Interesting square electricity-using "candle" on the front table! Robert--I did not hear about Earth Hour until the pics on this blog. I try to conserve energy by turning off unnecessary lights in the house--offset of course by the fact that my (now teenage!) son leaves all lights on in his wake. We don't turn up the heat really high and I sit under afghans when I watch TV or read. I do try to promote "greeness" but I must admit that my biggest reason is saving money...

I recently saw an interesting interview on how people of multi-ethnic heritage view the current political events and commentaries, and on how some people in their communities AND families try to pigeon-hole them into one category. I challenge myself today by asking, what can I do? What can love do through me? How am I making an impact on the growing generations?
WOW!!! I have alot of catching up to do. I get busy for 3-4 days, and everything goes crazy. Have I missed anything fun? It'll take me 3 days just to catch up!
People said similar things when Kennedy ran for president--would his Catholicism influence his decisions as President, etc. Did that take the issue of different religious views out of the picture? Not really--Romney's Morman faith was brought up as an issue. Race is an even more sensitive issue than religion, so I have the feeling that the discussion will continue. On a lighter note, I wonder what the difference is between the green and yellow admission bracelets (aside from the color!!)
RH - I think Hillary as the Nutcracker is "on Message." But why does the "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" keep playing over and over in my mind when I look at this photo?
No, it won't help, because the ignorant folks won't suddenly jump up and say, "Hey, I like black people. They're smart and hard-working, and I hope my daughter marries one." Ignorance isn't just on the surface, it runs very, very deep. What his election WOULD do, though, is show our children that all things are possible for all people. And that would be a nice start.
MM, the bracelets are for the drinks. Did Ed get back yet?
African-American? I didn't know that he was from Africa. Does that make me a French-European-Indian? I thought that I was Cajun. Oh...and he is half caucasion. It should never be about "race"
MickeyMassie....There is no difference in importance of bracletts. The organizers just wanted 2 very awesome, team orientated colors. Colors that represent pride and hard work and dedication and over-whelming determination. Those are good fighting colors that always come out winners. No two better colors co-exist. When you see yellow and green together, one associates it with class and grace and power..... We are talking sports right? GO DUCKS.
Wouldn't it be nice if regardless of race everyone took on the responsibilty of their own lives and aspired to be the very best they could be? We all have our crosses to bear in life, but I am so tired of people using race, economic state, family history and all kinds of other excuses for not taking care of their responsibilities. There are losers and heros in every race, religion, and economic status.
Sorry if I offended anyone, I think I just needed to vent.
Well, TIC??? MM Yellow...has wiped hands with sanitizing tissue. Green...has wiped hands and is potential untapped donor.
Working with kids I have noticed an acceptance and crossing of racial, social, and religious lines. It is our elders who are still holding on to the old hurts. It is time to let go of them and build new foundations----not to forget what has past---but to let go ---if we continue holding grudges the hatred and distrust can only grow. I have worked with kids from all walks of life and enjoyed everyone of them----well, except for a few----and racial, social, and religious lines had nothing to do with it----they were just plain d*mn mean---know doubt about it.
Regardless of race, religion or what have you...no matter who gets office, sadly enough these things will continue to become issues because we make them the issues that they are. If we all could love more than we hate then we might just be surprised to look up and see what kind of country we would live in then.
How anyone can compare Kennedy to Obama or Catholicism to the Muslim faith is beyond me. No where in Catholicism are followers told to kill. Anyone still believing Obama is a Christian is in for a rude awakening should he be elected.
That blonde lady in the front row looks like the same lady holding the Hillary Nutcracker.
ug! *chokes myself and dies* Do I make myself clear?
Probably not put it to rest, Robert, but this man could certainly make a difference. He actually makes me want to vote. ConspiracyMan...that's quite profound.
ReaderAZ-judging from your post, I imagine a good many things are beyond you.
Didn't anyone notice the ORANGE arm bands?
Obama has set race relations back 50 years in this country.
KajunLady... barbaradallas... bayaga... you are all right on the money! I agree with all three of you. Couldn't have said it better myself... and now, I don't have to! LOL! angelfire, how so?
*groan* I'm soooooo tired of politics. I'm starting my anti-turrett's medication today because every 30 seconds, no matter where I go, it's about politics. I can't even watch Tom & Jerry anymore without getting blasted w/ political ads.
Since we are all the same except for the color of our skin, why do we keep talking about it? There is only one race---human. And Nascar.
I agree with many of you. I doubt very seriously that ANYONE living today had to personally endure slavery. No one here has been one, or ownded one. It pains me to know that there are still folks who insist on ripping open a wound that should have long since been healed. As for Obama... well, you all know my views on him. He is a true chameleon. He can be a white or black as he fells the current audience dictates.
o-girl, silly me-what was i thinking?? LOL!
Gabby... love it...NASCAR chuckle
The fact his skin color creates a debate tells me race relations have not progressed much at all in the last 50 years.
Neosho-Just couldn't handle a different opinoin could we? ReaderAZ-Hey listen, they only support complete free speech here if you are a liberal. Don't say what you think, say what NEOSHO thinks instead otherwise leave please. And what Neosho said to you was not rude, it was humorous, if you said it back though, that would be very rude. Besides showing me a picture of Obama where he looks proud and everyone looks so happy...can you actually give me a reason why he would make a good president?
I am appalled at some of the comments on this photo. It is no wonder to me that the wound has yet to heal when people keep pecking at it and pulling it back open and raw with their bigotted opinions. Obama IS white and black. Some days I am more Stapleton than Harris and other days I am more Harris than Stapleton. I have never "ownded" anything.
Has anyone been able to view the 15 minute "Fitna" clip before it gets removed? Now, that's scary! Funny how something like that would come out as the debate goes on about Obama being Muslim. Makes me wonder who is really pulling the strings here? I really do not believe there should be any difference in race. There is only one race - human as GabbyDallas said it...oh and NASCAR! Go "88"!! Vroom...vroom.
The "SuperRich" WHite Republican know that the Republican would be guaranteed a loss in this race if Hillary is the Presidential Candidate. So they poured their money into support Obama to split the Democrats and Obama is a lightweight Idealist that will loose in the Duel against McCain, A war Hero and Pragmatic Politician. It will be a "tough" fight for the Republican if they have to face Hillary.
I agree with a lot of you on the subject of race. I was raised not to notice the color of someone's skin but I know that there are some people out there who hold onto negative stereotypes attached to different skin colors. Sadly I don't know if having a "African-American" president would change the views of many of the bigots holding on to their prejudices.
Gabby ... I strongly disagree. NASCAR is not racing anymore. Not when the cars are all alike and the France family is in-charge.
and then Ducky of course the orange would stand for the Tn Vol----who---did ---and I say this with humble pride ---go further than the ducks---oh yeah---baby---Pearl all the way--- Do you think the FBI all buy their suits from Sears in bulk? Conspiracyman---ed has already returned and handed out bracelets----did you miss yours----I got extras----selling them
AJ: I had to go back twice...but yes, I see the ORANGE wrist band now. Why so many colors? You think that maybe they had to pay a fee of some sort and the colors let him know who paid what? JK Just can't understand the bracelets and why are they wearing them at an outdoor rally?
The question isn't "Is America ready for a black president?", but rather, "Is America willing to be led by a Socialist?" Policies matter more than race.
If I could have one wish in life that would come true, It would be that someday, just maybe, my descendants would live to see a world that is totaly "Color" Blind. Where people would measure you by your virtues instead of what color your skin might be.
GO GABBY! Wouldliketo be in Texas this weekend. Asfor helping, we can always hope. That however is no reason to vote for him. Like others, I don't like politicians nor do I like the current system.
This guy is not African American , knows nothing about slavery or what people who were enslaved ever went through. The part of Africa that is from Kenya, was not even slavery route so what is his claim to African America, can't believe people would fall for his dubious characters. Obama is Whitefrican so he could be either /or, neither /nor. I am still skeptical about his visit to Somalia remenber the outfit he wore, his early childhood years with the muslims, and the too many years he and his wife and children condone pastor Wright, are we just fools or what. I just feel he could not be trusted for the United States of America. who is fooling who?
Jordan...unfortunately...no one knows before an election who will make a good president. If we could...it would be so easy, wouldn't it? I don't think only liberals are welcome here. I think thoughtful comment is always welome. But when one says something totally ridiculous...it will be pointed out.:)
When I was a child, I was taught that this country was "The Great Melting Pot", meaning that we blended together all that each of many cultures/backgrounds brought to this country. I believed in that metaphor-still believe in the possibility that it holds. Like steel, or other amalgams, we should be a blending of all our component parts--allowing the strengths that each component brings to contribute to the strength of this nation. We have a lot to learn from each other and each has much to contribute.
Definitely nice to see some young faces in that crowd.
Anyone whom thinks race relations are not better today than they were 40 years ago is a fool! Anyone whom thinks race relations in this country today aren't problematic is a fool! Anyone whom thinks that talking about race relations is a bad idea is a fool! Anyone whom thinks we can't do anything about it is a fool! Anyone who views them self superior because of their race, religion, or ethnic background is a fool! Anyone whom would defame another man because of their race, religion, or ethnic background is a fool! Now quit fooling around!
Thank you Wayne. Just, thank you.
Wayne-Well said sir. lola-even better then Wayne's comment! Sorry Wayne. KajunLady-YES I SAW IT! From what I have learned, that movie was completely true. They hate and want to kill us and nobody will say anything because they are terrified. It baffles me that Christ is attacked (who said love your neighbor) and yet Muhammad (or whoever) is respected. What a world.
Gabby: you are a girl after my own heart. I love Nascar, and Boyd: who is the France family? Who's your driver, Gabby? ***notice how well I avoided the politics???****
Reader AZ, we can always impeach him if he acts too crazy. Let's not be throwing the baby out with the historical bath water.
i think that obama should be the next president. i think that his views of change in our country are the direction that we need to go in. i also think that hillary is a fire breathing chimera that will devour the non believers and turn the country into a flaming wasteland if elected. and as always, i am just a mole so what do i really know, besides the fact i tunneled into hillarys dressing room as she ripped the skin off of an aide and glued it to her flesh... the one, the only, the sought after, the legendary---------MOLE--------- (><) /^^\ \../
sparky--I don't actually follow Nascar, or any other sport these days (unless grandkids are a sport, LOL), but I know a lot of people who do. I couldn't tell you the name of a single driver even if I had to! MickeyMass--I remember being taught about being the "melting pot", I think it's a GREAT analogy. I was a child in the 50's and remember people making racist comments, etc, but I was NEVER taught that kind of garbage at home. We were taught to treat others the way we would want to be treated. Period. I have never understood why it is always about black/white. Why do some people have a problem with Black/African American but not Mexican/Hispanic, or Chinese, etc?? I just don't get it.
moles--please tell us exactly what views/direction you are talking about. I want specifics, please, because I have never heard anything from this guy but the same old blah, blah, blah. He says we need change, he will make changes...please, tell me how.
As a grandmother very involved in the lives of her grandchildren, (which are wonderful, of course), it makes me proud to see their ability to judge a person by who they are, not what they are. To them, children of other races, religions, etc., never enter into their choices of whose a neat person, and possible friend. It would be wonderful if this race for the presidency could be about qualifications, not race. On one side you have the person who won't vote for Obama because he's black, and on the other you have the person who will vote for Obama because he is black. What about his qualifications for being the President of the United States? Is anyone taking that into account?
Boyd.....are you cheating on me w/ sparky??? It's ok if you are....cuz I like sparky....
Sandra--Apparently not. Same with Hilary--some will vote for her because she's a woman, others will NOT vote for her because she's a woman.
I personally believe being only twenty eight years old,it has only been through my years of my experiences that people will form opinions based on what they're exposed to and their environment that surrounds them it depends on what type of personality you have to allow yourself to change your own opinion and not let people influence it.My point being about senator Obama,he seems like a good person on the outside but it does seem that he does actually seem to try to adapt to his surroundings and manipulate people into believing what he comes up with. And it seems like he is spreading himself to thin to me,with little experience how has he had time to actually think about what everyone in this country needs. That has to be the hardest job in the world, its hard enough for a boss at some company to come up with what he thinks their employees need and whats going to make them happy, let alone someone with not much experience dealing with masses of people telling you what they feel should be changed.Granted their are a lot of obvious changes needed according to the facts.I still believe that its too hard to have that job,and whoever gets it im sure will have no idea to wrap their head around whats going to happen to this country.
Bayaga, I do neeed one of your bracelets, but somebody stole my identity and now I have to dress up in medieval (sp?) gear to pay the bills, and weird smells keep coming from Bull's general direction! Guess I should have gotten one of those free credit reports. Wait! What's that I just stepped in? Who let the ducks out??
Jordan: I'm glad that someone else has seen this clip. I think every warm blooded American needs to see it. Maybe then they can begin to understand why our soldiers are over there! My firend, a retired Colornel with the Air Force sent it to me to view. It wasn't good. Of course he and I share the same views...it's one crazy, mad world! When people like that take pride in killing innocent men, women and children...well, it's just plain sicko! Made me shudder when they showed a beheading...to think that this was someone's son, husband or father. It just saddens my heart. All I know is that God don't whip with no stick!
Amy: You're so sweet!! :)
2nd attempt. I'm glad to know I was successful in getting my point across, despite the typos.
the only thing i have heard this man say is- "change, we need change, and if you vote for me there will be change" what change? what changes will he make? is the change he speaks of just that there will be a mixed race person in the white house for the first time? is that the change he will make? does he realize that even if he is elected he will not be a dictator and that presidents dont have complete power? there are people to answer to. hopefully neither one of them (if elected) will be able to do too much damage in four years. thank god.
sparkplug----the France family ---CEO of NASCAR----son has taken over from dad (2003) and is changing lots of rules---I think he is most noted for who he represents as the head of Brandsense, a marketing company whose clients include Tony Stewart, the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, and he did market Britney Spears -not impressed by the younger France.
Some of these comments are truly amazing. He's NOT African-American? His father is from Africa. His mother is American. What's so hard to understand about that? And about setting race relations back 50 years, what's he supposed to do? Not run? That make it sound as if they're are good race relations now and him running for president upsets that. Hey Jordan, opinions as ignorant as what ReaderAZ put down need to be called out. The reason we're having this discussion is because people like readerAZ appearantly have a phobia of different races and religions. People like that are the reason there are bad race relations now. People have predjudices that are ill-concieved and are too stubborn or embarrassed to change. If race relations somehow are put back 50 years, then he, and probably you too, are the reasons why.
Gabby – If I may answer your question on specific changes from Obama. I agree all candidates for POTUS have pretty much the same tired old stump "blah" speech that they have recited over and over. What seems to be unique about Obama is that he is not beholding to the self-serving entities that have been pulling the strings of our country for far too long. The hope is Obama will work for the American people and more importantly not only protect and defend the constitution, but perhaps even understand this hallowed document. That’s a change. Obama is about as opposite as one can get from Bush and that is appealing to most Americans. Will he actually be a great president, we’ll see? As far as the next president, we can only go up.
Sandra great comment!
Jordan- do you have a mouse in your pocket? "We"? Now YOU are being idironical! I offered suggestions and you chose to be nasty about it AGAIN! Our young Christa could teach you an awful lot about maturity and being human. She could teach you more about promoting the love of her religion and bringing others to it instead of pushing them away with rudeness and arrogance. Please see Proverbs 16:18. I tried to be nice to the little gobshite and his banjaxed attitudes. Looks as if I was foostering. Be wide with your blather, you bold bollocks. Be wide!
I think it would be good to have a multi-racial president. He has dealt with what it means to be ethnic in this country, and therefore has gained understanding and experience. As much as people do not like to see it, it is and has been harder for people to succeed if their skin is a shade darker. No one can deny that, or else we wouldn't be having this conversation right now. Just maybe he would have every races' interests at heart if he becomes president. Too bad he's not part Hispanic too.
Sparky the France family goes way back in the structure and founding of modern day NASCAR. Basically what they say goes.Which is really a shame and a sham. 40 years ago it was truly stock car racing where you could recognize a car on the track and then go to a dealership and buy one. Now they are all identical in shape and size; with only the engines being different, but not something you can go out and buy. Amylos.. cheating, never.
Wayne...I completely agree that policy is the important thing. How do you see Obama as a Socialist? Or Jordan? Anyone?
Gabby, the predominant prejudices may have been with African-Americans but it definitely has not only been with them - other races have also suffered prejudices, as have those with different sexual orientations and even women have suffered prejudices as well
If we really want to change the way things are going in this country, we need to start with the little guys and local politics. We need to require our elected officials to do the job that is set before them to do. For example, Sen. Byrd is in the US Senate as a representative of WV to help the US decide what is best for the US, not what is best for WV but he keeps getting elected because of the federal goodies that he brings back to WV, even though it could be of more benefit to the United States if it were spent on national needs. That is his job. We have WV senators in the state to take care of WV. Politicians should not be let ride out their terms if they are doing nothing, missing congressional sessions and missing voting opportunities. We might need to start using that dirty word option, impeachment. We should never vote for someone because they are democrat or republican, back or white, mixed or pure-bred with ancestors back to the Mayflower, rich or poor but based on their record of perfomance to date and their integrity. If we started at the bottom and cleaned out a lot of trash we might actually get a president and congress that can do the right thing for our country; remembering of course, that you can please some of the people part of the time and part of the people some of the time but never all the people all the time.
jordan, do you just like to pick on people, antagonize and be generally disagreeable and rude? NEOSHO please just ignore the (mulel).
Here is the kind of change Obama wants for America.... direct quote: "Whatever we once were, we're no longer just a Christian nation; we are also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation, a Buddhist nation, a Hindu nation, and a nation of non-believers."
I know, I know, those little wrist bands are for a theme park. I think the orange one is for the Obama loop-de-loop ride.
Kay....that's not a change...that's a statement of fact. That's what we are.
Hey that's right Mickey, yellow is admission and some child rides, green is admission, child rides and entertainment venues, orange includes all rides, and blue includes all rides all day and red - everything, all day.
lonewolf-I tried ignoring him, but he insists on finding fault with so many of us, even when we have not addressed him. I tried using logic and reason with him, but it's like shooting at an unarmed man. I've tried using compassion and he throws it in my face. I have disabilities which prevent me from leaving my home much. I use my comp to stay in contact with family and friends, and now he ridicules that. It seems to me there is no end to his nastiness. There is no way for me to avoid his cruelty, save leaving this site. Unlike Jordan, I have made some very dear friends here, so I'm not going anywhere! If he gets his jollies from badgering a crippled grandmother, he needs more help than any of us can give him.
Wow, Please excuse all my spelling, bad grammar and sentence structure last night, or early this am. I obviously was overly tired and left out words, forgot to finish words, etc. I'll have to stop operating on overdrive. I knew what I wanted to say, just didn't get it done well.
KayfromPCreek - That isn't necessarily "the kind of change Obama wants for America". He was stating the reality of who we are as a nation of many religions. He is correct. Also, our Bill of Rights is pretty clear that we should not have an established religion. As a Christian, I think we should look at ourselves and recognize that neither politics nor our government can or should carry out or participate in our spiritual work.
bayaga & Boyd: Now that you say that the France family does ring a bell. JordOn/Tom: If I've told you once, I've told you a million.... GO AWAY!!! No one here wants to hear your crap!
NEOSHO...you bring much wit and wisdom to this site. Jordan...not so much. Since there have been no new posts, I've been reading over these more thoroughly. I found lola's to be ridiculous and not worthy of mentioning but she got the big "thumbs up" from Jordan. His other hero, Wayne, has not seen fit to elaborate on the "socialist" statement. If Jordan just gets so much out of attacking people but has nothing of value to offer in the way of intelligent comment...he's pretty easy to ignore. His post on the Hillary photo made me think perhaps he does have a sense of humor. He should try to cultivate that.
Thank you anndee.
Jordan - Don't go away, you're fun! Every time I write something I look to see if you have some vehement disagreement, to which I can vehemently disagree (although still winsome)! Anyway, it's a blog, noone can direct anyone where to go except themselves! As for Obama, I like his charisma, his willingness to stick with his pastor, and, yeah, his youth. But it seems as if he's running a Rooseveltian campaign. Roosevelt won because he wasn't Hoover and remained vague about his policies throughout his run. Obama has a chance of winning because he's not Bush nor Republican and is almost as vague. But with the state of this country as it is, and with enough downward momentum to get possibly very, very bad, how is he supposed to elaborate on anything? Which is possibly why Roosevelt didn't elaborate much.
NEOSHO-:D Thanks for using me as a cyber grenade to throw at Jordan, it was awesome!
For what it's worth, I think Jordan should stay. I don't always agree with him, but I have some respect for his convictions. If there is one thing I have learned here, it's that we will never, ever all agree on anything.
christa-could you get ANY cuter?!!! I, for one, think the rest of us are very lucky to have you here with us.
KajunLady says that Obama is not an African-American because he's from Kenya? You Republicans are one intelligent group of people, aren't you? All sittin', huddled together in your trailer houses, surrounded by flags, firearms and crucifixs, keeping your unborn babies safe from the homos and the Mexicans. Praise Jesus and pass the ammunition!
NEOSHO- ^_^ jajaja Whereismycountry- wow, I was fine, I really was until you brought the Mexican people into your mess. Now guess what?! You get to be chewed out my a 15yr old girl! If I remember correctly, you are taking what our KajunLady has said out of context. I believe that she said, he really has no right no plead slavery on his behalf, because Kenya was not even involved in the slave trade, as it was out of the white man's way to travel clear across to the other side of Africa, when he had a whole eastern coast.Oh, and thank you for telling me that I'm smart, unfortunately I can't say the same to you, trying to pick a fight on a blog! That's lame -_- And don't even say that it was an opinion, because it is very clear and obvious that it was a verbal attack. Excuse me if this is petty, but isn't the correct term 'trailer homes' or even 'mobile homes'? You are really dumb. Crucifixs?! If you're going to try to insult someone by way of religion, spell something right.Try crucifixes, you moron. Unborn babies huh? Care to explain this further? Are you hinting at abortion? I think everyone is with me when One commands 'Thou shalt not kill'. Religious or not, it is called the value of life. Mexicans. I'll just let you know that by typing that word and using it offensively against me has gotten you in a world of trouble with me. Safe from the Mexicans, since when have we been 'hiding' from them? Personally, every time I see one, I try to introduce myself, and am very excited to ask how they are or just say hello. It drives me insane when people get upset with them for speaking Spanish when they are with each other. You have no idea how hard it is to learn the English language do you? Especially when one letter can sound three different ways! Do you even care to know that the Mexicans that enter the United States to live legally, are as angry as us,or even more that there are those that do it illegally? You haven't the slightest idea, what Mexico is like do you? To me, you sound just like another ignorant, and arrogant American, and to answer your screen name question, your country is located beneath Canada and above Mexico, furthermore unfortunately we have to call you one of us Americans. If anyone cares to debate immigration with me further, I will be glad to, and please don't be afraid because of my age, if you have an opinion I really want to hear it.
Just for the record...it was lola who posted the whole Kenya..slavery thing. Jordan thought she was brilliant and I thought she was an idiot. The "where" guy is just deranged.
Christa, I applaud your butt chewing, but sweetie, you gave him about 25 lines more acknowledgment than he deserved. He's just an enormous tool and a idiot to boot, and all we can do is hope he gets lost on the way to the polls. His intellect implies that is entirely possible.
Where-you are just one big hate bomb rolled into a sweet little bundle, aren't you? A regular ****ing ray of sunshine! I'm afraid you left out a few, though. Think for a while and next time Mommy allows you some computer time maybe you can hit the rest of them. To answer the question of "WhereIsMyCountry", I believe it's under the bridge with the rest of the trolls.
AHEM!!! next photo please
How does Barack Obama change a light bulb? Well, he's never done it yet, either, but he has a plan. How does Hilary Clinton change a light bulb? Well she's never exactly done it yet, but she has lots of EXPERIENCE watching her husband change light bulbs and she's sure she could do it if we just gave her a chance. How does John McCain change a light bulb? He doesn't bother. He spent years in a POW camp. John McCain's not afraid of the dark. How many democrats does it take to screw in a lightbulb? It's a trick question. The democrats never change anything they just sit around and whine about how George Bush's energy dept was responsible for the bulb blowing.
Gabby...that's what I'm talking about...it's funny (even to an Obama fan) and tells us where you stand rather than just ignorant bashing. I love it! And, I, of couse disagree. I would prefer a man with a plan than just being left in the dark. See folks? We can state opposing views without hatefulness and ill feelings?
anndee- I hate your ability to not hate those who disagree with you.
Where...I'm blessed like that.
Okay – you asked for it – how many Republicans does it take to change a light bulb? The following was copied from the Internet. Answer: 10 1. One to deny that the light bulb needs to be changed 2. One to attack the patriotism of anyone who says the light bulb needs to be changed. 3. One to blame Clinton for burning out the light bulb. 4. One to tell the nations of the world that they are either for changing the light bulb, or they are for darkness. 5. One to give a billion dollar no-bid/cost-plus contract to Halliburton for the new light bulb that they never changed because they "lost" the money. 6. One to arrange a photograph of George W. Bush, dressed as a janitor, standing on a stepladder under the banner: “Light Bulb Change Accomplished.” 7. One administration insider to resign and write a book documenting in detail how George W. Bush was literally in the dark. 8. One to viciously smear #7. 9. One surrogate to campaign on TV and at rallies to inform us how George Bush has had a strong light bulb changing policy all along. 10. Finally, Joe Lieberman to confuse Americans about the difference between screwing the light bulb and screwing the country.
Gabby, I knew I liked you!
Where/Country draws an accurate picture. Whether they meant to or not, Republicans have painted themselves into a corner with this kind of "Rally 'round the family with a pocket full of shells" idea. To clear it up, Catholics use crucifixes and have historically voted democrat. Protestants don't use crucifixes (they use crosses - no Jesus on these) b/c they emphasize the resurrection from the dead.
The fact of the matter is Sen. Obama is REALLY not an American. Not to me, he isn't. The fact that he is illegitmate, was raised and schooled alone for the majority of his life, while his mother and half-sister was overseas.... I'm not so certain HE knows who allegience is to. Is it the village in Kenya where his father is from and paternal grandmother now lives? Hawaii where he was born and attended high school? Jakarta, Indonesia where his mother lived, he attended middle school and his half-sister now lives? I want a full-blooded American sitting in the Oval Office, thank you very much! Too, too many of my brothers, cousins, uncles and friends have died for this, THIS country. Frankly, this even amazes me!
My only " hope" is that the issue of race as we know it once and for all desapears. It does too much harm. We would have to start by avoiding the darn question. So eliminate the question from sensus, loan aplication. license aplications, school paperwork. No one should care. But seems like everyone cares. So, is Obama a black american?, mulato american?, african, african american?, african northamerican?white? white american? mix american? white north american? Just american? well, he is a citizen of the US of America. That is all we should care about. Not what color. So, I married a German, Norwegian, Czech, and bohemian white american and I was was born in Mexico son of Spaniars, Native American, Italian an French born in Mexico but I am labeled Hispanic. So, now I need to explain to my children how to navigate through this good for nothing labels that only segragate for no reason. So,yes, I hope Obama by becoming presindent start a great needed change. Although, it would be my choice that Presindet McCain would work on it.
wow i like how you totally ignored me on this photo WTMFC
Benito-Hablas el espanol?!
Candace – I don’t know if you are trying to be contrary to incite a reaction or if this is your true thought process. The “Obama is not American” is a fabrication. If you don’t like him, fine, but you lose credibility when you make stuff up. Hawaii is a state where Obama was born, which makes him a “full-blooded” American. The fact that he is well traveled can only be an asset to him as president. Also, his grandfather fought under General Patton in World II and his grandmother worked on an assembly line making airplanes for the war. You mentioned you had too many of your “brothers” and “cousins”, etc. that have died for this country? Really? Brothers - plural - have died? See, I think you are making stuff up, again.
Candace...I'm so happy to see you have acquired a sense of humor. That was hilarious!
To quote from Senator's Obama's 2004 reprint from his first book, *Dreams From My Father*: In the book, Obama recounts a sermon by pastor Jeremiah Wright called "The Audacity of Hope," from which Obama would take the title of his second book.[4] Obama quotes Wright, describing the world as one "where white folks’ greed runs a world in need, apartheid in one hemisphere, apathy in another hemisphere … That’s the world, On which hope sits!" Have any one of you read it? Perhaps you should. Get to know your candidate. Shining: His maternal grandparents had no, none, nil influence over Barack Obama whatsoever, however patriotic they may seem.
Candace...and that quote would be a problem because.....?
Candace - what is it about that statement you don't like? You give no opinion. You left out the qualifying words before it. Since Obama lived with his maternal grandparents for quite some time, I would say they were influential in his life. Also, waiting on the number of your brothers that have died for this country?
Si, lo he hablado y escrito toda mi vida. However, since this is a forum in english we should respect and speak english. This bring me to an interesting topic? should we be speaking english or spanish in this country? We should be making a great effort to integrate in the American culture and learn definetely English. If we are in the USA we should absolutely do averything we can to speak English teach our children english, speak english at home. We should also learn Spanish and/or any other lenguage we can but not have Spanish as ur first lenguage anymore. No preferential treatment of any kind at school to our kids. It hurt them more than help them. If we want too live here ( USA) we should immerse in the culture and for that, we should obey the laws and protect our rights as anyone else. It just make sense!. Lenguage should unite Americans. North Americans of the United States of America that is.
Benito...very well said. Welcome.
Candace - by law, naturalized Americans are NOT eligible to run for President. So, if Sen Obama were not an American (a full-blooded, natural American), he could not legally run for the office of President. FYI, Obama is not the first presidential candidate to have a non-American parent. Chester Arthur, our 21st president, was the son of an Irish immigrant. Also, many of our Presidents lived overseas (in France, Russia, England, the Philippeans, China...) before being elected President.
Welcome, Benito! You speak eloquently and true!
Thanks Anndee. See, if you do the right thing, and you participate with your surroundings. The rest of the people get to know you and know about you. I believe interaction creates knowledge and changes people. Lets make our quest to show ourselves as we are. It is not a sin to be naive about someone else's background or buy into esteriotypes. I think we( so call minorities) should stop taken offense for peoples opinions and remarks and instead we should show ourselves. I can not tell you how great this is and how much our sociaty benefits from it. So we should continue our quest to show ourselves to eradicate stereotypes and labels. For the good of everyone.
Benito- ok que chido!Estudio a la escuela! Crees que puedes ayudarme a veces? Gracias... The thing that gets me is when Americans get so offended when Latinos speak to each other in Spanish. I just don't understand. Granted, they should not use it as an advantage to say what they want without being overheard. The kids at school call me a Spanish freak, yet they don't even care enough to ask why I care about the language and it's people so much. The reason is to be able to be used by my God to translate so that one may hear and receive the gospel of my Risen Savior!!!
Candace, I really dig your name but that's about it... Shhh... don't tell her that Hawaii is a State cause that will totally throw off her groove of her 49 State American ignorant dream, complete with white picket fence of crap... and yes the grass is always greener (Just not as green in Hawaii, clearly being sarcastic) O and on the US Map, Alaska really isn't an island by Hawaii either, just to clarify. ha ha..
Ok, after reading many of these posts, I've decided to chime in. this Lola person...these statements are crasy "Obama is Whitefrican"...what is that? Saying that because he hasn't experienced Slavery personal, he has no write to call himself "African American". Actually, he is more true to that statement than most Black Americans. His father is from Africa and his mother is American, hince, "African American". What does salvery have to do with that term? it is just idiotic! And someone else commented that Obama changes to fit the audience...well, don't they all? Are you kidding me...What about Hillary's Tearful presentation in NH, then her Angry Rants in OH, then her meetings with older women's groups to talk about Health Care or in front of middle class families saying (paraphrasing): "I am one of you, and I know your struggle, and I will rebuild the middle class". Or her switch for PA (and OH) on NAFTA. It is common sense to speak to your audience in a way they can relate. why would you go before a White Audience talking about Black community issues. Or vise-versa? Why would you speak heavily about poverty and how you will improve it in the community when they are wealthy. Different things are important to the American people across the country, so as a candidate, you have to address what is important to the people you are with. And it is not flaky, it is politics. And many of you spoke of the "Melting Pot", I agree with that concept, but comments that I've seen here about Religion, and ethnicity show that this country just isn't there yet. But we need to be.
Ok, Candace...these comments are just crazy and divisive. It is this type of thinking that has America where it is. Many of us Americans (and even more it seems as time goes on) have family ties in very diverse areas. I think it is a major plus to Barack Obama to have such insight into various cultures. It presents much more open-mindedness than seems obvious from any of the other candidates. But Candace, you need to get your facts straight. Barack was born in America and lived with his Mother and Sister with his Step Father in Indonesia for a time. Then moved back to the US and his Mother's family helped support his development. Because his father is Kenyan, it is his right to feel the need to connect with that family and it should not be put out there or viewed negatively or un-American. I think anyone who says things like you have presents more of an "unAmerican" front.
Hey Candace, I have a question what the He-double-hockey-sticks is a "full-blooded American"? can you explain this comment? As so many have said, America is full of immigrants and 100s of nationalities over centuries...so what consititutes a full blooded American?
Personally I think Obama has other mothives for wanting to be president I have seen photos of him refusing to look at our nations flag, there have been reports of him using the koran (SP?) instead of the bible. Too much stuff doe not add up and should raise alot of questions about him that no one seems to want to ask, and why! because of the race issue? give me a break. Too many people just dont want to step on racial toes and all that is doing is hurting this country even more. This nation is no longer the envy of all others some are laughing at us and instead of doing anything about it everyone whines and nitpicks wake up
WhereIsMyCountry: I so apologize for giving you the wrong impression. Maybe if you knew me from my past postings, you'd realize that no harm is ever meant from this end. I simply meant that he should just call himself "American"...who gives a hoot where his family is from or what color or creed? He was born here...he wasn't born in Kenya. My ancestors come from Europe...but I'm noted as plainly American. Doesn't matter what color I am. And who said that I was Repulican? You seem to be judging people by their answers...so, again I apologize for giving the wrong impression. Lighten up will ya?
bayaga, There is still racism in the world and it's not only the elders! I live with it every day! I am just speaking from experience!!! GabbyDallas, so agree with you!!! As for choosing the right person for the job, that's hard, because you can only hear them talk until they become president, then, can you know but then its too late, we are stuck with that wrong president for while, all the while shaking our heads wishing we had known the truth about that person.
Renee - I don't think there was a truthful statement in your entire post.
GabbyDallas, Democrates are too busy to change a light bulb, they are busy cleaning up messes like the republicans make!!!
Welcome Benito! I agree with you and I compliment you by saying that if you live in America, learn the language. With that being said, I also agree with the fact that there are many different peoples living here in the great USA; why not learn as many languages as you can? I'd love to speak binlingual. I only speak English, French and some Spanish, so I don't think that it fits with bilingual just yet. Spanish has been a little difficult for me...I just can't get the tongue rolling right...but I'm still trying. I'd also like to learn German and Arabic... I think that learning the different cultures and languages would strengthen our country from within.
PAY ATTENTION!!! I AM NOT POSTING AS ANYBODY EXCEPT FOR JORDAN. I MAKE NO POSTS ON THE WEEKENDS SO YOU CAN PRETTY MUST IGNORE ANYTHING THERE. I AM NOT CANDACE, I AM NOT TOM, I AM NOT WHEREISMYCOUNTRY. GROW UP! I WILL NOT ADDRESS THIS EVER AGAIN. I HAVE SHOWED YOU EVIDENCE MULTIPLE TIMES. EDITORS-PLEASE MAKE A POST LETTING THEM KNOW I HAVE NEVER DONE THIS BS SO THEY CAN SEE THEY ARE A BUNCH OF IDIOTS
MikeCT-It's called free speech, end of argument. Probably me too? Such assumptions cause poor race relations, hypocrite. You are more angry than you are smart. I can almost relate, haha. Whereismycountry-wow, spew racism and stereotypes all over and then tell Americans that we are immature and need to grow up? You write well so I think there may be a brain in there...care to argue with an American?
In my opinion... a full-blooded American might be the Indian tribes that were here already... yet, even they migrated over to our shores... from where? Russia? Or were they on this part of the land when pangea seperated? Who truly knows? Maybe there are no true Americans... My ancestors: Irish, French, German, and American Indian Cherokee... so what does that make me? I'm a "mixed up" kid, as we used to say when I was young... oh my gosh! I remembered that... a milestone in my old age! "Brain fart!" LOL! Lighten up, everyone... now, back to the party... where was I?????
Renee...You have no idea how easy that shot would be to take. Senator Obama is followed around 24/7 from the news media. All he had to do is look away once and anyone with a lens could snap a photo of The Senator not looking at the flag. If I followed you around 24/7, and i seriously have no interest in doing that, could I get a photo of you not looking at our flag. I put my hand on my heart during every game, parade and church function while the national athem is being played but I do believe I have glanced at the children a time or too to make sure they were doing the same. I hope I am judge for that the way you have judged Senator Obama. And a side note, whoever took the photo of him looking away during the national athem was looking away as well, should they judged in the same light? They too were looking away. And I bet for a much longer amount of time.
WOW!!! This is WAAAAY too heavy and mean-spirited for me. I am here to have fun and get some laughs, but a few of you...wink, jordOn, lola, etc seem to want to do nothing more than bring the whole place down. Im out!
Candace, I'm sure his allegiances lie with the U.S. You make it sound as if he's gonna give this nation up to Indonesia or Kenya if he gets elected. And what does illegitimate have to do with it? He was born in the U.S. with an American parent. The fact that he's lived in different parts of the world shouldn't frighten you.
Marlene---I was nine the first time I was picked up by the police because I refused to let the lady who helped raised me go to the back of the DQ to order ice cream while I could buy mine in the front window. I did not see the difference in our skin---I only knew that I loved her---she begged me not to kick and scream---she was willing to go to back---she was use to that----I was not. The owner called the police and they took me home---without my ice cream----My dad told them they were lucky---he would have punched the guys lights out. Race relations are not great----but it has changed with no thanks to Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. I do miss Martin Luther King. I think he could have made a change. Renee---you read extreme right garbage- you need to expand your material.... Benito---welcome---you have spoken many words of wisdom----the same ones that my own baba yaga taught me widget in training---Candace humor was funny---ha-ha---you may have your first zap----I personally thought it was J in drag---- ConspiracyMan ---I love medieval gear---if you keep Terry and his duck tape away---you get two bracelets--- CHRISTA---I STAND IN AWE!!!!!!!!!
sparky-ok now, thats is like 4 posts where you indirectly insult me. You want my attention or something? Then I suggest being quiet...and I am not going anywhere. I will be posting more often now thanks to Sparky
Bayaga, I see you finally made contact with that nail; I'm surprised that there was any nail left to hit after denting the crap out of it... But, nonetheless good for you. Glad you enjoyed the humor. Hate to ruin your ego, but that's not the first time I have been "zapped" nor will it be the last, ha ha...
The very fact that we are talking about race proves that it is still a big issue. If Obama gets elected, I fear for his life. Racists do not change their views overnight. We could begin by stopping the labels. People consider me a Mexican-American. Please, I was born here and do not owe allegiance to Mexico. I am an American but proud of my Mexican background. Obama should be considered for election on his views and seen only for a man seeking the Presidency. But I guess that's just a dream!
Bay-that makes me want to buy you a whole friggin' truck load of ice cream! This "idiot" has not been SHOWN one scrap of evidence, except maybe that WIMC would not have made that particular mistake. Please call me an idiot or a moron just one more time.
bayaga...not recognizing sarcasm?
bayaga--your story reminds me of the movie Corinna Corinna. I LOVE that movie!!
In defense of Obama (although I do not support his candidacy for president), the rumor about him swearing in on the Quran is simply that... a rumor (you can google it). My concerns center around his experience (or lack there of), and his liberal spending history.
I have seen a lot of change in attitude from when I was a child until now. We are making progress and we should be proud of ourselves for that. But, it is still a work in progress. Many derogatory stereotypes (not just racial, but ethnic as well - also male/female) are no longer accepted. The way that these were felled was by open discussion and the success and contributions of the people scorned. Lilian points out that the fact that we are still talking about it shows that it is still an issue is valid. I would like to add that the fact that we ARE talking about it gives us the opportunity to open eyes and minds -- allowing the avenues of change to be paved. I have not yet decided whom to support - I don't decide based on looks (race, sex, age) but on message, ability to speak and connect with people (quite necessary in diplomacy), intellect, experience (in a variety of venues). To me, it is unfortunate that the 2-party system we favor often co-opts the message of candidates so they fit into the neat little boxes that can be sold to public.
SouthernLady! Wow...we do have alot in common...that's scary. My great paternal grandmother was American Indian, Cherokee. I'd never heard anybody else put it out that way...makes me feel at home. I don't know who I'm supporting yet either...I'm still for Chuck Norris! Now, lets all join hands and sing.
This is very intense. The two things that we are very touchy about: race and politics. I think a few people even threw in religion to add to the fire. I think we all have a lot of researching to do. Instead of just asking, "what exactly does he want to change," let's actually read about it. Research each of the candidates, research information on the parties, and don't let race or sex be an issue. Then vote accordingly, and make sure that everyone you know does the same. Hi Benito, welcome. You have a very poetic way of speaking.
In NEOSHO's defense, I have never read anything in her posts that smacks of ignorance. Neither have I seen any of the masturbatory statements from her that are posted simply to elicit negative reactions and "prove" ones intellect. ANYONE who hops on a blog and posts insults - either direct or blanketed - based on snippets of opinion and personal info. is being a hypocrite and a coward. Yeah, preachin' to myself here, too. Also like to add some admiration for the dialogue between Wink and Jordan. You better not be posting as two people, brosef.
Kajun... my maternal great-grandmother, too, is the one who had the Indian blood in her. Her name was Minerva GENTLE, she was Cherokee.
bayaga-why?! :) Kajun- I can teach you a way to roll your rr's!!! ok try a word such as 'freeze' and replace the 'r' with a 'd'. Now say it out loud. Repeat, rapidly and work your way up to as fast as you can, eventually the sound should be that of rolling your rr's! You can use any word that contains an r that is not the first or last letter some other examples to work with are: free, prize, etc!
Sure, Christa I can help with your Spanish class. Bayaga... It would be interesting to know your baba yaga. As you can see, it is all common sense stuf!. We just need to want to end this racial crap! a few years back as I was vacationing in Duluth, Minnesota and I found a book at a bench next to the lake.it was a small book. It was a Bill Cosby book and it was a bout his life and the begining of his career in the sixties ands seventies. I read it in that bench. To my surprise, Bill Cosby talked back then about stopping from feeling sorry for ourselves and taking offense from someone elses frustrations. I wish I would have kept the name of the book; instead left it there hopefully for someone else to read. I thought it was good wisdom and had to pass it to my kids someday. I have. You see, I believe that each and everyone of us has the power to allow someone to ofend us. Therefore, we should also use that power not to allow anything or anyone to ofend us. If we master this. We can truly be proud of ourselves, we can be succesful and enjoy it. I have. try it. It works. I take no offense. nobody can ofend me. I am in charge in the hurting feelings department. It works.
Well said Mickey. I hope votes count this time.
The subject of the President hopefuls is very passionate indeed! But regardless of our opinions we must consider our option and choice VERY carefully. We are all Americans and hopefully want the best leaders for our country. This (in my opinion) is a very tricky election. I consider myself to be a libertarian, I wish for the government to remain out of my affairs...less laws and more personal choice...remember freedom? I fear Obama he seems to have come out of no where and just appeared on the scene. I fear he is a Muslim and that he doesnt have "American" views. Then their is Hillary and as a woman I just cant muster up any respect for her on any level. I feel like the American people are desperate for a change but for the sake of our country please consider carefully before diving in the water cause ya cant be too sure whats below the surface....God bless us all!
Benito - I appreciate your philosophy - very wise. I've tried to pass the same thinking to my son when kids at school made fun of him (mixed success there, but he has made it through pretty well!) Thank you for sharing that!
Jordan: Please see my posts under the pic with the guy holding his hands over his head.
Christa!! OMG!! It worked! Thanks! I'm sounding very Spanish this afternoon. My partner came in because I was practicing out loud and asked "what the heck or who the heck are you talking to"? Ha. I told him that I was practicing my Spanish rr's...he thought that was funny. He said, "Oh great, I have to deal with the french stuff and now the Spanish"...haha! I say, keep alert, you never know what I'm gonna try next. I'' try anything once, twice if I like it. :) Benito: Nice concept. I'll try it!
In behalf of all Candace's everywhere I apologize for statements that have been blogged here that were untrue and well... just plain silly (Sorry hun, but I'm trying to bring back some kinda dignity to our name that we so unfortunately and uncommonly share.) If you want to take it up with me in my doing this, so be it and bring it. Just come better prepared and yes Utah is a State (4th generation born and raised, so that pretty much shoots down half of your ammo already.)
I give little creedence to race. (Not to races but to viewing races in a particular light because they belong to that group. Whether positive or negative, that is racism.) Calling Obama "black" when he's as black as he is white seems to me to run back to the racism of old (and racism is used for both relative "good" and "evil") in which a portion of blood could overwhelm the whole, changing instantly a person from "white," as though it were a pure colour to be tainted on a palette. I don't care if he would make a good African-American/Black president. I care if he would make a good president. It's not that I believe in a colourless world (such a place doesn't exist). But race should not factor into our value system. In theory, race is a futile classification perpetuated on both sides and used to both defend and antagonize. Because my great-grandparents were born in England yet raised in Mexico (as were my grandparents and father), I am "caucasian." A fifth-generation American who has a great-great grand-father from Mexico is "Latino" or "Mexican-American." Go figure. They may not be bilingual like I am, yet its their "heritage." In practice? Quite another matter. Somehow, Gate's sarcastic refrain of "Please sir, it's only a metaphor" doesn't quite seem to work in reality.
Sparky, I know Jordan has an effect on women but come on girl, pull yourself together... ha ha...
Obama is wrong for America and I am not prejudiced. He does not have the experience! He's a junior senator, for goodness sake! Wake up, America! Someone with a bachelor's degree does not need to be the CEO of a company straight from college.
SouthernLady: Her first name escapes me at the moment, but her last name was Istre (pronounced East)...you probably know that being from here, but just making sure. After this wedding bliss going on out here, I plan on really researching my roots. I'd like to visit some reservations. I've always felt drawn to reservations for some reason, so I figure that it's time I find out. I'm sure that it's not gris-gris. But, I would love to meet a real Witch Doctor.
NEOSHO, Thanks for staying and not being run off. Sparky, don't go. We have got to stick together and not let a few malcontents run us off. I don't know or understand half of what they write is even about and they make NO sense anyway. I didn't know senate experience was a requirement for a president. And, when they are elected, we do not have to be stuck with them for 4 years. I thing there is such a thing still as impeachment. All we have to do is elect people with enough guts to use it. Benito, Welcome to America and to the blog. Jordon, you've never shown anything and we only have your word that you don't post on weekends so, how do you expect the editors to tell us anything. Do you by any chance have multiple personalities? There are so many rumors being spread about Obama it is ridiculous. As for the religion of the person who becomes President: We've had Christian presidents and they have not managed to turn the who US into Christians. Why should we thing that a Mormon or Muslin or anyone else could do the same. The president is not a god. We supposedly are a nation free from religious persecution, but that's clearly not happening. I'm not saying I'm for Obama. I think we need new democratic candidates.
bayaga I too feel that Martin Luther King could have made a change, it saddens me that he was killed but its that way even in the USA, you can try to make a change but any good person trying to make that change is on death row especially when it comes to racism and our Environment. I do understand that we have come along way and there is some good but Racism is a huge word not meant to ignore. Example; My sister in law and I were walking on the side walk in mid-town, she was job searching, any way, after a long day of job searching with "sorry we are not hiring" or "we just hired some one to fill that position" after a couple too many of sorry I decided to go to the same stores/restaurants that turned her down; see I am three quarters Native American but don't look it to some folks and my sister in law looks totally Native, sure enough they handed me applications and and set up interview dates! Well that wasn't bad enough, as we were walking in town on the side walk, we could hear a bunch of people shouting, next thing we new, a car with four people in it, not kids, driving up to us screaming out the window to us calling us racial slurs, I got mad and challenged them to come back and say it to our faces but they just kept yelling rude words to us, drove by us a few times before they would quit. The town was full of people and no one would do any thing or say any thing just starred at us! That's just one of several real life relationships between a lot of white people and Native Americans.
Lonewolf- I have no plans to go anywhere, even if it does get a bit warm in here from time to time. I may take a day or two here and there to "collect myself", though, from time to time. JustJerod, thank you. Gabby-it's been a long time since I saw Corina Corina, but I still blow at traffic lights to make them turn green!
BettyBoop: Amen to that! Experience is necessary in my opinion. Welcome.
No worries l.w. I'm not going anywhere..... except maybe, to get another drink
Kajun-Glad I could help ^_^
Candace, could you please not say things like that? She was just telling me to look at another post and frankly, your response was really weird.
I've been "overlooked" for jobs before because of my race...it is truely unfair.
MarleneInMontana: That is one sad story...you would think that after all what our Native Americans have been through, things like that wouldn't happen. My ancestors on my father's side are Native American, so I've always respected their culture and admired their love of life and deep faith. It saddens me to hear that you have had to deal with such racial hatred. But, you do sound strong...standing up to them is what I'd do, too...way to go! More power to you!
I might as well quit posting on here because I've had several comments that were not vulgar, rude, or sensitive not get posted.
Kajun, SL & Marlene - one of my paternal great-great's also was Native (Blackfoot, I believe). My dad raised me with an appreciation of our heritage and the injustices done. Helping right these wrongs remains one of the causes that I am most passionate about.
Kajun, I don't know about Chuck Norris, but I hear Jessie Ventura may be throwing his name into the hat...may be the next best thing!!
Jordan, sorry, makin' flippy floppy Tryin to do my best... is all I'll be good, no worries... ;)
MickeyMass: Wow...that's awesome! I've always loved and supported the tribes around South La. and would others - but I'm not that familiar with tribes other than Cherokee and Apache. I need to visit some reservations. That's on my to visit before I die list. After all, in my opinion...they were here first! My Dad use to always say...you know if you dig enough...you'll find that we are all related in one way or another...oh, silly Pop - I sure do miss you!
Although I really have no good reason to be, I have long been fascinated by the trappings and nature of the human condition we call prejudice. The thoughts that this picture seem to evoke from you folks seems to underscore what we all struggle with. We aren't born with prejudice, it is purposfully conditioned into our being and, interestingly, resides in every culture in the world in varying degrees. We aren't born with it, but we sure as heck all have it - like a dormant virus just waiting to attack a weakened immune system. Just look at how we view this picture. When you think about the fact that this man could be our next president what jumps to mind? Evindent in many of the posts so far: we question his heritage, his allegances, his religion. But beyond that - and this is my point - we jump to conclusions based on what little facts we do know. The instinct to pre-judge jumps up and compells us to try to fill in the blanks in order to form a quick opinion. He's African-American, so he must be strong on race issues. He used to be Muslim and didn't look at the flag once so he must not be proud to be an American and secretly harbour sympathies for extremists. Or, he lived with his very-American grandparents for years so we should assume his views on America reflect theirs. I think the world of my parents and will admit they had tremendous influence on me, but I would hope noone would claim to know me by just knowing my parents! If we resist the temptation to pre-judge we end up with a much better formed opinion, and end up being much better people for the effort. Pre-judging is always the easier path, that's why it's so common. "Oh, so you're Republican! Well that must mean..." "Oh, you used to study the Quran. That must mean..." "Oh, your husband got caught with his pants down with an intern. That must mean..." "So your father was from Africa and your mother was from America and you've lived all over the world. That must mean..." The way to finish all these sentences is "...absolutely nothing." I wish we could all feel the prejudice bug about to bite, and beat it down before it has a chance to influence our opinions of another person. When we can all do that - THAT's when we will start to see it disappear. And lastly, PLEASE realize that media in general, especially when you're talking about one article, is NOT a good vehicle by which to form an opion. Most journalists try very hard to filter their opinions out of pieces they write but let's face it, it's really impossible. The facts are ALWAYS shaded to one side or another depending on the background of the writer and you should always absorb this information with the proverbial "grain of salt". Know that a good writer can present the facts in such a way that leave readers with an opinion that is completely implied.
Kudos, OhioBob! I applaud!!!!
I second what SL just said! Well stated, OB! (OB Wan?)
Those people in the crowd do not look like Latte drinkers to me. I just heard on "The View" that Obama supporters prefer Starbucks and olive oil. I think OhioBob is profound and articulate in his statements. That must mean he's a professor from OSU. Just kidding Bob ... unless you really are a professor ... then, Go Buckeyes!
I am always amazed at the ignorance when I read race blogs. A darker shade of black does not make ignorance! My financial worker at my bank is from Africa and could not get any blacker if he tried. He is one of the smartest and kindest men I know! He was not raised in the states with the you be, he be attitude. I never hear race comments unless it is coming from a black person. Whites don't care about the color of your skin! They care about how you act! I have 3 black nephews and I will not tolerate that behavior from them OR their white cousins! Blacks are the ones who keep the racism alive. They teach their children to keep the race issue alive. It's not about color, it's about handouts! As far as Mexicans, I have seen them destroy a whole town. Do they think it was any easier for Germans or French or Asians to learn the language? No, but they all had to so why should it be any different for Mexicans? If it is so bad here, why don't you all go back to your countries and have a wonderful life. I just know you will love the life there! You should appreciate being a citizen of the USA and stop trying to tear it down! If you like to yell Viva La Mexico, then go home! If you want to be an American, then be one and quit whining about everything! Educated people don't whine!
Lattedrinker - you ramblings are that of a racist, a very angry racist it seems.
Sorry, Shining. I am as far from racist as you can get! I have all kinds of friends and I love them all. I am sick of seeing wasted lives however. I think anyone is capable of getting a job even if it is at a fast food restaurant. You can call me what you want but it doesn't change the facts. It is not racist to want better for your town or your country. And it has nothing to do with race. It has to do with lifestyles. I have seen many successful people of every race. And I have seen people who just want a free ride. I have seen it in every race! I am proud to be an American and I am sick of whiners! Minorities have more chances than anyone to get a good education. I do not have to love lazy, people who teach their kids to take from the system for generations. I have seen it in every race. I am just sick of people coming here and trying to change our country! I say again, if you don't like it, go home! Do you think you will get food stamps in your country? I think not. Will you be able to get a free education? I think not! How about a nice home that is subsidized? You know not! So why not shut up already and work to better our country and stop looking for attacks in every comment that is spoken? I am not angry at all. I saw more anger in these comments than I have seen in a lifetime. I am just fed up with whiners.
Shining, After going back over the comments, it is quite easy to see who is prejudiced here. You attack everyone who doesn't agree with you and yet you don't have a logical comment in this whole blog. Obama is a speech maker and was trained to be so. That does not make a President. Actions speak louder than words.
Latte - re-read your first post. It says, essentially, whites are not the problem, black and Mexicans are the problem. "they" teach their children badly, "they" destroy... This does not read like an impartial statemet, rather, it reads like a bigoted statement. Perhaps part of the problem here is perception. It is sometimes hard to understand the depth of a problem if you have not experienced it. Whites were not denied jobs because of skin color, men were not denied jobs because they were planning to start a family and would not be good workers after that, non-immigrants were not denied employment because of their lack of English skills (and trust me, I know many non-immigrants who cannot speak articulately. Yet, all of these injustices HAVE happened and some still do.
Ya know, he has yet to say what he's going to change. He's a lot like Hillary Clinton, except she's more of the shape-shifting fascist. Both support the murder of preborn children, and are going to take their sweet time bringing our troops back. They're also in favor of the No Child Left Behind act (which has done more bad than good, from what I've noticed), so neither will get my vote, ***and only a moron would bring up the race card.*** People say Obama's inexperience will do good for our country - but people bashed Bush for his inexperience! You'd think people would learn, right? I guess not. And it wouldn't surprise me if Obama or Clinton were assassinated if either become president - it's in the cards. P.S. LattedrinkerWA isn't racist, I didn't get that vibe from him - those with differing opinions must be a little too sensitive for your own good. Re-defeat communism! Vote Ron Paul, at least he'll make effort to actually improve this country. :)
How much black makes a man black? If a black person and a white person have a child, why is the child black? If an hispanic person and a white person has a child, why is the child hispanic? What is it that determines what is white? Did all people start out white? Did they all start out brown? How many generations have to go by before a mixed child isn't mixed anymore? For example, ten generations ago there was one black parent and all of the decendents had white partners. Are the latest children still black?
Oh my GOSH we are sooo screwed if this freak gets elected!! People--wake-up! He is a Muslim! He hides it VERY well! I do not care what you blog back--check it out! You are going to be so very sorry if he weasels his way in--God help us all....post what you will, but you will see I am right--I for one do not want a Muslim/Atheist/racist president...
