This one leaves me pretty much speechless. I'm thankful I don't live in an area of TX that will be affected. I hope that everybody that does gets to a safe location.

Bush, you have got some explaining to do!!!
If this image didn't move folks to evacuate, I don't know what would! I read that authorities in Galveston told those who refused to evacuate to just write their name and social on their arm to identify their bodies. God help those foolish people. Jordan, they may try to blame it on him, but secretly Gore is saying "You know, I invented the hurricane"
"Our differences, our problems from out there there's not much trace. Our friendships they can place while looking at the face of the Big Blue Marble in space."
This picture is absolutely terrifying. It has riveted me for the entire day; I keep coming back to it again and again. God help the people in Galveston tonight. PS If conditions are so bad (and this proves without a doubt that they are), how come the media doesn't get the hell off the air???
Wow, There are powerful nations in this world, People that think that we are safe in this world, let’s not forget that we are nothing against God's power. God bless us from his justice, for all bad things we do.
Whether you are religeous or not...It's time to pray for these folks.
I never really thought about how big these guys are!!! My mind is about blown! diecinuever dias.
MTfromLa You and I are diametrically opposed, but I think you are hilarious. I enjoyed the Gore remark.
Planetary, is all The Phrog can say, it's like Jupiter. This one really gets the message across that we live on a planet, and must learn to coexist within the planets ecosystem, or be prepared for the outcome when regulation gives way. Planet Earth is blue and there's something we can do.......
Ralph
This looks aweful. I have always lived in the middle east and now am in London. I have'nt ever experienced a hurricane or even a major storm. I am thankful for that. I hope America is doing everything for the sufferers.
This is just another effect from global warming, i swear. The hurricanes just keep coming, one after another, but our world is ruled by ignorant fools.
madness... looks like a tidal wave is the sky god help everyone
Having been through Ivan I can understand how they must feel, terrified. God bless them all!
MN, it's natural weather patterns, not some supernatural being. My 5th grader learned that in school last year. You know, intelligence gets you much further than superstition.
NancyChase... because people love drama and the media brings it to us. Our blog friends in Texas and Louisiana... please check in once this has passed so we'll know you all are okay! I can't say this enough... my prayers and thoughts are with and for you.
Even in such destruction can you see such beauty. It shows the ripple affect it will with all that are involved. But the amazing brightness in the clouds is just as stunning.
Neosho-Ralph, very funny. I don't think we've had a Hurricane Ralph, or have we? I believer Robert Hunter wrote those lines of yours for The Grateful Dead some years back, nice choice of lyric.
Gore warned us this would happen.
Jordan what could you possibly be thinking. Nobody Republican or Democrat is capable of affecting the weather. It comes in cycles there have been plenty of years with numerous and severe hurricanes way before your time or mine. Please don't believe everything you here or see on the news without researching it for yourself. When people spout other peoples views they just show their complete stupidity.
A friend of my teenager's who she went to school with is down here after evacuating Houston. She is a cancer patient and wanted to visit for possibly the last time before returning to therapy.
Michael-I've searched for quite a while and can't find who is the writer of those lines. They are lines from the theme song for a t.v. show, late 70s early 80s, called THE BIG BLUE MARBLE. It was a neat show. Anyone else remember it? I'd bet money Bay remembers it.
Thank you Ed... I think. We are hundreds of miles away, but are getting winds 50-60 mph, and have been for hours. Very little rain though. That will come later tonight into tomorrow.
uhhh.. can i ask HOW THIS IS BUSH'S FAULT AT ALL?? can we please stop finding ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING to blame on him when its mother nature. world is not going to be around forever folks
Greg and Katalina...Jordan (if it really was him) was being facetious. Adjective: 1.not meant to be taken seriously or literally: a facetious remark. 2. amusing; humorous. 3. lacking serious intent; concerned with something nonessential, amusing, or frivolous: With just a hint of irony. So was MT. Mostly. Some of us get the joke. Everyone else, sit down before you hurt yourself.
Greg and Katalina, It was a joke! Lighten up. We all know it's Al Gore's fault, anyway.
Elizabeth, "This is just another effect from global warming, i swear. The hurricanes just keep coming, one after another, but our world is ruled by ignorant fools." Maybe you should look a little closer to home before you call others fools. Earth is not like the watch on your arm. It's not programmed to do the exact same thing every day. There are periods of adverse weather and periods of relative calm. The entire collective intelligence of our race wouldn't be enough to determine if this storm is caused by the Theory of Global Warming. Yes it is just a theory. Our weather goes through trends and so does the temperatures. Earth has been on a warming trend since well before the Industrial Age. Nobody knows what the effects of burning fossil fuels has on our weather and environment. We could be saving our butts by polluting so much, nobody knows. Our weather is influenced by so many factors it would make your head spin, from solar radiation to a single blade of grass. We change the weather and our environment simply by breathing. I seriously doubt we have even built a computer powerful enough to process all the variables to determine whether the Theory of Global Warming is true or to even accurately predict the weather. Even if the computer did exist mankind doesn't have enough information on those variables to correctly program such a computer. Many people would say to just open your eyes if you don't believe in Global Warming. Well first of all most people don't even understand what it is. Second, the planet has been around for over 4 billion years and we have been here for less than a blink of the eye of that so how would you even know? Let me guess, because you hear about it everywhere? Which bring us to #3, most people are closed-minded and believe almost anything they hear. Global Warming is an absolutely huge business. The media wants you to believe in it because it sells. Environmental groups want you to believe in it because it makes them rich. Sure some of them may actually care about the environment but they try to achieve their goals by giving incorrect information to an uneducated audience. I think we should cut our pollution as much as we possibly can until we can understand our world but I wouldn't resort to such a low level as using scare tactics. It's called terrorism. Anyway, I hope that people stop believing everything they here. Don't give out your opinion as a statement of fact without doing the research or else you only make yourself look like a fool.
I love earth shots taken from space.
Give it up, Roz. Life will still go on even if you have to trade in your 20 mpg Ford truck.
If CO2 is the problem they why don't we all just hold our breath for a couple of days? I figure this way we can take care of TWO (maybe three) problems at once. We can reduce CO2 emisisons, stop fogging up the windows, AND (if mom sees us) we can get our way! Either that or we can just stop overpopulating the earth.
MastermindBerwick, Good one
"The day after Tommorow" anyone?
How come 'they' keep looking for water or sources of water way out in the galaxy an beyond when seems all evidence points to this place as the water source of the same? Is putting that exploration dollar to cleaning up or putting salt water into good water a little bit too much? We know there are hurricane guys who fly into these monstors to do a job; I say put some dollars into that so they can do their job! Sound familiar?
Roz - You are a breath of fresh air to all us logical thinkers.
Krista: You still make me smile after all these years. LOL
This is terrifying. My brother lives in New orleans; he was hit by many hurricanes including Katrina, Gustav and now Ike. He has lost his home more than once; as has many others. I am praying that he and others get out of there before another hurricane takes their homes "again", and god forbid; their lives. Please donate to the Red Cross to help all those in need.
My pleasure Sparks.
With all the arguments on global warming, I'd like to recommend the novel "State of Fear" by Michael Crichton. It's fiction, but he researches his science so well that there is a lot of information on weather and the climate in that book.
Greg-It was a joke at democrats. Krista-Thank you for clarifying...it was me. MT-Hilarious
Simply amazing. I've never seen a hurricane viewed as depicted in this photo. Not only is the subject one that strikes awe, but the photo quality itself is phenomenal. The contrast of the dark upper third against the blue water and white clouds is awesome.
Krista - hahahahaha. lmao ;o) Arletta - belief in a Creator doesn't make someone stupid, it just gives them hope during their short time here on earth. Only childish people put other people down for their beliefs. Grow up. Roz - right on. When someone asks me if I believe in global warming, I say 'hell yes'. Our planets been warming up ever since the last ice age. The fact that every other planet in our solar system is having global warming at the same time we are should give everyone a clue to the true nature of the problem (it's the sun). Do our carbon emissions play a role in it? I'm not sure, but they can't be helping. Al "I'm going to get rich off of global warming paranoia" Gore is a prime example of how stupid things have become. He wins a Nobel Prize for warning us about global warming while he sucks up more electricity in his home in one month than most of us use in a year. Yeah, he's a great example to follow and listen to.
Duuuude, Like I am so stoked!!!! Did you see those sets, maaaann. I mean, like perfect lefts, man....Duuude....man...awww dude!!! Yah! I live in Florida....Yah! I used to live the scene. This is the kind of stuff I hear when the radar looks like this. I gave it up during Hugo. I see "traction" written in the waves.
If you can separate from the reality of their destructive power, pictures of huricanes and other weather events are remarkably beautiful.
This is the most amazing satellite picture of a hurricane that I have ever seen.
AWESOME PHOTO. I'm still looking for Texas.
Thank you Stryder!! To tail your comment to Arletta, no one ever said that the teachers were smarter than the students either! I've know some of my son's elementary teachers that couldn't find their way across the street if you wrote the directions on the back of their degrees! God bless this big blue marble and everyone on it!!
Pollution is the main casue of this Hurricane. The metling of the ice caps and the heating of the atmosphere will only bring mother natures wrath. We can reverse this by reducing pollution from our factories, cars and power plants. We are in the future and we still using a fuel that has been around for over a hundred years. We should have evolved to using a enviromentally friendly form of power with even greater potential for more.
Dallas checking in.
This is what it looks like when the earth makes waves
Do I understand that there are idiots out there that blame Bush for this disaster. Please, he is an idiot, but had nothing to do with a hurricane. Nor did global warming and those of you who think Gore is some kind of ecological guru...grow up. Hurricanes have been around for hundreds (Galveston 1900)and probably thousands of years...like tornadoes and earthquakes and typhoons and volcanoes and floods and all other natural disasters. It is ridiculous to blame anyone for natural disasters. Not everything is political. Pray to God that you don't live anywhere where these things happen. And put your money where your mouth is and donate to the victims thru the Red Cross.
Janice....Are you kidding me?
Wow, Kevin... cool site! I love reggae music... great to dance to! JaniceKatyTX... having gone thru Katrina, I hear ya, hon! Did you do okay? And welcome...
Jordan, Thanks Stay safe , CFDallas! Kevin, Thanks for the "science" lesson, Mr. Gore. :-) Janice, Welcome. If you had been around long enough to be familiar with any of us, or if you had bothered to read all the comments, you would know that we were joking. Calm down.
Janice-The fact that you just jumped into the conversation calling people idiots (Bush) when you completely missed the point and are WAAAAAYYYY off base is very ironic to me. Go reread before you talk. idiot.
Yeah, Janice!! Besides, it's CLEARLY McCain's fault. McCAIN...Hurri-Cain. Coincidence? I DON'T THINK SO! ;OP
This pitcure amazed me when i saw it. It's amazing how something can look so beautiful from above and create so much destruction underneath
Ken, McCain,,,Hurri-Cain??? Good one!!
All you guys are hilarious. I check in once in a while just to get a laugh. MT has been on a role for quite a while. I just wish the general public would wake up and realize where we're heading. Like I said before, I'm an intuitive and a medium; I freak daily and can't do anything about it. But LOVE to see what you guys write. You're my "laugh for a moment" internet family. Thank you.
Ken...LOL!! That's a new one, and very funny indeed!
I can tell you that Ike gave us on helluva buttwhoopin here. Fences gone. Houses gone as if they never were there. Trees uprooted and moved somewhere else. Lines for gas 4 blocks long. And forget about trying to drive down the streets at night when it is pitch black due to lack of street lights. Or the flooded roads. 2 million still are without power and running water. And amazingly, Ike made landfall as a Cat 2 Hurricane. I can't imagine what it would have been like if it had been higher :S
Sarah - can you give me some insight on powerball picks? ;o) btw, how's Elvis? jk Sorry, I couldn't help myself.
RichinHouston... a higher storm, such as Katrina was, would have taken some of the SLABS with it! Unreal!!! For Katrina... Not only were the houses along the coast washed inland, some of the cement slabs were, too. Can you imagine water THAT powerful? And for it to pick up hugh casinos and set them down inland... wow!
The after-effects of a Chuck Norris roundhouse off an oil platform. Score: 11
Thanks Sarah. Is the LA L.A. of La.?
OR
RichinHouston - was that you driving down the street with no lights on? There's a little knob on your steering column with a switch - see it? That controls those little bulbs above your front bumper - they are called headlights. Learn to use them. (for Janice - that too is called humor and most people here will understand that I don't mean a word of this.) Seriously though, I did see a couple of people drive last night without their lights on - don't know what they were thinking - maybe they are part of the looting gangs. All's well in this part of Houston
Looks like here in winter time..likeness of ice covered Earth at -50 temperatures with the wind chill factor..flesh freezes instantly, breath crystalizes and everything crackles; got to know what to do if power goes out in that too.
Looks like where in winter time, MissD?
Ken; Regina SK. at the moment, originally from further north than here though and I've even been to Anchorage among other places on this fine continent :) Thanks for asking.
A closer look into Sally's blue eye revealed a clowdy past
Ike was a weak storm, comparative to say Andrew or Katrina. It was strong in destruction. The humor I get is all the people posting about global warming. We humans have been scientifically analyzing the world for mere hundreds of years. Weather tracking is a science in it's infancy. Global warming real? To a point, yes. Then again it could be a cycle that lasts for hundreds of years, perhaps thousands and we have not enough data to make statements like "Global warming is real and it is a fact". It is actually a theory with proponents on both sides of the fence. On a side note of irony, I am a Miami native who left Miami on August 27, 1992 (three days after Andrew made landfall, I had lost everything), I moved to Houston to work and get blasted by Ike. No kids named Ike or Andrew in my future. This is one amazing picture.
I Live In Beaumont TX. We were told to evacuate during Gustav. Labor Day Weekend and while in the middle of the evacuation Route I called to check on some friends around noon and they said they aren't leaving, they lifted the mandatory evacuation for Beaumont for the Gustav storm. I left Beaumont at 4:00 A.M. heading to San Antonio. After sitting in the evacuation route for 8 hours I still have 50 miles to go to Houston YET!! (one hour drive normally) You can't get off the route once your on, they have you trapped on it. You go 5 MPH and then stop for 15-30 minutes, then go, then stop, then go, then stop. They put you on a 4 lane Hiway then drop you down to a 2 lane Hiway. You are in the middle of 6 million other cars all going somewhere to evade the storm. After I got over the Trinity River Bridge there was hardly a car in sight I don't know where they went but I pushed my car up to 70 and hit the cruise and off we went to the nearest gas station not for gas but you can imagine. As far as the Gas situation was I don't know I filled up 2 days before I left and I didn't run the A/C so I only used 1/4 of a tank that whole time. (blessing) I finally reached San Antonio at 4:30 that afternoon. AS I watched the weather channel I decided I'd stay to see what Joanna and Ike and Kyle were going to do. Make a long story short. IKE TORE THE TEXAS COAST UP. So far as of today 10/6/08 they have confirmed 77 dead on The Galveston Islands alone. Try to imagine a barge that weighs excess of 10 tons being pushed 7 miles and left on the Hiway by water. I was watching the Streaming video on my computer from our TV station KFDM all night during Ike and watching the weather channel and MSNBC I seen the streaker and thought OH WOW the wind is really strong it blew that dudes clothes off. Then the weatherman on KFDM said a call came into 911 that a man was trapped by the Veterans bridge and couldn't get away from the water and it was rising fast. They found him 2 weeks later in a 12 foot pile of Debris. They warned us to either leave or face certain death. We had a catagory 2 hurricane with a catagory 5 High Tide. This storm was 600 miles wide. We now have rats, snakes, alligators, terydactal Mosquitoes by the trillion. Mold is taking over again. Cows walking around in the fields drinking salt water which will make them deathly sick. having to boil the water because salt water got into the fresh water. Jelly fish and shrimp are being found in peoples swimming pools and in standing water in the ditches. They were evacuating Corpus Christi by every mean possible because they thought that is where it was heading. Then they said they thought it was going to Northern Mexico. Well Low and behold IKE came roaring right into Galveston. I don't know if it's global warming or if it's God telling us he's done putting up with all this craziness but as for me and my family. We are looking for housing in South Dakota and Nebraska. After Rita and now IKE I'm done with this. The sad part is I seen 24 SEMI TRUCKS loaded down with ICE AND WATER they were only handing out 1 bag per car. 5 days later these trucks were unloaded and all the pallets were put onto the parking lot at the Ford Arena for the Ice to just sit there and MELT TONS OF ICE. These semi drivers were from all over the USA. The red cross wouldn't even feed them. They sat with their trucks running for a week to keep the ICE frozen and now iot was for nothing and they won't be reimbursed for all that time they sat there idle. So if this happens next year I seriously doubt we'll get any help at all. They put fema workers in Tents on the Ford arena grounds. Hotels were telling people we are not FEMA ASSOCIATED so you either paid for a day and then moved on or you slept in your car. Tyler tx opened an old walmart and fights broke out and police were called. It's just to crazy for me to handle. We are out of here A.S.A.P. COULDN'T COME HOME FOR 3 WEEKS I think we are in the Last days as Jesus Promised us so many years ago,
Aquahoma..really hope you are safe and ok now. Hoping you and your loved ones are ok.
Dear Miss D. Thank you so much for your caring words. Yes we are all fine. Minor damgage to our home but we already got it fixed. WITHOUT FEMA HELP. We replaced our ceiling in the kitchen do to roof leaking our dining room wall windows got sucked out. and our bathroom floor flooded. We figure God made us able to have a job to pay for our blessing he gave us and that way the ones who don't have anything can have our share. We are still looking for a house up north. LOL
