Sorry Bill in Houston, you would be wrong. I've been in Thailand many times. My first time there was a scheduled show in the dinning room billed as traditional dancers from Asian countries. I enjoyed it very much and it wasn't until after the show was over that my host and hostess informed me that most of the "lady" dancers were men. I couldn't tell the difference.

In Thailand they are called kathoey and are part of the culture. Being a Buddhist country, they naturally follow the teachings of tolerance, unlike "christians" in the US.

Being Tansgendered my self I have come across quite of bit of bigotry and ignorance. I have a lady friend who has a seven year old daughter. When she first met me she was a bit confused as most children are when the encounter something for the first time. Her Mother explained to her in a calm and sensible way that not all people fall into a strict male/female category. Some are somewhere in between. "OK" she said, "I'm cool with that." That is how most children would react. It is only from their parents that they get the bigotry and ignorance.

Have you ever actually met and had a conversation with a transgendered person? It isn't just surgery, they get hormone therapy as well, and unless they are told ahead of time, people usually can't tell one way or the other. In the case of male to female transgender, you really can't tell even before the surgery if they have been taking hormones. They already possess what most people consider 'feminine' characteristics because they are mentally and emotionally female, just born in the wrong body.

And the intolerance is relatively new; of course in the beginnings of civilizations there was no surgery, but there were still transgendered people. They were considered both sexes blended in one body, and most people believed this gave them unique powers. Many of them became powerful and highly respected shamans. There are many advantages we now have over early civilizations but there are many losses too... we could all take lessons in tolerance from them.

Also, not uncommon to just see dead people bloated and lying in the street or alleys. There was a song once that said, "One night in Bangkok will make a hard man humble." Hell, they got that right!

Have YOU ever been to Bangkok? I have lived there for 15 years. Your criticism of the city is just false and exaggerated. Drugs are very hard to come by, because it's capital punishment for dealing drugs, and no, there are no dead people on the streets. With all that hospitals in Bangkok, ambulances are quite efficient. I admit that, like all big cities, there are some sketchy areas, but if you are with good intentions, you should never be there in the first place.

Where I grew up they were called Ma'hu. Had several in my high school, and some went on to become fully transgendered. Most found work in the red light district of Hotel Street at a club called "the Glades", a female impersonators bar. I am a Christian and believe in "the miracle" of birth - but - when one considers the immeasurable division and building that takes place in the formation of our physical bodies, why is it not possible for some to believe that "mixed messages" might occur? People are people. I don't agree with the idea of a "third sex" - rather I see this as an imbalance that is corrected or compensated for to more fully "fit" the sense of self.

You have come closer to the truth than I think you probably know. There are numerous of cases of people whose gender is the opposite of their genes. XY females and XX males. It occurs at the rate of about 1 in 20-25k men (people with a penis). That is about 1/4 of a million XX men wondering around.
