With only five feet of free space Finnish-built cruise ship MS Allure of the Seas passes under the Store Belt Bridge at low tide on Oct. 30. The bridge connects the Danish islands of Fuenen and Zealand. The vessel is set for its home port in Florida, US, and like its sister ship, the Allure of the Seas is 360 metres long, and can carry 5,400 passengers. The 16-deck vessel has dozens of cafes and restaurants. There are seven theme areas, including a central park, boardwalk, royal promenade, and a pool and sports zone.

One big wave at the wrong moment could have ruined everyones day.

Yep these huge ships are like corks bobbing up and down on each wave. And the guy driving it doesn't even know. Sad, truly sad what some people just don't think of.

These monster cruise ships are a disaster waiting to happen. The reason is in their design. There's no freeboard, no deck surrounding the superstructure where it meets the edge of the hull known as the "tumblehome". As a result, the ship is topheavy. A heavy sea or a rouge wave in mid-ocean might lead to a capsizing, with the loss of many hundreds of lives in a matter of moments. A real-life "Poseidon Adventrue" is closer than we might imagine!

Gee look at that, random internet surfer knows more about giant cruise ship design than the hundreds of engineers that design and build them. Hurry, get to Zealand and let them know! They might not be reading your brilliant warning here.

I've seen this happen time and time again on these news stories. Someone that just happens to read the story can spot something that everyone else has overlooked. I think the engineers of such projects should just submit technical drawings of their projects to the world in general over the internet. Odds are that if people have the ability to spot such errors they would also be adept at reading and understanding these drawings and be able to alert everyone before such a disaster makes it off the drawing board. Tumblehome, who knew?

Oh darn. Anyone know how to unstick a sarcasm button?

Well engineered ships sink every year.

What was the name of that extremely well engineered ship that sunk in 1914? I think there was a movie about it. A cheezy song too.

That would have been 1912. watchman It was April 14

Why would anyone want to go on a vacation when there are 8300 other people around to bother you and no where to get away from them? Just what would I be on vacation from with that many people around? The thought of it is enough to make me swear off vacations, if I ever were to get one.
