Judging from the length of the star trails it is probably a 1 to 5 minute exposure. Not very long for an astrophoto. I agree this is the most striking comet photo I have ever seen.

The time it takes to produce a star streak of this length is from 5-10 minutes depending on the time of night the shot was taken and the angle at wich te camera was pointing at the sky. It's a fantastic shot.
What wonderful images nature provides us...if we'd only take the time to stop and look more often.
This is a somthing that I would consider beautiful.
the only thing i can say is "WOW" what a killer picture of a comet...
One of the most amazing pictures that I have seen of this comet, this is the kind of picture that is usually my desk top.
Wow is right! This is an ideal astrophoto, fantastic display of the tail's curve from solar wind.
Was anyone killed when that thing landed?
I love stargazing and this is the most beautiful photo of the sky tha I've ever seen.
hoooooooooo chile
Any idea about the ISO here? For as long as the exposure was, the noise isn't out of control.
can we saying, AMAZING!!!
That is a wonderful picture and a reminder of the beauty that God has placed all around us.
Not a Star War but a Star Peace!
Absolute beauty from the heavens above!!
Really beautiful. It's nice that the long exposure didn't cause the city lights to be so bright that they detracted visually from the comet. As it is, they're a nice accent but not the overwhelming glow that you sometimes get with a long exposure of artificial light.
Why is it, true beauty is always fond with natural deaster.
since the comet got no closer than 75 million miles from earth, i think its safe to say no one got hurt.
Spectacular-I love the colors! It is an amazing photo of this one~
This picture makes me speechless! It also reminds me of how our Creator is absolutely AMAZING!
I consider David Lillo lucky to have gotten such a shot! :)
That was a beautiful shot of GOD firework display that he shows us and the other worlds to show his majestic power and glory.
The sky is falling, the sky is falling....
Wow, 10 minutes of time frozen into one shot. Lovely
good job on taking the picture at the right time, place and weather.
This also belongs in a gallary.
WOW THE BEST ONE OF THE COMMET IVE SEEN
Beautiful!!
Sandi - Please do some research on comets or maybe read the newspaper every once and a while. Beautiful picture.
AHHHHH, the first thing i could think of. but a PHENOMINAL picture!!!
Neat
Seeing this picture says that there is a higher power. Anyone doubting this just has to look at it right. No man could create this beauty, just capture it on film. Keep the faith
Were Dead!!!
I could creat that. I could even make it better. I love photoshop. It's a neat photograph, but not of god or angels just an enormous ice cube. Possible carrying with it the building blocks of a new evolution of life.
this is so breathtaking. it's simply beautiful.
Hi. From NASA's site - this was 4 minute exposure, iso 400 - the interesting thing about this particular shot.. it did actually capture what was seen with the naked eye. Unfortunately, it could only ne seen like this from the southern hemisphere of the Earth. Here in the states, I actually saw the comet one morning a week earlier, that was before it swung past the sun. When I could see it, it appeared just before sunrise, only 2 magnitude brighter more than Venus. It was very very very small at the time. It was a big surprise when it brightened up the way it did after it swung past the sun. This particular day, the tail was so large in the southern hemisphere, you could actually see hints of the tail in the sky in Colorado at dusk. Space weather said that it was the brightest comet in 75 years. (some photos of that also on the spaceweather.com site). I agree, this is an absolutely spectactular photo of a celestial event. Cheers, Howie.
(I know I'll get some slack from my comment, so remember, it's only a joke!) Sandi, are you a blonde? LOL And yes it is a beautiful picture. Wish I'd seen the real thing! Wow!
Looks like astral drifting!
At last, a picture worth viewing!
no five min exposure, it is the brightest comet ever seen or recorded that was its tail.
makes you wonder whats coming next.
Beautiful, this is the second picture on this blog that was worth staring at longer than a second
At first glance, this reminds me of the Northern Lights. It really is a breathtaking photo.
This the most amazing picture I have ever seen........
Cool. Looks like there's a hole in the sky; better yet, like the sky's on fire in one place.
" I wanted to light that one"!
great shot ! slightly too long exposure and you can see the noise, but then, it allows you to see the full size of the comet's tail. I say congratulations ! thanks for sharing.
