying our planet. It does NOT take a scientist to figure out a solution to this HAVOC. It takes each and EVERYONE of US to stop taking our EARTH for granted (Government & Us as human beings). We are all GUILTY of this mess, and WE ALL CAN make a difference!
Hmmmm, maybe we could call it the Trashosphere?
Come on people, this is way off. 12,000 pieces of metal would hardly be visible, let alone look like that. Think about it. I am sure there is a lot of space junk, but nothing like this.
It's been said, but I'll say it again. The objects in this picture are much, much, much bigger than any real satellite. It's not realistic. It's just not.
if you dont like this stop using tvs, cellphones, phones and internet
those would have to be 12,000 huge satelites in order for them to take up that much space surrounding the earth. They would be so tiny in a real pic you would not be able to see them.
i bet you this is part of the new world order...these days we are so "high" in technology that our own government can mind control us..sounds crazy hu??? did u know in the bible it says such great knowledge is forbidden...but anyway...i do beleive this is part of the nwo...those arent debree...those are all satellalites..my bad...dont know how to spell...
Wow. Are you people really this stupid? This is an artists 'IMPRESSION', meaning this is not real. Granted the number of sattelites may be accurate, but it doesn't look like this. Come on, is the American general population really this dense? Stay in school!
we need to send up or build in space a gigantic magnet, orbit it a few times and head it toward the sun.
royhdublinga: Speak for yourself. It was a European who rendered this image...
Most communication satellites are in a geostationary orbit. For the Army that mean 22,300 miles. That's pretty far away, and not anywhere near where the space shuttle orbits. This is a dishonest piece of fabrication...
what are we doing about this? now 12,000 in 10 years how many thay are going to be?
This may sound silly. But, can a device be built to capture debris and bring it back down to earth. We need a vacuum cleaner in orbit to clean things up.
NO WAY that is anywhere near the view in space of the debris. Most of those pieces are as large or larger than the state of Florida. Get real, but do clean up your mess and quit making our planet look like your home.
THAT IS SCARY.WE ARE SURROUNDED BY JUNKS.WE NNED TO HELP SAVE THE EARTH PEOPLE.WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO OUR KIDS,KIDS???
Im wondering where this artist was sitting when he set up easel. Bet anything he was pretty close to the distance from earth that he/she displays. I didnt know you could buy drugs that good anymore.
Ya think maybe that about 100 of us can submit a contract to go out there and clean up the mess and get a humungus loan for the necessary ship? I wonder what a person would pay for scrap from space!!! hmmmmmm
Smoking is a bad habit regardless of where you are.So please toss your butts in a recepticle.
LMAO! Are you kidding me? The painting "depicts an approximation of 12,000 objects" Do you realize how miniscule of a number that is compared to how big the earth is and how much space is surrounding it? Honestly, unless each one of those objects is the size of Maine, I think it's safe to say there's no need to get all flustered and hippie like, just take a deep breath, go hug a tree, pound on a djembe and light some incense because Showtime has a new episode of The L Word coming on.
this is could be very fatal with all these satellites since we polluted the earth now its spaces turn now.
I didn't know each peice of debris is the size of Maryland.
im feeling this is a scam
its amazing how so many people can read only segments of a line rather than the entire sentence, IMPRESSION OF.. sheesh
Okay people its a work of art, he is an artist... I would love to see the comments if only Dali had had his rendition of this
Ok People lets make a second MilkiWay
Here on Earth you get fined for tossing chewing gum on the floor. Who pays for littering space?
This isn't a real picture. Don't get so worked up. If you read the fine print it says, "A computer-generated artist's impression..." Although at the rate we're poluting the earth, this might not be so unrealistic in a few years.
That satellite in the bottom left corner would have to be the size of three states to look that big! Even the smallest dot would be about half the size of Rhode Island!! What third grader would even buy that this is what Earth looks like from outer space? I like that comment from the "Ass. Multimedia Editor" that calls this a "photo illustration" when the description below the pic says "artist's impression". Shrink each of these dots to less than a 50th of the scale that's represented here and you'll have a slightly more accurate view of reality. Granted, that's still a lot of satellites and leftover crap from space missions, but the cloud isn't near this dense, yet...
WHAT EVER IT IS-HUMANS HAVE TO BE AREADY TO PROTECCT THE ARTH FROM ANY SUBJECCTS OBJECCTS OR ASTEROIDS OR ANY METEORS-COVERED OR UNCOVERED-NO INTELEGENT CIVILISATION CANE GET TROUBLE WITH HUMANS AND NO HUMANS CANE GET TROUBLE WITH THE INTELEGENT CIVILISATIONS-NO ONE CANT GO AGEANS THE GOD IF THERE IS THE TROUBLE IN ARTH AND COUSE TROUBLE IN SPACE IT HAVE TO BE FIXED IF THERE IS TROUBLE IN SPACE AND COUSE TROUBLE IN ARTH IT HAVE TO BE FIXED.--BUY BUY.
That's the dumbest thing I've ever seen. It made me laugh out loud. What a ridiculous impression.
haha, wake up. A lot of this "garbage" is what makes it possible for you to use your cellphone and what not. And again, this isn't to scale in the slightest.
Thats the most scary thing I have ever seen.Ha!Just immagine the devastation if through some crazy gravitational disaster all that came plumiting back to our planet!
Artist Rendition Need More Be Said. the point is that we as a inhabitant of this one of a kind planet should be alot more mindful and put as much effort in cleaning up after we have performed a mission or a orbitor that has expired. i am sure that if the consequences were immediate or life threating we would devise a plan to correct the situation, but we just pass the problems off to the next generations and at a doubled or even tripled cost. if its not broke dont fix it and the artists rendition is all to accurate. we are our own worst enemy
it reminds me of the scene in a movie, i cant remember if it was futerama or it could have even been Wall-e where the space ship exits earths orbit and knocks a hole through the giant blanket of satalites.
A cure for global warming - perfect! Put enough junk in space creates a space blanket!
I'M SUPRISED A U.F.O. HASN'T HIT ANY OF THEM YET.LMAO. Sightings, humans are such funny people.
is any of that junk worth anything? why hasn;t some enterprising country build a ship to go cosmic dumpster diving?
wow you can barely see OUR Earth.....so sad :O( but we ask for hd or digital tv and elec. stuff and cell phones.........etc,,,,idk looks sooo different.
hahaha. Seems like Wall-E all over again xD Crazy stuff...
instead of this big mess couldnt all the ppl tht make satellites come together to make a couple of stellites for everythign the need instead of every country having their own 200 satellites like come on seriosly and just by show this to ppl its not like there gona care its the same old thing we see every day something tell us about wats happening around us not like ppl ever care like wat r ppl supose to do about this they cant go up to space and clean up the satellites theres nothing tht we can do about this tht i know of
they should have start thinking how to clean up all the mess before those things fall into their heads!!
WHAT A MESS
It is amazing how many people are drawn to comment, and really nothing is said. Perhaps people who comment on art are intrinsically stupid.
Yesterday, we went to the beach and while I am staring in the sky, I saw something black, like a point in the sky. I saw it at about 10 minutes then it disappeared. How strange it is, thinking something extraordinary then I read your article. What a relief, something man made again. This happened in Nasugbu, Batangas Philippines
I think this rendering is great! I wonder what else in this vast universe of ours or in other galaxies what our magnetic field of debris can attract and will this pull us off orbit?
Wow we really screwed up our planet! In other words we are all screwed!
WTF? Are you kidding me? Do you pencil necks really believe that this is accrurate? Oh wait, you are propbably the same homers that think change is really coming our way with the new elect. A picture is worth a thousand word, but a mind is priceless. Try putting all the debris to scale with the land in the background. Fruit cakes.
Wait...how is that only 12,000? Looks more like 12,000,000+
12,000,000 satellites would not look this crowded. people are will believe anything. Really if this were really true we'd not be able to see the moon
Surface Area of Earth: 510,072,000 km(2) 510072000 / 12 000 = 42,506 square kilometers for each piece of debris. Plus, most of that debris is minuscule. Come on, people, if it was as bad as it looks wouldn't you be hearing of satellite collisions every day?
Bamanurse...yeah I live out in the country and LOVE to watch satellites in the night sky with my kids. It's awesome. I wonder if anyone else likes to do this?
With this artist rendition, the satellites would have to be the size of Massachusetts. Last time I checked, the shuttles don't take up payloads that size.
Talking about Global Warming! Heavy metals are conductors of heat.. could it be that these 12,000 pieces are the culprits? Where is Mission Clean-up the Earths atmopsphere?
Seems somebody used a bit too much artistic license...each of those chunks would be the surface area of california at that radius from the core (or pretty close). Way to go. I guess unseeable spots just wouldn't make a good picture.
nice realistic depiction NOT. some basic maths. approximate surface area is 200 million Square miles at around 200 miles from earth. If by some pure chance each satelite was at the same altitude (which they aren't) then each sat would have over 16000 square miles of space to move around in. not sure about anyone one else but that is hardly congested.
The environmental movement has pounded us non-stop since I can remember. Sensationalism sells. Reading these comments confirms which of us has swallowed the bait along with the hook! We all know how critical it is to protect our environment and resources but get real ....
Come now folks. The items shown in the image are not to scale. It's an artist's rendition to give an impression of how much junk is up there. It's like when looking at a map. The star that signifies the capital of a country may take up a lot of space on the map, but it's not the actual size of the capital city in scale. It's a representation to give a general impression of location, not a to scale representation. Same thing is going on here.
Talk about Global Warming! Heavy Metals are great conductors of heat. Could it be... they are culprits as well? Where is the Clean Up Crew?
This arist's rendition is hardly accurate. Look at the size of the pieces. Each satellite would be the size of Philadelphia if they were really that large. Such is not the case. Don't let this rendering fool you into an alarmist reaction.
There are an average of 4000 to 6000 planes in the air over america during the day. There are far more airplanes in the sky around the world then there are objects in space. If you were to move from one orbiting object to another at the same speed as a jet it would take hours.
This is great. It's like a big welcome billboard to the universe. "Welcome to Earth - The Trash Planet, Come on in we Have Lots More Where This Came From".
Is this really of any surprise to anyone? We have been contaminating this planet for years. As for conspiracy theory with regards to this matter,..Concerns arent usually recognized until things have already gotten out of control. Those that dont recognize the problem probably throw their trash into the streets. This matter is highly indicative as to our limitations. We are a self destructive creature, and we will probably be extinct before our own sun.
Why dont we create huge garbage shuttles to pick up the debris like we have Garbage trucks here on Earth. Then They can bill them for it.
Puppets. THINK ABOUT CONCEPT YOU..people
marvelous but scared to our environment.
This is the worlds first line of defence against the Marshan Attack. NASA figure's there armada can't make it through unscathed.
Pretty sure that he just stole this picture idea from the movie WALL-E...
It’s amazing, and perhaps a bit frightening, that there are people who are buying into this “Artists Rendering” and think it is a realistic view of our planet. These people are allowed to vote, operate heavy machinery, own firearms, and *shudder* breed. “Ohmigosh! Look at what someone made on the computer! We’re destroying the UNIVERSE!” - I don’t know whether to laugh or cry….
12,000 are we sure??? 1,200 i have heard. what is the truth and once again what is an exageration
What a stupid painting, it gives the viewer no idea what 12000 pieces of space junk look like. Dumb Treehugger trying to give everyone a warped perception of reality. If the sky was that poluted we wouldn't have to worry about Al Gore's Fake Global warming. It would be reflecting most of the sunlight away. THATS IT! we can stop Global Warming by poluting space... wait didnt I just hear the Ice caps are growing again? I knew Al was full of it. The Sky is falling!
did the artist copy the beginning of the wall-e movie.
A computer generated artist rendition? I think it's very overly exaggerated. How is it the shuttle and space station never have any interference from this space "debris"? This depiction is completely unrealistic!
O come on, do you people really think that this is a realistic rendition ?? Take 12,000 vehicles twice the size of a semi (ok, maybe some are bigger), and spread them around the earth at a distance from the surface of 60,000 feet. Now do you see how rediculous this is ?? If not, go back to sleep...
O come on, do you people really think that this is a realistic rendition ?? Take 12,000 vehicles twice the size of a semi (ok, maybe some are bigger), and spread them around the earth at a distance from the surface of at least 60,000 feet. Umm quite ridiculous if u ask, someone should send a janitor up there for some cleaning
What a load of rubbish this is. How about an actual photo taken from perhaps a shuttle or space station. If there were that much debris in this rather exaggerated picture, I'm sure we would see alot of it in a photo. Ridiculous.
Ok nice "computer-generated artist's impression", but please keep in mind the image you are looking at is not to scale. If this were an actual photo with the camera at the same distance from the earth the 12,000 objects in orbit around the Earth would not be visible to the naked eye, or the camera. Most people will see this "computer-generated artist's impression" and say, "Oh my! That’s terrible, we're polluting outer space." But I beg you to look again and think, when was the last time we put a satellite into orbit the size of half of ITALY? Thanks for playing! Oh and one more note, I like how the newest posts are at the bottom of the page where no one will read them. Oh and how some one a few post before me wrote about what consenting adults do in private which has nothing to do with this blog. I thought that was against the rules ...? hmmmmmm
looks like a fake picture
Zoom in on the satellite at the toe tip of the Saudi Arabian boot. It's length with respect to the background is 383 kilometers. That's about the same as the length of the country I live in. It's about 380 kilometers from Taipei to Kaohsiung, Taiwan. If the whole "rendering" were to scale, the satellites and other debris would be small dots. The density might be right, but the size of the objects is obviously exagerated.
From looking at the photo illustration of 12,000 objects. I was amazed about the size of the satellites. They are as large as a city if they were scaled to the picture of earth. Say the size of a satellite is the size of a mid-size truck. Scatter these 12,000 trucks at difference places on earth. One can hardly spotted them. Let alone in space. It is true that we should be concerned about our increasingly many space objects around our near earth orbit. However, I believe up there (in the lower space orbit) can easily handle another 12,000 objects.
Has no one noticed the relative size of these 'objects'? Take a second look and consider the land masses behind them. Awfully scary looking indeed.......if you believe that satellites the size of Chicago are in orbit around the Earth.
scary ... but it may help keeping the earth cooler by shading the planet ... ... and by the time our kid ask what is that black dots in the sky ... we might just say ... its our excess rubbish ...
REALLY,IT IS 18,000 PIECES BEFORE BUT NOW WHO KNOWS HOW MANY.THIS IS TOO MUCH TO AVOID MORE COLLISIONS.A REAL POSIBILITY TO DISRUPT OR DESTROY THINGS SOCIETY HAS COME TO RELY ON.I LIKE COMEDY CENTRAL,MY PHONE,BANKING AND IF MORE TRASH HITS THINGS WE RELY ON IT WILL LITTERALY LAST FOR EVER.OUR ECONOMY IS ALREADY SPACE TRASH!THE WORLD CANT AFFORD PIECES OF SOMETHING WE CANT FIX OR CLEAN UP!HOW ABOUT AN ACURATE DISCRIPTION OF SOMETHING SO REVELENT.WE DONT NEED AN ARTIST ON ACID, WHO IS HIGHER.
This picture is a joke...The scale of the satellites is increased by about 1000 times. Europeans would love for you to believe that the earth is a big blue ball floating in the middle of a trashcan it goes right along with their ideology of "Help us world government...your our only hope!"
It is always a chance for something to crash to earth from space. Most burn up on entery. You maybe amazed about what actually does happen. In order for things crashing from space to change the earth climate will have to be pretty big and very powerful. Global warming is years of polution and destruction of rainforest among other things. Combination of variest things. The illistration here is quite an interesting art piece. Really can get you thinking. Vast void of space can be interesting. When you look at a star do you wonder what it is? Nebula, a planet, astoriod. Stand outside watching a meteor storm as it hits the atmostfere? Space and earth holds many wonders. Many things can occur we do not even think twice about it. I find it fasinating. What is beyond our world makes us like a spec in this vast space.
probably ufos. dont think 2 satellites wud create that much junk of that size depicted.
I blame it on the ozone!
this is amazing. some of the satellites look like they are 3 to 4 hundred miles in diameter. what is going to happen when they fall to earth. i just bought a schmidt cassagrain telescope. i will not even be able to view simple m catalog objects. i am pissed.
Seriously Folks. Have you heard of "artistic license". Of course the picture is ridiculous. It's supposed to be. Point of fact is, 12,000 satellites and pieces of junk orbiting the earth is ridiculous. Could that have been the statement? It takes all kinds. And, I don't think 18,0000+ is a number. Or maybe it's metric? Opinions are spawn of ignorence, everyone is entitled to knowledge.
holy moly
You would think I would get better cell phone reception in my own home with all of that! Its a little hard to believe that it actually looks anything like that though, but I guess thats why we dont see it all over the news, because its not an actual "to size" picture!
i dont know much aboutt this kind of thing but... what goes up, must come down. they have to fall somewhere, lets just hope its not in a populated area. i do believe it is exaggarated also.
I only have one question... How do we get rid of that stuff? (and yes.. the photo is awesome)
I have to agree with KeonfromMaryland. It is such an over dramitization that it is quite dumb. You figure that most of the major cities in America have more than 12,000 houses in them are the cramped, yes but it is a city and we are talking about the whole world. Just remember that most debree would burn up on entree. 70% of the world is covered in water, you have a better chance winning the lottery then getting hit by something we put up there.
cool
Yeah right!!! To look like that... Of course every piece measures up to 100 to 200 miles... Delusional...
I agree with KeonfromMaryland If satellites were that large we could see them with the naked eye. Look at the size of them in relationship to land. Think about it.
Clearly this is an artists rendition to make us aware of how much debris is floating around out there, but just to give a little perspective... if these 12,000 objects averaged one cubic yard in volume - then taken all together this space "junk" would cover a New York City block to a depth of about 1.2 feet. If the odjects came in at an average of 1000 cubic feet (a 10x10x10 cube) they would take up approximately the same volume as a 4 storey building covering the this same city block. Admittedly it's a lot of trash - but at several hundred miles above the earth's surface it is still the equivalent of a very squat skyscraper.
and why cant i get cell sevice?????
This mess could have caused terrible human catastrophe, but remember that the earth, the other planet and all that is in,belong to God.Psalms 24:1-3
Want to see the location of all the stuff that is orbiting Earth? NASA has a 3D interactive plot of over 900 satellites called J-Track 3D: http://science.nasa.gov/Realtime/jtrack/3d/JTrack3D.html Other interesting tools from NASA: http://science.nasa.gov/realtime/
Hey, we've done a great job trashing earth, looks like we're expanding our horizons! Realistic or not it's a wake-up call....nows the time to address our impact. We've hit the snooze button on mother earth for years and look where it's got us.
Oh, goodness. I can't believe it. The Imperial Fleet is orbiting Earth. Darth Vader approaches. Soon the Death Star will blows us up. Oh, goodness. That picture is actually what it might possibly look like if the Emperor(Star Wars) sent thousands of Eclipse-class Star Destroyers to Earth. Each Eclipse is at least 10 times larger than any ship seen in the movies (Death Star excepted). People who still do not have the patience/intelligence to read the other comments...Each of those sattelites is blown up probably several thousand times. Also, people who attack the artist: the purpose of the picture is probably not to illustrate a problem. Trust environmentalists to draw that conclusion. No, the intent was probably just to illustrate just how many sattelites we have in space. If you disagree, that's cool. And ladies who didn't read AP...Happy Belated Valentine's Day!
This is not meant to be a flame post, but seriously many of these comments have the reality button in the off position. First off the picture is ridiculous in scale. NORAD does track all the objects with remarkable accuracy, but sometimes you just can't do anything about it and you just have to sit and watch. To the "environmentalist" who thing we are polluting the planet with sattelites,,, are you serious? Unless you are Amish satellites are a very needed technology. Trust me these aren't put up by spammers, they are too expensive to go up there except for legitimate purposes. When is the last time you had to go into space? Yeah, I don't think the satellites are harming you, but when you pay at the pump you can be happy they are there. (side note: common cell phones don't use satellites so that isn't the problem in east texas) (for Mary's 15 Feb post) Also every launch is publicly announced because it has to be. The average media outlet doesn't carry the story because most people don't care. They have to be announced so as to not surprise anybody into thinking it is a nuclear attack,, seriously it is an international treaty. A final note again to the "environmentalists",, once something gets into space it is very difficult to do anything with it due to fuel constraints. The soviet part of this was a dead hulk and we don't have garbage men in space so dead stuff tends to stay there. As for the iridium bird this is just speculation, but it has limited fuel as well so pushing itself to avoid the soviet hulk might have put it into a problem orbit if it didn't have the fuel to get back. There was likely a probabily formula for both situations and they went with a best guess. The alternative might have seemed worse and the impact that occurred might have seemed less likely.
So That's why I can't get rid of that low freaky humming noise inside my head!! Earplugs don't help. Thanks...first the whales, then the bees and now us humans. Sleepless nights.
Silly people, the satellites are to scale and perfectly accurate but the earth was scaled down to 1/32nd it's actual size. Can you tell? :)
The idea of this photo is a rip off from the movie Wall-E. Granted the artist made his own picture, but the one in the movie looks a lot better in my opinion. Regardless, this is a ridiculous notion to impose on the public that there are too many objects in space around our planet. The average satellite isn't much larger than a mid-sized car. If you were to put them all together, you wouldn't even have enough to cover the island of Hawaii. In addition, there are currently less than 6000 man made obects orbiting our planet, not 12,000. As many people have stated in earlier posts, nearly all of the debris will burn up in the atmosphere. So, I would hold off on getting that satellite collision insurance.
No wonder aliens dont visit here as much as they use to,[they afraid they will have to clean it up,and someone should have to clean this mess up!]! HAVE A NICE DAY!
this drawing is not to scale. satelites are much smaller in relation to the earth, at this magnification they wouldn't be visible due to their size. it would take billions of satelites to fill earth's orbit like that, not thousands.
What’s the next complaint, orbital debris is contributing to "global warming?" The amount of space this stuff consumes is immeasurable against the totality of the Universe. Fortunately for the sake of the Universe, we (the Human Race) and our material and Non-material junk are confined to only this planet. Have a nice day
I would agree with bill, this rendering is inaccurate. 12,000 objects will not cover the earth as in this image, I beleive this is just another adjenda by the mainstream AP to extend their influence beyond global warming. Soon you'll be hearing a push to "clean" up space. People can be so ignorant sometimes
Eveyone who helped with Marvin The Martian.......THANK YOU!!!!! I could NOT remember the cartoon name. When I looked at the # of comments since last Friday, I have to apologize. Sorry, too many to catch up on for a Monday. Lots to do at work. I only got to 2.13.9 and just scrolled down to say THANK YOU for everyone that was helping me remember the cartoon charactor's name! Lots of new people too!
Too much of everything, as always ...
so thats where my baloon went
It is not surprising at all that the two satellites collided with all that clutter. The ball of fire through Texas this morning was probably some after effect of the collision with probably more to come. If they are able to put satellites in space, they should be able to remove the junk or need to use their minds to figure out a way. Next, when the landfills get full and run out of room for trash and the ocean gets full of trash and all the fish die, they will orbit all the trash in space. Cell phones, internet, etc. are all good, but before they trashed space, they should have asked the world and told them the risks of space trash, debris falling back to Earth, etc. and would the internet, etc. be worth it. Life went on before all those gadgets. Might as well make use of the gadgets while we can.
ok, third try........ while the artist's rendition is exagerated, space trash IS a reality. i wonder how many additional pieces are added to the trash tracking due to that last collision. anywho.....all companies from all countries that send 'stuff' up there should be required to contribute to a mutual fund, based on what they sent up, to figure out how to clean up the trash and then get 'er done.
Guiness WR for MSN Photoblog posts. Soon there will be as many posts as there are pieces of space junk in the sky. Happy Reading!
Down Under. I just read that two nuclear submarines collided in the ocean. This makes me wonder how much trash and traffic is down under the sea. I can see why Marvin is angry.
When I saw the 409 comments, It gave me pause. Until I realized that is must be an artist's exaggeration as it is the same comment(s) repeated over and over again.
Ok i must say that it is amazing that this one image has generated atleast six times as many comments as usual....I have read many of these and never commented but i enjoy reading everyone elses you make me laugh! just curious where is NEO on this one?
Dang, who opened the gates? This image must have been featured on the MSN homepage, to warrant so many comments.
EvilLin-NEO thinks this picture is doofy and agrees with Krista about the same things being said over and over again.
Can't they appoint a special team to collect all that mess? They may think that it's harmless...just floating around in space for years to come, but it can actually harm our planet in the long run. So I wonder if Nasa, or whoever, could create a special section to clean up our galaxy. They can sure try.
Krista...Yeah, I saw nothing really new for comments here...Pretty much the same two statements, over and over again, with a couple of Doomsday quacks and a Hatemonger thrown in. BTW...The light show over East Texas was a meteorite about the size of a pick-up truck...Lighten up people, this pic just added new meaning to the words...Anal Retentive.
>>>DeBrino... Thanks for the info on NASA's web site showing the location of satellites, Hubbell, etc. Is too cool.
506 comments???? What is up??? This is a digital representation of a papperazzo's dream
Seriously....over 500 comments on this photo?? What the heck is going on????
I am loving the word 'doofy'. Is there a new picture in our near future?
Wow, I can see Russia from MY house, too!
My math is a bit rusty, but I tried to come up with an alternative example of the satellites orbiting the earth: Suppose 20,000 party balloons floating all around the world from ground level up to 3,000 feet high. If anyone wants to calculate the exact volume/satellite ratio to prove how bad my math is, go for it. LOL
WOW!!! One picture generated this many comments?!!!! SAD!! All repeats too!!! Twit, Krista, NEOSHO, Kay, Ken I couldn't agree more. AP - I heard the same thing last night. It was a meteorite. New picture (please?)
Good to know I haven't missed anything...really.....well...save the blogship (fellowship). Mot of you guys are enlightening and funny.
when i logged on the comment count was 695, mine is 696... heavens to mergatroid!! oooooh, who was comment 666, the dooms day one?? (said sarcastically by the way) but still, holy crap all these comments over a (rather stupid) redition of the planet!
i meant rendition of the planet! now i'm # 697 too!!
GOOD LORD! This must be a record number of comments! So, does this make me #699? I wanna be #700... whaaaaaaa...
I'll try for # 700. Of course, with my luck, I have my doubts that it'll successfully get posted! lol!
Who left the door open? and who let all these knuckleheads in?? Usually, we have to have a knock-down drag-out insults-flyin' fight between 2 or 10 people before we get this much stupidity. It's gotta be a record. Rampant stupidity by a record number of dumb people. Yay!
you people will buy anything!thats why the liberal media loves you idiots so much!
Mickey did it!! Yay! A regular got 700!! I'm so proud of you. Can we hit 800 for a photo-shopped picture that exaggerates the imagination and results in stupidity on a scale never before seen? Can we? I believe deep in my heart that there are more than enough boneheads out there with ridiculous comments a'plenty, and 800 is not unreachable because of their efforts.
Who's the "bonehead" who put the exclamation marks all..... the....... way....... across....... the........ page!!!!!
Someone above made the statement that it's amazing the Space Shuttle hasn't collided with one of these objects..... well, are we on earth really sure that the shuttle disintegrated because of a heat tile being knocked off at take-off? Are you sure?
Ok, 'fess up, who actually counted these posts? And how many times did you start over?
Yes, Yes, I know, the number of comments is posted at the top, but are you sure? Can we trust the count? After all, they are not letting MickeyMass post!!! Can we really trust such deviousness???? And how many more stupid comments can we make to see if we can get to 800 posts?
SL- where did you see the exclamation marks across the page? I tried to find it but the blog is too long and my eyes began to cross!
hey! to 800, we can do it! (fist in the air, just like the japanese students a few pics back)
ok, canadaEh, i volunteer you to count!
NeW PiCtUrE; nEw pIcTuRe; NEW PICTURE; new picture......PLEASE!!!!
Pretty amazing that in the mere 51 years since Sputnik it has come to this. Check out the space debris accumulation video at the ESA: http://www.esa.int/esaCP/SEMHDJXJD1E_FeatureWeek_0.html
Dismayed that after all the comments no one has posted any facts. I read this blog frequently, but haven't written until now since someone with reason usually posts some FACTS. The following quote from 'http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/launches/spacejunk-1_824.html' says it better than any attempt at explaining kintetics: 'The average relative velocity for impacts is 10 km per second, or 21,600 miles per hour. At that speed, specks of paint have caused craters in the space shuttle's windows. NASA often replaces the windows because of the cumulative damage of micro-debris and micrometeoroids.' Too bad this probably won't get posted. Even if it does, no one will notice... I can yell louder than you so that makes me right.
Okay anji... it's #268, give or take one or two! Phewwww..... Not to worry, MinFla... I noticed!
MinFla - great post, facts are always good to know, though rarely welcomed unless they support our own personal viewpoint, yes? Anyway, please post more often!
If noone can hear you scream in outer space, did the collision make a sound? (let's march to #800!)
Wow! That's a lot of space junk! It's hard to believe.
bump
It's an interesting interpretation, but is obviously not to scale. Realistically each satellite would be smaller than one pixel I'm sure.
The Science Channel is having a program on this issue - and even used this rendition in its advert. lol, NEO!
Using an artists rendition to show these objects is the only way to see them at all. If even the largest object were in the picture 'true to scale', it wouldn't even light a single pixel on your display. Personally, I would rather have them the size of tractor trailers since they would be much easier to track with exsisting devises and then easier to 'side step' if they presented possible danger. The shuttles windows are over 2 inches (in layers) thick of bulletproof silica glass, which means the astronauts suits probably would be no better than tissue paper in trying to stop 'a fleck of paint', much less in size than what you see in the rendition. CM-at 21,600 miles per hour, would you have a CHANCE to scream? Thanks SouthernLady and canadaEh for noticing! BTW- at 40 miles out in the Gulf, you can still SEE the flame from the boosters in the daylight!
This is interesting. I always assumed that the satellites are congregated equatorially. They seem to be grouped longitudinally . Hmm, interesting.
So... that's where my balloons went!
not a photo. Propaganda, yes. hardly worth it. Didnt know objects were that large.
