Rocky, Maine's largest lobster ever, has claws "tough enough to snap a man's arm"

Reuters: "All the weight is in the claws, it would break your arm," said Elaine Jones, education director for the state's Department of Marine Resources.

Maine State Aquarium Manager Aimee Hayden-Roderiques is pictured holding "Rocky", the 27-lb lobster donated by a shrimp dragger to the Aquarium in this handout photo obtained by Reuters February 23, 2012. The lobster, the largest ever recorded caught in Maine, was released into the ocean Thursday.

The 40-inch male crustacean, about the size of a 3-year-old human, was freed in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Yikes, how did they handle it the first time they caught it? How did they put those rubber bands around its claws without getting hurt??

        Reply#2 - Thu Feb 23, 2012 5:45 PM EST

        Very carefully.

Saw them doing that on Dirty Jobs. They have a tool that holds the rubber band open so they can slip it over the claws and release it without getting their hands near the claws.

The men can do it fast. Clip, clip, done, grab next lobster. The grabbing has to be done right too, so they can't reach the hand holding them.

They are very careful. I have seen big lobsters, but that one was huge. Probably would not have tasted very good though, the big ones can be tough and rubbery. An average lobster can take a person's finger off, so I have no doubt this one could take off a man's arm. They have one claw designed for crushing and the other for cutting. The one made for crushing can turn bone into powder.

Aw, ya beat me to it on the melted butter! In all seriousness though, it's great that they released this behemoth because it's the big mature ones which reproduce the most.

That is big, I wonder when they started keeping track of the record size lobsters. I read about the settlers catching giant lobsters in the 1600's

The big boys, like this guy, can be tough to eat, no matter how carefully you steam 'em.... I'll take a 2 pounder...:)

Absolutley, it's a cool monsterous lobster, but would taste horrible, way too tough. I've eaten a 3 pounder once and that's it, because really a 2 pounder is way better. I would have like to have seen the guys who caught it, I bet their eyes were as big as this lobster.

Agree. That big guy would be as tough as an old boot. Far better to let him go and make more delicious (with clarified butter) little lobsters.

Personally I like Caribbean lobster better.

And Yes, this guy would be tough, but my mouth still waters at the thought.

Very likely this would not be good to eat anyway. If they get that huge, they deserve to live - glad to see it was released.

Are you gonna cry to PETA?

Do you defend rats, pigeons, cockroaches?

Seeing as how lobsters are the nautical equivalent of all our nasties on land, I wouldn't be too upset about it.
