Two South Korean passengers are rescued from the Costa Concordia, Jan. 15.

 AP reports:

The two survivors of a cruise ship grounding who were found nearly a day after the ship rolled onto its side have been identinfied as a South Korean couple on their honeymoon.

Prato fire commander Vincenzo Bennardo told The Associated Press that rescuers who had been banging on doors of the ship cabins all night finally heard a reply from one of the rooms early Sunday. He said the two, about 29 years old, were in good condition. He said the rescuers never stopped going door-to-door during the night in the non-submerged part of the ship.

Unfortunately, most of these ships are built more for pleasure cruising than for seaworthiness. That being said, and given all the new high-tech navigational aids, there is absolutely NO excuse for a captain losing his ship to grounding. He will be lucky if they don't hang him.

Absolutely no excuse for this accident. It is very surreal.

HELLO, In 2012, how is it ever possible, to be this far off corse, with onboard computers, that have back up computers, for back up computers.Where was the captain,or the first officer. Or Coast Gaurd warnings for a ship that large, with 4 Thousand People on board. I hope the "Captain" never gets out of jail, and all the deck hands that abandon thier post. The Board Members should have jail time also, for not having a competent crew, and ship systems, to handle this type of Emergency. It's all about the MONEY...!RIGHT

My Hat Goes Off to all the Crew Members who stayed, to help all thoughs Lost Souls Onboard...!Job Well Done !

I think its a bit odd that they stayed in the cabin of a sinking ship. Were they somehow trapped?

They were assured by the crew - and probably not in their native language -- that everything was ok and go back to their cabin.

It's going to take a long time to sort out what really happened but this was not the Titanic going down in thousands of feet of open ocean. The captain may have assumed that all passengers were off the ship. Maybe the tides were misjudged. Maybe under water conditions had changed. In any event this is all speculation so let's keep the Internet lynch mob under control and be glad that almost all passengers and crew are safe. If there is any fault it will come out eventually. After all the ship owners have a 650 million dollar investment half submerged in the Mediterranean.

He doesn't deserve the title of "captain".

Everyone knows that it is women and children first and the captain last. Shame on him.

The honeymoon couple stayed on board, 'cause they heard there was an open buffet. No one attended, but them..There was an upside down cake they ordered....

Just curious - aren't these two facts- luxury liner and 4000 aboard a contradiction? I would be scared to live with so many people on a floating steel box. This would make sense, if it were a Noah’s arc with a bunch of desperados on it. But that’s how they build them to make a big buck. Otherwise, the blame should be spread to all alert and responsible personnel, who allowed the ship to stray from a routine route.

I have taken a trip on an Italian ship ( a few hundred passengers) in the past and have good memories. The crew was very friendly and the food was great.

I have heard that the captain overrode the computers to take the ship in close to begin with, and then lost no time abandoning the ship. He even refused Coast guard orders to get back aboard and find out how many needed rescuing and produce other info they wanted. They should throw the book at him, if all this is so.

Coast guard should have had multiple diving crews all over that wreck, 24/7. About the captain not telling them where to look and for how many. The fact is, they can't assume that - they have to look everywhere. People trapped in air pockets don't have air tanks to swim out with. That is what they should have assembled multiple non stop crews for. Incompetent captain, incompetent rescue.

well they should have thrown the captain out of the rescue boatbut give him a half deflated life vest. don't make it too easy on him--u people agree?

Sure, he saved all those lives by his heroic actions. BUT his stupidity and hotdoging attitude, over riding the computers that were pre programed with a safe route just to show off cost him the ship + many lives of people on board. That is like an airline pilot diverting to do aerobatics over his neighborhood. Hand the bastard.
