So much for clean family super bowl half time shows.  Are there fines for inappropriate use of phalic symbols?

It was a man in a shadow playing a guitar! Sounds to me that anyone is looking for anything to view as obscene!

This was the best Half Time show in YEARS!

The first thing I thought when I saw the silouette was that he looked "Devilish". But it was by far the best half time performance ever..

I have always been a big fan of Prince, musical genius in my opinion, but at this particular moment, in all honesty I laughed so hard I almost wet myself. I got to give him props for performing in the rain, most performers would have whined.

Well, you know, if you don't have it, then you feel the need to prove you do.  You can always count on Prince to show poor taste.  Should not have been a surprise to anyone.

Use of phallic symbols?  You've got to be kidding me.  Are you saying they need to ban guitars?  Yeah, you're right, Peter.  That BAND was way out of line for playing a guitar.  
I thought the half time show was the best ever.  The only way to keep someone from being offended is to offend everyone equally.  In the future, how about not have a half time show? All over someone playing a guitar way back in 2007.

For you who may think this was inappropriate come one, your kids watch worse stuff on comercials...This was by far the best halftime show I've seen in years!

I did not see the half time show, so I am looking at this in a "Photographic way". If you didn't know who it was, where it was, would all of you still say the same thing?  It does not look like a guitar.

The shadow was deliberate. I am sure Prince was well aware of this and knew what he was doing.

Dirty is in the mind of the beholder!  Prince rocked the stadium...much better than (ho hum) last year!

I saw Prince back in 1981 w/ the Stones, J. Geils, and George Thorogood. He was met with flying shoes and obscenities and was pretty much booed off the stage.  He  wasn't appreciated then. He's actually a great entertainer and a helluva guitar player.  I guess we just weren't ready for him.  C'mon girls, get your minds out of the gutter.

Regardless of how good the performance was, by looking at the picture on its own, I see phallic, demonic image. There probably was a great picture to be made here, but this one alters the message.

Never really entered my mind, I was enjoying his half-time performance so much. I am sorry that he didn't play "when dove's cry" and "little red corvette". Think the crowd would've absolutely gone berserk after hearing that. How could the 2nd half of a football game top that!!

I love Prince too, but come on now...we were all taken aback as this image and others like it flashed across our TV screens. I was afraid my 8 year-old daughter was going to ask me what it meant (she didn't). I've loved Prince forever and think he's a genius for pulling this off, even if he didn't mean anything by it.  It was all in our minds.  But that's Prince!  

This half-time show was one of the best (and I am not a huge Prince fan)He gets kudos for performing flawlessly in the rain when most would pull the prima dona roll. Cheers to all those who magically made the stage appear and disappear on commercials - do a story on those guys. As for the other comments - it was a clean, family appropriate show. Those who think otherwise are looking for something to be nasty about - in fact, you offend me. So I guess you can't make everyone happy all the time.

Everyone seems to be searching for the next "malfucntion" the next scandal...grow up!  If you don't like it don't watch it...as for obscene, HA!!  Guitarists play with their instrument where it is comfortable, not practical.

With the way the screen was moving and all it looked like flames and like the devil's tail to me.  The show was good up until this part.  I couldn't believe they allowed that.  But Prince did put on a good show in the pouring rain...

If this is just a man playing a guiter what is the reason for the sheet?  The sheet was put there for a purpose, for people to see something more then is really there.  There are worse things on tv but it would be nice to be able to just watch a "family rated show" and not have to wonder if something contriversal will be in it.

People need to get a life and stop worrying about everything they see.  I see a lot worse than this every night on TV and YES you allow your childern to see it on TV, you allow them to dress like little gangsters and tramps and now you have the nerve to say that the BEST DAMN half time show in years is bad and not in good taste....GET A LIFE and get your bible thumping mind out of the gutter.  If your worried about what your kids think that toss your TV out of your house, keep them away for the movies and for sure keep them from hanging out with the drug users and little wanta be gangsters at school.  There was nothing wrong with the performance this year it was the best every and next year keep your TV turned off so you will not be tempted to watch the half time performance.  If Jesus Christ himsself perform some of you would find something wrong with that....GET OVER IT, if you did not want to see it all you had to do was TURN IT OFF!!!!

People please I love football but when you get right down to it is a competition of men beating each other up. It is rough and occasionally bloody. You are all okay with your children seeing that. Quite frankly I don't see why we are expecting family frindly entertainment at a sometimes brutal event anyway. With all that aside I loved the picture I think it was meant to evoke strong responses out of people which it did much like the show.

I'm a 43, married, mother of two.  You see what you want to see.....what you, alone, are looking for.  Looking for someting ugly & vulgar....that's what you'll get.  Looking for something out-of-the-ordinary and once-in-a-lifetime photo.....this is it.  I thought it was a wonderful half-time show (the best in year's) and I commend Prince for his performance!  The photo is just that, an interesting photo.....a silouette of a man and his guitar.

people need to calm themselves. i think that since the janet jackson misfunction they are trying to shade the eyes of society from everything and anything. we need to stop worrying about what a few might think is not in good taste (thats by looking so deep into something so little) and turn our focus on the more important things that are wrong with our society, like the genocide happening as we speak. This was the best halftime show in many years!!!  No one exposed him/herself.  Songs were actually sung instead of shouted.  Music was rocking.  And the audience retreated into elementary school.  For shame!!!

GO PRINCE... We have more serious things to worry about. We let kids watch Rambo, Terminator and other violent films. They carry guns and knives to school.. We need to think before we critisize everything we see. Best half-time show ever.. PURPLE REIGN.

There is almost always something in any picture that one will see in ones life that will have the arrangement of objects, shadows, forms, etc make for an interesting conversation. Even my very loving, conservative husband enjoyed the show.  When taken out of context, ANYTHING, can seem obscene!  I've never been a big Prince fan but after this show, I would pay to see him on tour.  Loved it! and was not embarrassed to watch with my husband and 19 year old son!

I love Prince just as much as the next guy, but when my 7 year old daughter is subjected to material like this, I think it's a shame.  Yes, it was the best half time show in years and it would have been even better had he not pulled the stunt.  

If you're looking at the picture from a photographic point of view it's a great picture. True, there is definitly sexual conotation in this picture. None the less, it is prince.

I love this years half time show.  Prince was great, the only thing that bother me was his do-rag.  When he finally threw it off, I yelled and screamed for more.....  

I fail to appreciate the connection between Prince, an effiminate androgyne in Little Richard makeup, and the Superbowl, one of the largest, most enthusiastic exhibitions of machismo in the world today.

Prince is awesomely talented and controversial, but we already knew that before watching.  I only watch the half-time show, never the game. I can say this was the best half-time show I've seen.  I've always been a Prince fan, and couldn't wait to watch.  The guitar may look devilish, but obscene?  COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!  

I didn't watch the football game, so this is the first time I saw this and as soon as I glanced I thought of the devil... great photo though.

To those parents who worried about there childern reacting to the imagine or asking about it, what made them react? The only reason they would react to it was if there parent found it obscene and reacted to it. In that case, its the parents who are at fault for presenting the image as obscene, not Prince. To find something obscene, one has to have an obscene thought process first. I enjoyed the show. Grow up people.

It seems silly to me, to make an issue over something like this, when it was sandwiched between two halves of a game that simulates war. Am I the only one confused by this?

Prince has really cleaned up his act alot ,when i saw him in 1997 it was not like any thing i had ever seen before. But I will say he was really great and toned down alot.. I guess i dont see what others see..i just see a man up there with a musical instrument..

I find it rather funny that there are people out there that would consider this offensive. It's sad in this day and age that people will take this completely harmless image and skewer it into something prophane.  All of this "phallic" symbolism and devil-like guitar talk is rediculous.  And of course and 8 year old child isn't going to question the symbolism of this, it's the last thing on their minds; what are you so worried about?  Have you ever heard of progress?

His show was great!!!  I enjoyed his take on Jimi Hendrix and Foo Fighters material.  The guitar work was some of the best live guitar I've heard in years.

Ahhhhhh...people this is Prince...love him or hate him, he always added the "shock" factor to his performances..........For those of us who cried through Purple Rain the movie and partied like it was 1999 this is just another great show by the man....For those of you who never understood his question "am I gay or am I straight"  you probably hated his performance...it's all in the perception.....Yet like a train wreck...you just had to look!  Don't you think that all of this "chatter" about his show is just what he wanted?

You know what I find absolutely hysterical? The fact that you have people whining about how "obscene" it was. Give me a break. They used to crucify Elvis for dancing and shaking his pelvis on stage and call him "obscene". Now you can watch the Disney channel or America's Funniest Home Videos, and see children dancing more seductively than Elvis did. Morality always changes to suit the time period that it's based in. give me a break...this was a quick snapshot...he was moving with his music and his guitar.  I thought it was beautiful.  My friend had a hard time figuring out the whole scene - she saw a tree!!  It was all how an individual sees it.  Prince was awesome..and in case you didn't know - he doesn't play any of dirty songs anymore b/c he is born again.  Poo on all you looking for something to whine about.

Although I'm sure that such images are used by groups such as Al Queda/Islamic extremists ("see how the West corrupts our children!"),  well that and the CIA. Don't have a cow! Most of the time, photographs are used to preserve memories. Other times, it is used to provoke thought and make people think. To open eyes and capture a moment in time. It is troubling when a conservative Christian finds this image to be obscene and yet allows their same children to see the GoDaddy.com commercials (which I have NO problem with) that have been airing in every Super Bowl the last few years. What has happened people? You parents let your children watch the news of people being blown up and commercials about robberies with semi horrible language. Yet, you freak out when a musical performance has a picture like this. Your children laughed, you know you wanted to laugh, liven up and relax. Very interesting on how everyone perceives this performance.  You have a wonderful performer who has always been provocative, an original artist from the word "artist".  Why would you think it would be plain as if Barbara Steisand was performing.  We all know how conservative she is with her history.  If you watched the game, it's a pretty good thought that you have heard of Prince.  His show was once of the best besides Aerosmith and that was a pretty hot show.  Remember who is female guest was and she thought she could sing rock n roll.  It's like coca cola, baseball and apple pie.   Budweiser, football and rock n roll.  Always has been and always will be.  Are you ready for some football? Amazing!  I see neither the "phalic" reference of the "obscene" reference in this photo!  I would not necessarily have guessed that it was a quitar, but the WHOLE picture intrigued me.  I did not see the performance, but heard that it was fantastic.  Too much criticism, too few with open minds.

Am I the only one that gets that his shadow combines with the shadow of his guitar to form his symbol? Remember back in the '90's when he wanted people to know him by only his symbol? It was a little weird, but it worked America! I don't love Prince, but I respect his talent, and I get that he understands branding and the American consumer like no other musician. My husband and I immediately recognized the symbol when this image came up, and we had a little nostalgic laugh along with a little admiration that he pulled it off and suprised us all once again. I suppose you could analyze his symbol for hidden satanic meanings, but it's not like it hasn't been out there for 15 years, why start freaking out now?

This halftime show sucked!!! Anyone who was born IN the 1980's has barely any memory of Prince whatsoever. Most of the songs he played were covers anyway. It was awful. Get someone who is actually popular now like John Mayer, Dave Matthews, The Fray, Goo Goo Dolls, etc.

Yes, people, he intended it to appear like he was stroking himself. For those never saw the concert, quit judging and watch the video. Those who did see it but think he's incapable never listened to his music, especially "Little Darling Nikki" and "P###y Control".  Nor have they watched him in concert when his guitar would actually ejaculate at the end of "Let's go Crazy".  I thought the half-time show was pretty sly, actually and I bet he hasn't stopped laughing at all the controversy.

When I first saw the guitar shadow effect, I immediately knew it was intentional.  He has never taken the conventional route and sexuality has always been an integral part of his act.  The people that hired him HAD to know that and were probably hoping for a bit of controversy to give the superbowl halftime show the boost it so desparately needed. Satanic?  I don't see it.  Sexual, of course. No big secret there. Prince is sexy, bold, talented and one heck of a showman.  

People are so uptight now days.  If your child is "getting" this adult innuendo then it is obviously not the first time they have been exposed to it.  Maybe they picked it up from school or maybe from home, who knows?  This performance took a fair amount of imagination to discern some sexual reference.  Don't think adult performances like this are corrupting your children.  Don't think that children can't pick up on your reactions.  When adults overreact to minor adult references like this one they draw their children's attention to the fact that there is something that their parents are in on and they are not.  It must be fairly important for their parents to be making such a big deal about so of course they are going to go to school the next morning and find out what the deal is.  Everything aside, if I recall the halftime show occurred somewhere around 8:30PM Central Time.  Last I checked this is around the times that racier TV shows come on where sexual innuendo is blatant and often the theme of the whole show not just a ten minute segment.

These days it's anything to make a sensational splash!  Shame on all the celebrities that are shamelessly doing all these antics!  Our teenagers are being enticed to consider these ridiculous incidents as NORMAL behavior.

Guitars have been used as phallic symbols since the birth of rock & roll. The phrase "rock & roll" was originally itself a reference to sex. Rock lyrics are frequently overtly sexual. To be shocked that a rock performance (especially Prince) would be accompanied by sexual imagery is just silly.

As being a Prince fan for too long, I could care less about the darn sheet!  The music was an awesome blend intended to span time...if you're looking for any kind of analogy, try this...Prince has been making his music for years.  The Super Bowl has been on for years.  Do the math and realize that both are just shows to entertain people.  That is all.  No innuendo, no offense, nothing.  Just entertainment.  I watched the game and the half-time.  Loved every minute of it...as entertainment.

We as Americans again show that we are fundamentally puritan, speaking to the sexual aspect of the shadowplay and not saying one word to the extreme violent nature of the game itself of which no one seems to blink letting their children watch. Maybe instead of sex education we should have gun ranges (maybe then kids will really want to go to gym class, eh).

I'm not a Prince fan, but I believe his guitar an image of the symbol he used a few years ago?  When he was formerly known as Price?

Actually, I didn't even notice anything beyond his 'symbol' shaped GUITAR...until the media started all the hoo haw about the phallic image.  Good thing they don't know the meaning of the lyrics behind "Little Red Corvette" then...

See what you want in the photo...that's what pictures and art do.  Dislike the music if it's not the type of music you like - however the halftime show was excellent,and if you've ever seen him in concert you'd know he puts on a helluva show.  I was just mad cause I would have liked to hear more of his bluesy version of "All Along the Watchtower"...and in the rain too?! Nice! To this I say I was teased.  Damn him...damn him!

The people who see obsenity in everything, phallic symbols, suggestions of sex, are people who nobody wants to be with anyway.  That's a great shot and it was a great show.

Golly, Prince?  Doing something shocking and sexual?  Wow.  That's new.

Any of his fans know he can be counted on to entertain and push the envelope at the same time.  I was just bummed that it was so rainy that he couldn't dance.

I don't think it was Prince's intention to be obscene. This was just a fluke of guitar playing.  ANY guitar being played behind this screen, by any guitarist would have "looked" phalic. People only made a big deal because it was Prince. Regardless, it was, handsdown, the best 1/2 time performance EVER.

Has anyone heard anything about Prince's recent religious conversion?
