Tuesday, photographer Annie Leibovitz led a tour through her latest collection of photographs she says renewed her inspiration. It's a road trip through U.S. history and it spawned from an idea grown out of a book she had wanted to make with her partner, Susan Sontag.

After Sontag died, she eventually revived the idea with her young children who accompanied her across the country to destinations like Niagara Falls, Elvis Presley's home, the Yosemite Valley and Walden Pond. Many of the pictures focus on the remaining traces of photographers and artists she admires, such as Julia Margaret Cameron, Ansel Adams, and Robert Smithson.

The exhibit titled "Annie Leibovitz: Pilgrimage" can be seen at the Smithsonian's American Art Museum in Washington D.C. from Jan. 20 – May 20. A book of the work is also available. After the presentation at the Smithsonian, "Pilgrimage" will tour nationally.
